Probing the strange nature of the nucleon with phi photoproduction
The presence inside the nucleon of a significant component of strange-antistrange quark pairs has been invoked to explain a number of current puzzles in the low energy realm of QCD. The {sigma} term in {pi}N scattering is a venerable conundrum which can be explained with a 10%--20% admixture. The spin crisis brought on by the EMC result and follow on experiments was first interpreted as requiring a large strange content of s quarks whose spin helped cancel the contribution of the u and d quarks to the nucleon spin, again of order 10%. Excess phi meson production in p{anti p} annihilation at LEAR has also been explained in terms of up to a 19% admixture of s{anti s} pairs. Charm production in deep-inelastic neutrino scattering would appear to provide evidence for a 3% strange sea. It is clear that a definite probe of the strange quark content would be an invaluable tool in unraveling a number of mysteries. The longitudinal beam target asymmetry in {psi} photoproduction is a particularly sensitive probe of that content. It is explored here
Monitoring biotransformations in polyamide fibres
The enzymatic hydrolysis of polyamide fibres yields amino and carboxylic groups. These groups can be found in solution treatments as polyamide monomers and soluble oligomers. The amino groups can also be found at the surface of the fibres as end group chains. In this paper we report two methods to quantify the formation of these groups as a result of the enzymatic action. Soluble amino groups can be quantified with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS), which yields a coloured complex which can be determined spectrophotometrically. The amino groups on the fibre surface can be quantified by reaction with a wool reactive dye and determination of colour intensities after a dyeing procedure below the glass transition temperature of polyamide
Decay of the first isobaric analog state in Ge69
The alpha-decay branching ratio for the lowest isobaric analog state in Ge69 has been measured to be less than 1.0×10-2. Transitions to this level contribute significantly to the cross section for the capture of high-energy neutrinos by Ga69. Since the analog state decays almost exclusively by gamma-ray emission, induced Ge69 radioactivity may be used for the detection of high-energy neutrinos in large-scale gallium neutrino detectors
Gamma decays of isobaric analog states relevant to neutrino detection
Measurements have been made of the gamma ray branching ratios for the decay of the lowest isobaric analog states of Ge71 and Kr81. These states could be populated by high-energy neutrinos in gallium- and bromine-based detectors. Although these states are unbound to particle decay, all channels with significant penetrabilities are isospin forbidden, so that gamma decay is a possibility. Our results indicate that these states decay mainly by neutron emission and therefore contribute very little to detection sensitivities for Ga71 and Br81
I127(3He,t)127Xe reaction with relevance to neutrino detection
The I127(3He,t)127Xe reaction has been measured for low-lying states in Xe127 which may play a role in neutrino capture by I127. High-spin states at excitation energies Ex=309 and 646 keV are found to be much more strongly populated than the Jπ=((3/2-(7/2)+ states relevant to neutrino capture by I127
Biochemical parameters of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) after transport with eugenol or essential oil of Lippia alba added to the water
The transport of live fish is a routine practice in aquaculture and constitutes a considerable source of stress to the animals. The addition of anesthetic to the water used for fish transport can prevent or mitigate the deleterious effects of transport stress. This study investigated the effects of the addition of eugenol (EUG) (1.5 or 3.0 mu L L-1) and essential oil of Lippia alba (EOL) (10 or 20 mu L L-1) on metabolic parameters (glycogen, lactate and total protein levels) in liver and muscle, acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) in muscle and brain, and the levels of protein carbonyl (PC), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and nonprotein thiol groups (NPSH) and activity of glutathione-S-transferase in the liver of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen; Quoy and Gaimard, 1824) transported for four hours in plastic bags (loading density of 169.2 g L-1). The addition of various concentrations of EUG (1.5 or 3.0 mu L L-1) and EOL (10 or 20 mu L L-1) to the transport water is advisable for the transportation of silver catfish, since both concentrations of these substances increased the levels of NPSH antioxidant and decreased the TBARS levels in the liver. In addition, the lower liver levels of glycogen and lactate in these groups and lower AChE activity in the brain (EOL 10 or 20 mu L L-1) compared to the control group indicate that the energetic metabolism and neurotransmission were lower after administration of anesthetics, contributing to the maintenance of homeostasis and sedation status.Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul (FAPERGS/PRONEX) [10/0016-8]; Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Cientifico (CNPq) [470964/2009-0]; Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES); CNPqinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
New enzymes with potential for PET surface modification
This work describes newly isolated organisms and their potential to modify the surface of polyethylene terephthalate
(PET). Out of the different screening processes, four bacterial and five fungal strains were isolated. A PET model substrate was synthesized (bis (benzoyloxyethyl) terephthalate) and used in the screening
process, mimicking the polymer in its crucial properties and having the advantage of defined hydrolysis products. On this model substrate, extracellular enzyme preparations from the isolated microorganisms showed a maximum activity of 8.54 nkat/L. All enzyme preparations showed esterase activity on p-nitrophenyl-acetate while no activity was found on p-nitrophenyl decanoate or p-nitrophenyl palmitate. Increased hydrophilicity of PET fabrics after enzyme treatment was found based on rising height and water dissipation measurements
Selenium uptake and associated anti-oxidant properties in Pleurotus fossulatus cultivated on wheat straw from seleniferous fields
The present study was carried out to examine the antioxidant activity in oyster mushroom cultivated on selenium (Se) rich substrate. Pleurotus fossulatus was cultivated on Se-rich wheat straw collected from the seleniferous belt of Punjab (India) and its potential to accumulate Se from substrate was examined. Using different assay systems the modulations in the anti-oxidant profile of Se enriched mushroom was studied in comparison to the mushrooms cultivated on normal straw. The oyster mushrooms were observed to potentially mobilize Se from Se-rich substrates to fruiting bodies, resulting in significantly high uptake (37.2±0.6 μg g−1) as compared to control (3.57±0.53 mg g−1). The antioxidant activity, as determined by various assays, such as reducing power, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging, and metal chelating activity, was higher in the experimental mushrooms when compared to control. The results obtained demonstrate that Se-fortified mushrooms through cultivation on straw containing organic forms of Se can be considered as natural and effective dietary supplements of organic Se for humans. The present study proposes the use of Se-rich agricultural residues as substrates for mushroom cultivation for human and livestock supplementation
First measurement of direct photoproduction on the proton
We report on the results of the first measurement of exclusive
meson photoproduction on protons for GeV and GeV. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas
Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The resonance was detected via its
decay in the channel by performing a partial wave analysis of the
reaction . Clear evidence of the meson
was found in the interference between and waves at GeV. The -wave differential cross section integrated in the mass range of
the was found to be a factor of 50 smaller than the cross section
for the meson. This is the first time the meson has been
measured in a photoproduction experiment
