JointZone: users' view of an adaptive online learning resource for rheumatology
This paper describes an online learning resource for rheumatology that was designed for a wide constituency of users including primarily undergraduate medical students and health professionals. Although the online resources afford an informal learning environment, the site was pedagogically designed to comply with the general recommendations of the Standing Committee on Training and Education of EULAR (European League Against Rheumatism) for a rheumatology core curriculum. Any Internet user may freely browse the site content with optional registration providing access to adaptive features that personalize the user’s view, for example, providing a reading history and targeted support based on scores from completed case studies. The site has now been available since early 2003, and an online survey of site registrants indicates that well structured pedagogical materials that reflect a learners’ dominant ‘community of practice’ appear to be a successful aid to informal learning
Oil quality in diesel engines with on line oil cleaning using a heated lubricating oil recycler
A method of cleaning the oil on line was investigatedusing a bypass fine particulate filter followed by an infra
red heater to remove water and light diesel fractions in
the oil. This was tested on a range of on road vehicles
and a Ford 1.8 litre IDI passenger car engine on a test
bed. Comparison was made with the oil quality on the
same vehicles and engines without the on-line recycler.
Test times were from 200 to 1500 hours of oil ageing and
some of the tests showed that the oil quality was still
good after 4 times the normal oil life. The results showed
that the on line oil recycler cleaning system reduced the
rate of fall of the TBN and rate of increase of the TAN.
There was a very significant reduction in the soot in oil
and the fuel dilution. There was also a consistent reduction
in all the wear metals apart from copper and a
decrease in the rate of reduction of oil additives. There
was also measured on the Ford IDI engine a 5% reduced
fuel consumption. Many of these effects were attributed
to an influence of the cleaner oil on reduced engine
deposits

The Application and Evaluation of Adaptive Hypermedia Techniques in Web-based Medical Education
This article discusses the design issues involved in delivering web-based learning materials. An existing application in the medical domain – JointZone - is used to illustrate how personalization and an interactive environment can be incorporated into web-based learning. This work applies the combination of an adaptive hypermedia, situated learning approach, and hypermedia linking concepts to facilitate online learning. A usability study was carried out on the work described and an evaluation was undertaken to measure the effect of personalization on various learning factors. The evaluation outcome was analyzed subjectively and objectively. The results proved to be contradictory but nevertheless, the work gives new insights into the use of technology to support learning
Weak force detection using a double Bose-Einstein condensate
A Bose-Einstein condensate may be used to make precise measurements of weak
forces, utilizing the macroscopic occupation of a single quantum state. We
present a scheme which uses a condensate in a double well potential to do this.
The required initial state of the condensate is discussed, and the limitations

Boundary of two mixed Bose-Einstein condensates
The boundary of two mixed Bose-Einstein condensates interacting repulsively
was considered in the case of spatial separation at zero temperature.
Analytical expressions for density distribution of condensates were obtained by
solving two coupled nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations in cases corresponding
weak and strong separation. These expressions allow to consider excitation
spectrum of a particle confined in the vicinity of the boundary as well as

Constraining Warm Inflation with the Cosmic Microwave Background
We discuss the spectrum of scalar density perturbations from warm inflation
when the friction coefficient in the inflaton equation is dependent on
the inflaton field. The spectral index of scalar fluctuations depends on a new
slow-roll parameter constructed from . A numerical integration of the
perturbation equations is performed for a model of warm inflation and gives a

Quantum gates with neutral atoms: Controlling collisional interactions in time dependent traps
We theoretically study specific schemes for performing a fundamental
two-qubit quantum gate via controlled atomic collisions by switching
microscopic potentials. In particular we calculate the fidelity of a gate
operation for a configuration where a potential barrier between two atoms is
instantaneously removed and restored after a certain time. Possible
implementations could be based on microtraps created by magnetic and electric
