    Compositional tuning of ferromagnetism in Ga1-xMnxP

    We report the magnetic and transport properties of Ga1-xMnxP synthesized via ion implantation followed by pulsed laser melting over a range of x, namely 0.018 to 0.042. Like Ga1-xMnxAs, Ga1-xMnxP displays a monotonic increase of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature with x associated with the hole-mediated ferromagnetic phase while thermal annealing above 300 C leads to a quenching of ferromagnetism that is accompanied by a reduction of the substitutional fraction of Mn. However, contrary to observations in Ga1-xMnxAs, Ga1-xMnxP is non-metallic over the entire composition range. At the lower temperatures over which the films are ferromagnetic, hole transport occurs via hopping conduction in a Mn-derived band; at higher temperatures it arises from holes in the valence band which are thermally excited across an energy gap that shrinks with x.Comment: To be published in Solid State Communication

    Carrier-mediated ferromagnetic ordering in Mn ion-implanted p+GaAs:C

    Highly p-type GaAs:C was ion-implanted with Mn at differing doses to produce Mn concentrations in the 1 - 5 at.% range. In comparison to LT-GaAs and n+GaAs:Si samples implanted under the same conditions, transport and magnetic properties show marked differences. Transport measurements show anomalies, consistent with observed magnetic properties and with epi- LT-(Ga,Mn)As, as well as the extraordinary Hall Effect up to the observed magnetic ordering temperature (T_C). Mn ion-implanted p+GaAs:C with as-grown carrier concentrations > 10^20 cm^-3 show remanent magnetization up to 280 K

    Healthspan improvement and anti-aggregation effects induced by a marine-derived structural proteasome activator

    Proteasome activation has been shown to promote cellular and organismal healthspan and to protect against aggregation-related conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Various natural compounds have been described for their proteasome activating properties but scarce data exist on marine metabolites that often possess unique chemical structures, exhibiting pronounced bioactivities with novel mechanisms of action. In this study, we have identified for the first time a marine structural proteasome activator, namely (1R,3E,6R,7Z,11S,12S)-dolabella-3,7,18-trien-6,17-olide (DBTO). DBTO activates the 20S proteasome complex in cell-free assays but also in cellulo. Continuous supplementation of human primary fibroblasts with DBTO throughout their cellular lifespan confers an improved healthspan while ameliorated health status is also observed in wild type (wt) Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) nematodes supplemented with DBTO. Furthermore, treatment of various AD nematode models, as well as of human cells of neuronal origin challenged with exogenously added Aβ peptide, with DBTO results in enhanced protection against Aβ-induced proteotoxicity. In total, our results reveal the first structural proteasome activator derived from the marine ecosystem and highlight its potential as a compound that might be used for healthspan maintenance and preventive strategies against proteinopathies, such as AD. © 2022 The Author

    Competition and moral behavior: A meta-analysis of forty-five crowd-sourced experimental designs

    Does competition affect moral behavior? This fundamental question has been debated among leading scholars for centuries, and more recently, it has been tested in experimental studies yielding a body of rather inconclusive empirical evidence. A potential source of ambivalent empirical results on the same hypothesis is design heterogeneity—variation in true effect sizes across various reasonable experimental research protocols. To provide further evidence on whether competition affects moral behavior and to examine whether the generalizability of a single experimental study is jeopardized by design heterogeneity, we invited independent research teams to contribute experimental designs to a crowd-sourced project. In a large-scale online data collection, 18,123 experimental participants were randomly allocated to 45 randomly selected experimental designs out of 95 submitted designs. We find a small adverse effect of competition on moral behavior in a meta-analysis of the pooled data. The crowd-sourced design of our study allows for a clean identification and estimation of the variation in effect sizes above and beyond what could be expected due to sampling variance. We find substantial design heterogeneity—estimated to be about 1.6 times as large as the average standard error of effect size estimates of the 45 research designs—indicating that the informativeness and generalizability of results based on a single experimental design are limited. Drawing strong conclusions about the underlying hypotheses in the presence of substantive design heterogeneity requires moving toward much larger data collections on various experimental designs testing the same hypothesis

    A multi-country test of brief reappraisal interventions on emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased negative emotions and decreased positive emotions globally. Left unchecked, these emotional changes might have a wide array of adverse impacts. To reduce negative emotions and increase positive emotions, we tested the effectiveness of reappraisal, an emotion-regulation strategy that modifies how one thinks about a situation. Participants from 87 countries and regions (n = 21,644) were randomly assigned to one of two brief reappraisal interventions (reconstrual or repurposing) or one of two control conditions (active or passive). Results revealed that both reappraisal interventions (vesus both control conditions) consistently reduced negative emotions and increased positive emotions across different measures. Reconstrual and repurposing interventions had similar effects. Importantly, planned exploratory analyses indicated that reappraisal interventions did not reduce intentions to practice preventive health behaviours. The findings demonstrate the viability of creating scalable, low-cost interventions for use around the world.
