    Degermed corn distiller’s grains with solubles (DGS) have feed value similar to traditional distiller’s grains

    Rapid expansion of the fuel ethanol industry has greatly increased availability of distillery byproducts. Distiller\u27s grains with solubles (DGS) are the predominant byproduct of fermenting grains into fuel ethanol. During this process, starch is removed from the grain and the residual components of the grain are concentrated in the DGS. Improvements in the conversion of cereal grains to ethanol have been fueled by recent changes in the production process. Broin Companies (Sioux Falls, SD) have developed a technology that removes the germ before the fermentation process. The resulting byproduct contains more protein, less crude fat, and less phosphorus compared to traditional distiller\u27s grains. Feeding even modest levels of DGS can contribute to greater phosphorus excretion from feedlots, suggesting that strategies aimed at reducing phosphorus levels are well warranted.     Growth and persistence of 17 annual medic (Medicago spp.) accessions on clay soils in central Queensland

    Seventeen accessions of annual medics were evaluated on clay soil sites at Emerald, Theodore, Biloela and Mundubbera, central Queensland. Successful medics could have a role in both permanent and ley pastures. However, these are marginal areas for medics with winter (June-August) rainfalls of 80-100 mm. The accessions were selected on the basis of results in southern Queensland, a more favoured area for medics. There were 9 accessions of Medicago truncatula (barrel medic), 4 of M. scutellata (snail medic), 2 of M. polymorpha (burr medic) and 1 each of M. aculeata (keg medic) and M. orbicularis (button medic). Lucerne (M. sativa) cv. Trifecta was sown at 3 sites. All sites except Theodore were irrigated in the year of establishment (1993). The medic seedlings at Theodore died in 1993 and the trial was resown in 1994. Measurements were made of seed set in the first year and whenever it occurred in later years, seedling density in most years and yield when there was adequate growth. Selected measurements were made of soil seed reserves. Measurements ceased in 1998

    Beta-adrenergic agonists are commonly used in livestock production to accelerate growth by enhancing lean tissue gain. These compounds repartition nutrients away from fat deposition and toward protein accretion. Generally, increased growth is associated with ractopamine feeding, which improves feed conversion and increases body weight gain. However, little data exists on the effects of ractopamine-HCl on live performance or carcass characteristics of beef heifers. Data released from Elanco Animal Health indicate that differences between gender may exist in response to ractopamine, and therefore appropriate strategies for the administration of this compound must be defined for heifers independent of those for steers.     We present an exact closed form expression for the {\em finite temperature} first-order density matrix of a harmonically trapped ideal Fermi gas in any dimension. This constitutes a much sought after generalization of the recent results in the literature, where exact expressions have been limited to quantities derived from the {\em diagonal} first-order density matrix. We compare our exact results with the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA) and demonstrate numerically that the TFA provides an excellent description of the first-order density matrix in the large-N limit. As an interesting application, we derive a closed form expression for the finite temperature Hartree-Fock exchange energy of a two-dimensional parabolically confined quantum dot. We numerically test this exact result against the 2D TF exchange functional, and comment on the applicability of the local-density approximation (LDA) to the exchange energy of an inhomogeneous 2D Fermi gas.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures included in the text, RevTeX4.     Some exact results for a trapped quantum gas at finite temperature

    We present closed analytical expressions for the particle and kinetic energy spatial densities at finite temperatures for a system of noninteracting fermions (bosons) trapped in a d-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential. For d=2 and 3, exact expressions for the N-particle densities are used to calculate perturbatively the temperature dependence of the splittings of the energy levels in a given shell due to a very weak interparticle interaction in a dilute Fermi gas. In two dimensions, we obtain analytically the surprising result that the |l|-degeneracy in a harmonic oscillator shell is not lifted in the lowest order even when the exact, rather than the Thomas-Fermi expression for the particle density is used. We also demonstrate rigorously (in two dimensions) the reduction of the exact zero-temperature fermionic expressions to the Thomas-Fermi form in the large-N limit.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures include

    Statistics for Fission-Track Thermochronology

    This chapter introduces statistical tools to extract geologically meaningful information from fission-track (FT) data using both the external detector and LA-ICP-MS methods. The spontaneous fission of 238U is a Poisson process resulting in large single-grain age uncertainties. To overcome this imprecision, it is nearly always necessary to analyse multiple grains per sample. The degree to which the analytical uncertainties can explain the observed scatter of the single-grain data can be visually assessed on a radial plot and objectively quantified by a chi-square test. For sufficiently low values of the chi-square statistic (or sufficiently high p values), the pooled age of all the grains gives a suitable description of the underlying ‘true’ age population. Samples may fail the chi-square test for several reasons. A first possibility is that the true age population does not consist of a single discrete age component, but is characterised by a continuous range of ages. In this case, a ‘random effects’ model can constrain the true age distribution using two parameters: the ‘central age’ and the ‘(over)dispersion’. A second reason why FT data sets might fail the chi-square test is if they are underlain by multimodal age distributions. Such distributions may consist of discrete age components, continuous age distributions, or a combination of the two. Formalised statistical tests such as chi-square can be useful in preventing overfitting of relatively small data sets. However, they should be used with caution when applied to large data sets (including length measurements) which generate sufficient statistical ‘power’ to reject any simple yet geologically plausible hypothesis

    High-Accuracy X-Ray Diffraction Analysis of Phase Evolution Sequence During Devitrification of Cu50Zr50 Metallic Glass

    Real-time high-energy X-ray diffraction (HEXRD) was used to investigate the crystallization kinetics and phase selection sequence for constant-heating-rate devitrification of fully amorphous Cu50Zr50, using heating rates from 10 K/min to 60 K/min (10 °C/min to 60 °C/min). In situ HEXRD patterns were obtained by the constant-rate heating of melt-spun ribbons under synchrotron radiation. High-accuracy phase identification and quantitative assessment of phase fraction evolution though the duration of the observed transformations were performed using a Rietveld refinement method. Results for 10 K/min (10 °C/min) heating show the apparent simultaneous formation of three phases, orthorhombic Cu10Zr7, tetragonal CuZr2 (C11b), and cubic CuZr (B2), at 706 K (433 °C), followed immediately by the dissolution of the CuZr (B2) phase upon continued heating to 789 K (516 °C). Continued heating results in reprecipitation of the CuZr (B2) phase at 1002 K (729 °C), with the material transforming completely to CuZr (B2) by 1045 K (772 °C). The Cu5Zr8 phase, previously reported to be a devitrification product in C50Zr50, was not observed in the present study

Conceptual analysis was conducted by both authors.publication-status: Publishedtypes: ArticlePhilosophers of biology, along with everyone else, generally perceive life to fall into two broad categories, the microbes and macrobes, and then pay most of their attention to the latter. ‘Macrobe’ is the word we propose for larger life forms, and we use it as part of an argument for microbial equality. We suggest that taking more notice of microbes – the dominant life form on the planet, both now and throughout evolutionary history – will transform some of the philosophy of biology’s standard ideas on ontology, evolution, taxonomy and biodiversity. We set out a number of recent developments in microbiology – including biofilm formation, chemotaxis, quorum sensing and gene transfer – that highlight microbial capacities for cooperation and communication and break down conventional thinking that microbes are solely or primarily single-celled organisms. These insights also bring new perspectives to the levels of selection debate, as well as to discussions of the evolution and nature of multicellularity, and to neo-Darwinian understandings of evolutionary mechanisms. We show how these revisions lead to further complications for microbial classification and the philosophies of systematics and biodiversity. Incorporating microbial insights into the philosophy of biology will challenge many of its assumptions, but also give greater scope and depth to its investigations
