    A self-synthesized origin for heavy metals in hot subdwarf stars

    Context. A number of He-rich hot subdwarf stars present high abundances for trans-iron elements, such as Sr, Y, Zr, and Pb. Diffusion processes are important in hot subdwarf stars and it is generally believed that the high abundances of heavy elements in these peculiar stars are due to the action of radiative levitation. However, during the formation of He-rich hot subdwarf stars, hydrogen can be ingested into the convective zone driven by the He-core flash. It is known that episodes of protons being ingested into He-burning convective zones can lead to neutron-capture processes and the formation of heavy elements.Aims. In this work, we aim to explore, for the first time, whether neutron-capture processes can occur in late He-core flashes taking place in the cores of the progenitors of He-rich hot subdwarfs. We aim to explore the possibility of a self-synthesized origin for the heavy elements observed in some He-rich hot subdwarf stars.Methods. We computed a detailed evolutionary model for a stripped red-giant star using a stellar evolution code with a nuclear network comprising 32 isotopes. Then we post-processed the stellar models in the phase of helium and hydrogen burning using a post-processing nucleosynthesis code with a nuclear network of 1190 species, which allowed us to follow the neutron-capture processes in detail.Results. We find the occurrence of neutron-capture processes in our model, with neutron densities reaching a value of ∼5 × 1012 cm−3. We determined that the trans-iron elements are enhanced in the surface by 1 to 2 dex, as compared to initial compositions. Moreover, the relative abundance pattern [Xi/Fe] produced by neutron-capture processes closely resembles those observed in some He-rich hot subdwarf stars, hinting at a possible self-synthesized origin for the heavy elements in these stars.Conclusions. We conclude that intermediate neutron-capture processes can occur during a proton ingestion event in the He-core flash of stripped red-giant stars. This mechanism offers a natural channel for the production of the heavy elements observed in certain He-rich hot subdwarf stars

    Dijet production as a centrality trigger for p-p collisions at CERN LHC

    We demonstrate that a trigger on hard dijet production at small rapidities allows to establish a quantitative distinction between central and peripheral collisions in pbar-p and p-p collisions at Tevatron and LHC energies. Such a trigger strongly reduces the effective impact parameters as compared to minimum bias events. This happens because the transverse spatial distribution of hard partons (x >~ 10^{-2}) in the proton is considerably narrower than that of soft partons, whose collisions dominate the total cross section. In the central collisions selected by the trigger, most of the partons with x >~ 10^{-2} interact with a gluon field whose strength rapidly increases with energy. At LHC (and to some extent already at Tevatron) energies the strength of this interaction approaches the unitarity ('black-body') limit. This leads to specific modifications of the final state, such as a higher probability of multijet events at small rapidities, a strong increase of the transverse momenta and depletion of the longitudinal momenta at large rapidities, and the appearance of long-range correlations in rapidity between the forward/backward fragmentation regions. The same pattern is expected for events with production of new heavy particles (Higgs, SUSY). Studies of these phenomena would be feasible with the CMS-TOTEM detector setup, and would have considerable impact on the exploration of the physics of strong gluon fields in QCD, as well as the search for new particles at LHC.Comment: 17 pages, Revtex 4, 14 EPS figures.     Quasiclassical magnetotransport in a random array of antidots

    We study theoretically the magnetoresistance ρxx(B)\rho_{xx}(B) of a two-dimensional electron gas scattered by a random ensemble of impenetrable discs in the presence of a long-range correlated random potential. We believe that this model describes a high-mobility semiconductor heterostructure with a random array of antidots. We show that the interplay of scattering by the two types of disorder generates new behavior of ρxx(B)\rho_{xx}(B) which is absent for only one kind of disorder. We demonstrate that even a weak long-range disorder becomes important with increasing BB. In particular, although ρxx(B)\rho_{xx}(B) vanishes in the limit of large BB when only one type of disorder is present, we show that it keeps growing with increasing BB in the antidot array in the presence of smooth disorder. The reversal of the behavior of ρxx(B)\rho_{xx}(B) is due to a mutual destruction of the quasiclassical localization induced by a strong magnetic field: specifically, the adiabatic localization in the long-range Gaussian disorder is washed out by the scattering on hard discs, whereas the adiabatic drift and related percolation of cyclotron orbits destroys the localization in the dilute system of hard discs. For intermediate magnetic fields in a dilute antidot array, we show the existence of a strong negative magnetoresistance, which leads to a nonmonotonic dependence of ρxx(B)\rho_{xx}(B).Comment: 21 pages, 13 figure

    A Syngeneic Orthotopic Murine Model of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma in the C57/BL6 Mouse Using the Panc02 and 6606PDA Cell Lines

    Background/Aims: To develop a clinically relevant immunocompetent murine model to study pancreatic cancer using two different syngeneic pancreatic cancer cell lines and to assess MRI for its applicability in this model. Methods: Two cell lines, 6606PDA and Panc02, were employed for the experiments. Cell proliferation and migration were monitored in vitro. Matrigel™ was tested for its role in tumor induction. Tumor cell growth was assessed after orthotopic injection of tumor cells into the pancreatic head of C57/BL6 mice by MRI and histology. Results: Proliferation and migration of Panc02 were significantly faster than those of 6606PDA. Matrigel did not affect tumor growth/migration but prevented tumor cell spread after injection thus avoiding undesired peritoneal tumor growth. MRI could reliably monitor longitudinal tumor growth in both cell lines: Panc02 had a more irregular finger-like growth, and 6606PDA grew more spherically. Both tumors showed local invasiveness. Histologically, Panc02 showed a sarcoma-like undifferentiated growth pattern, whereas 6606PDA displayed a moderately differentiated glandular tumor growth. Panc02 mice had a significantly shorter (28 days) survival than 6606PDA mice (50 days). Conclusion: This model closely mimics human pancreatic cancer. MRI was invaluable for longitudinal monitoring of tumor growth thus reducing the number of mice required. Employing two different cell lines, this model can be used for various treatment and imaging studies

