Nonabelian Berry Phases in Baryons
URL: http://www-spht.cea.fr/articles/T93/012 http://fr.arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/9301242International audienceWe show how generic nonabelian gauge fields can be induced in baryons when a hierarchy of fast degrees of freedom is integrated out. We identify them with nonabelian Berry potentials and discuss their role in transmuting quantum numbers in bag and soliton models of baryons. The resulting baryonic spectra both for light and heavy quark systems are generic and resemble closely the excitation spectrum of diatomic molecules. The symmetry restoration in the system, {\sl i.e.\/} the electronic rotational invariance in diatomic molecules, the heavy-quark symmetry in heavy baryons etc. is interpreted in terms of the vanishing of nonabelian Berry potentials that otherwise govern the hyperfine splitting
Finite Temperature Correlators in the Schwinger Model
We discuss the correlation function of hadronic currents in the Schwinger
model at finite temperature . We explicitly construct the retarded
correlator in real time and obtain analytical results for the Euclidean
correlator on a torus. Both constructions lead to the same finite temperature
spectral function. The spatial screening lengths in the mesonic channels are
related to the dynamical meson mass and not even in
the infinite temperature limit. The relevance of our results for the finite
temperature problem in four dimensions is discussed.Comment: in LATEX, 30 pages; two figures available on request from the

The Chiral Model of Sakai-Sugimoto at Finite Baryon Density
In the context of holographic QCD we analyze Sakai-Sugimoto's chiral model at
finite baryon density and zero temperature. The baryon number density is
introduced through compact D4 wrapping S^4 at the tip of D8-\bar{D8}. Each
baryon acts as a chiral point-like source distributed uniformly over R^3, and
leads a non-vanishing U(1)_V potential on the brane. For fixed baryon charge
density n_B we analyze the bulk energy density and pressure using the canonical
formalism. The baryonic matter with point like sources is always in the
spontaneously broken phase of chiral symmetry, whatever the density. The
point-like nature of the sources and large N_c cause the matter to be repulsive
as all baryon interactions are omega mediated. Through the induced DBI action
on D8-\bar{D8}, we study the effects of the fixed baryon charge density n_B on
the pion and vector meson masses and couplings. Issues related to vector
dominance in matter in the context of holographic QCD are also discussed.Comment: V3: 39 pages, 16 figures, minor corrections, version to appear in

Views of the Chiral Magnetic Effect
My personal views of the Chiral Magnetic Effect are presented, which starts
with a story about how we came up with the electric-current formula and
continues to unsettled subtleties in the formula. There are desirable features
in the formula of the Chiral Magnetic Effect but some considerations would lead
us to even more questions than elucidations. The interpretation of the produced
current is indeed very non-trivial and it involves a lot of confusions that
have not been resolved.Comment: 19 pages, no figure; typos corrected, references significantly

Negative Parity 70-plet Baryon Masses in the 1/Nc Expansion
The masses of the negative parity SU(6) 70-plet baryons are analyzed in the
1/Nc expansion to order 1/Nc and to first order in SU(3) breaking. At this
level of precision there are twenty predictions. Among them there are the well
known Gell-Mann Okubo and equal spacing relations, and four new relations
involving SU(3) breaking splittings in different SU(3) multiplets. Although the
breaking of SU(6) symmetry occurs at zeroth order in 1/Nc, it turns out to be
small. The dominant source of the breaking is the hyperfine interaction which
is of order 1/Nc. The spin-orbit interaction, of zeroth order in 1/Nc, is
entirely fixed by the splitting between the singlet states Lambda(1405) and
Lambda(1520), and the spin-orbit puzzle is solved by the presence of other
zeroth order operators involving flavor exchange.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figure
Chiral Magnetic Effect in Hydrodynamic Approximation
We review derivations of the chiral magnetic effect (ChME) in hydrodynamic
approximation. The reader is assumed to be familiar with the basics of the
effect. The main challenge now is to account for the strong interactions
between the constituents of the fluid. The main result is that the ChME is not
renormalized: in the hydrodynamic approximation it remains the same as for
non-interacting chiral fermions moving in an external magnetic field. The key
ingredients in the proof are general laws of thermodynamics and the
Adler-Bardeen theorem for the chiral anomaly in external electromagnetic
fields. The chiral magnetic effect in hydrodynamics represents a macroscopic
manifestation of a quantum phenomenon (chiral anomaly). Moreover, one can argue
that the current induced by the magnetic field is dissipation free and talk
about a kind of "chiral superconductivity". More precise description is a
ballistic transport along magnetic field taking place in equilibrium and in
absence of a driving force. The basic limitation is exact chiral limit while
the temperature--excitingly enough- does not seemingly matter. What is still
lacking, is a detailed quantum microscopic picture for the ChME in
hydrodynamics. Probably, the chiral currents propagate through
lower-dimensional defects, like vortices in superfluid. In case of superfluid,
the prediction for the chiral magnetic effect remains unmodified although the
emerging dynamical picture differs from the standard one.Comment: 35 pages, prepared for a volume of the Springer Lecture Notes in

Nonhermitean Random Matrix Models : a Free Random Variable Approach
Using the standard concepts of free random variables, we show that for a
large class of nonhermitean random matrix models, the support of the eigenvalue
distribution follows from their hermitean analogs using a conformal
transformation. We also extend the concepts of free random variables to the
class of nonhermitean matrices, and apply them to the models discussed by
Ginibre-Girko (elliptic ensemble) and Mahaux-Weidenm\"uller (chaotic resonance
scattering).Comment: 7 pages LaTeX, 1 EPS figur
