    Motor-Skill Learning in Alzheimer’s Disease: A Review with an Eye to the Clinical Practice

    Since elderly people suffering from dementia want to go on living independently for as long as possible, they need to be able to maintain familiar and learn new practical skills. Although explicit or declarative learning methods are mostly used to train new skills, it is hypothesized that implicit or procedural techniques may be more effective in this population. The present review discusses 23 experimental studies on implicit motor-skill learning in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). All studies found intact implicit motor-learning capacities. Subsequently, it is elaborated how these intact learning abilities can be exploited in the patients’ rehabilitation with respect to the variables ‘practice’ and ‘feedback.’ Recommendations for future research are provided, and it is concluded that if training programs are adjusted to specific needs and abilities, older people with AD are well able to (re)learn practical motor skills, which may enhance their autonomy

    The sensorium at work: the sensory phenomenology of the working body

    The sociology of the body and the sociology of work and occupations have both neglected to some extent the study of the ‘working body’ in paid employment, particularly with regard to empirical research into the sensory aspects of working practices. This gap is perhaps surprising given how strongly the sensory dimension features in much of working life. This article is very much a first step in calling for a more phenomenological, embodied and ‘fleshy’ perspective on the body in employment, and examines some of the theoretical and conceptual resources available to researchers wishing to focus on the lived working-body experiences of the sensorium. We also consider some possible representational forms for a more evocative, phenomenologically-inspired portrayal of sensory, lived-working-body experiences, and offer suggestions for future avenues of research

    Este ensaio propõe-se a des-velar facetas do tema suicídio por meio do discurso de diferentes autores que tratam do tema, bem como mediante os contatos que pude ter, durante os estágios de aprendizado, coin pessoas que tentaram suicídio. Minha trajetória acadêmica inclui uma incursão pelas idéias da fenomnenologia, particularmente pelos pensamentos de Heidegger, ou seja, análise existencial do homem enquanto ser-aí. Nesse sentido, a compreensão da pessoa que decide colocar fim à sua existência, pode se constituir, na perspectiva desta análise, como um caminho para reconstrução e redimensionamento de suas perspectivas existenciais.<br>This essay proposes to reveal facets of the suicide through the discourse of differents authors treating this theme as well as through contacts that I was able to have in my nursing training, through my academic trajectory. This trajectory includes an incursion by phenomenological ideas, mainly by the ideas of Heidegger and his existencial analysis of the man as being-there. In this way, the understanding of a person who decides to finalize his/her existence, can be, by the existencial analysis perspective, a way to reconstruct and redimension his/her existencial perspectives