    A novel CCM2 variant in a family with non-progressive cognitive complaints and cerebral microbleeds

    Lobar cerebral microbleeds are most often sporadic and associated with Alzheimer's disease. The aim of our study was to identify the underlying genetic defect in a family with cognitive complaints and multiple lobar microbleeds and a positive family history for early onset Alzheimer's disease. We performed exome sequencing followed by Sanger sequencing for validation purposes on genomic DNA of three siblings with cognitive complaints, reduced amyloid-beta-42 in CSF and multiple cerebral lobar microbleeds. We checked for the occurrence of the variant in a cohort of 363 patients with early onset dementia and/or microbleeds. A novel frameshift variant (c.236_237delAC) generating a premature stop codon in the CCM2 gene shared by all three siblings was identified. Pathogenicity of the variant was supported by the presence of cerebral cavernous malformations in two of the siblings and by the absence of the variant exome variant databases. Two siblings were homozygous for APOE-ε4; one heterozygous. The cognitive complaints, reduced amyloid-beta-42 in CSF and microbleeds suggest preclinical Alzheimer's disease, but the stability of the cognitive complaints does not. We hypothesize that the phenotype in this family may be due to a combination of the CCM2 variant and the APOE status

    Enhancement of Magneto-Optic Effects via Large Atomic Coherence

    We utilize the generation of large atomic coherence to enhance the resonant nonlinear magneto-optic effect by several orders of magnitude, thereby eliminating power broadening and improving the fundamental signal-to-noise ratio. A proof-of-principle experiment is carried out in a dense vapor of Rb atoms. Detailed numerical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results. Applications such as optical magnetometry or the search for violations of parity and time reversal symmetry are feasible

    Multi-gap superconductivity in a BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 film from optical measurements at terahertz frequencies

    We measured the THz reflectance properties of a high quality epitaxial thin film of the Fe-based superconductor BaFe1.84_{1.84}Co0.16_{0.16}As2_2 with Tc_c=22.5 K. The film was grown by pulsed laser deposition on a DyScO3_3 substrate with an epitaxial SrTiO3_3 intermediate layer. The measured RS/RNR_S/R_N spectrum, i.e. the reflectivity ratio between the superconducting and normal state reflectance, provides clear evidence of a superconducting gap ΔA\Delta_A close to 15 cm1^{-1}. A detailed data analysis shows that a two-band, two-gap model is absolutely necessary to obtain a good description of the measured RS/RNR_S/R_N spectrum. The low-energy ΔA\Delta_A gap results to be well determined (ΔA\Delta_A=15.5±\pm0.5 cm1^{-1}), while the value of the high-energy gap ΔB\Delta_B is more uncertain (ΔB\Delta_B=55±\pm7 cm1^{-1}). Our results provide evidence of a nodeless isotropic double-gap scenario, with the presence of two optical gaps corresponding to 2Δ/kTc\Delta/kT_c values close to 2 and 7.Comment: Published Versio

    ASPECTOS ETIOLÓGICOS E EPIDEMIOLÓGICOS DO ABORTO EQÜINO

    Para a investigação das causas de aborto eqüino na região de Curitiba, realizou-se a coleta e processamento do material de casos de aborto para bacteriologia, virologia e histologia; e um levantamento estatístico geral dos casos de aborto. Durante três anos, foram acompanhadas 674 gestações, das quais 9,2% resultaram em aborto. Com relação a abortos gemelares, verificou-se um índice de 4,5% em um total de 132 casos analisados. O material de 21 fetos foi processado com o intuito de isolar-se o Herpesvírus eqüino tipo 1, obtendo-se o isolamento em 4 casos (19,0%). Foram examinados para bacteriologia um total de 38 fetos, dos quais 44,7% foram considerados bacteriologicamente positivos. As bactérias isoladas com maior freqüência foram: Streptococcus spp., Klebsiella spp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp. e Staphylococcus spp.. Foram descritas as alterações encontradas no exame histológico da maioria dos casos de aborto de origem bacteriana e viral. Abstract This research was undertaken with the aim of establishing the main causes of equine abortion in the Curitiba area. It has been established that during the period of three years occurred a total of 9.2 per cent abortions among 674 gestations studied. From 50 aborted fetuses, different biological material was collected for bacteriology, virus and histopathology analysis. A total of 4.5 per cent of twin abortions were observed among 132 cases of abortions studied. The equine Herpesvirus type 1 has been successfully isolated from 4 cases, among 21 fetuses studied. On the other hand, 44.7 per cent from 38 fetuses studied were considered positive for bacteriological testing. The most frequent bacteria recovered were Streptococcus spp., Klebsiella spp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas spp. and Staphylococcus spp. The alterations found in the histological examination of the majority of bacteriological and virological abortion cases were desccribed
