The Sun's position in the sky
We express the position of the Sun in the sky as a function of time and the
observer's geographic coordinates. Our method is based on applying rotation
matrices to vectors describing points on the celestial sphere. We also derive
direct expressions, as functions of date of the year and geographic latitude,
for the duration of daylight, the maximum and minimum altitudes of the Sun, and
the cardinal directions to sunrise and sunset. We discuss how to account for
the eccentricity of the earth's orbit, the precessions of the equinoxes and the
perihelion, the size of the solar disk, and atmospheric refraction. We
illustrate these results by computing the dates of "Manhattanhenge" (when
sunset aligns with the east-west streets on the main traffic grid for
Manhattan, in New York City), by plotting the altitude of the Sun over
representative cities as a function of time, and by showing plots ("analemmas")

Z2 Monopoles, Vortices, and the Deconfinement Transition in Mixed Action SU(2) Gauge Theory
Adding separate chemical potentials lambda and gamma for Z2 monopoles and
vortices respectively in the Villain form of the mixed fundamental-adjoint
action for the SU(2) lattice gauge theory, we investigate their role in the
interplay between the deconfinement and bulk phase transitions using Monte
Carlo techniques. Setting lambda to be nonzero, we find that the line of
deconfinement transitions is shifted in the coupling plane but it behaves
curiously also like the bulk transition line for large enough adjoint coupling,
as for lambda=0. In a narrow range of couplings, however, we find separate
deconfinement and bulk phase transitions on the same lattice for nonzero and
large lambda, suggesting the two to be indeed coincident in the region where a
first order deconfinement phase transition is seen. In the limit of large
lambda and gamma, we obtain only lines of second order deconfinement phase

We investigate the adjoint SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions with
the Wilson plaquette action modified by a Z(2) monopole suppression term. For
the zero-twist sector we report indications for the existence of a finite

Using conceptual metaphor and functional grammar to explore how language used in physics affects student learning
This paper introduces a theory about the role of language in learning
physics. The theory is developed in the context of physics students' and
physicists' talking and writing about the subject of quantum mechanics. We
found that physicists' language encodes different varieties of analogical
models through the use of grammar and conceptual metaphor. We hypothesize that
students categorize concepts into ontological categories based on the
grammatical structure of physicists' language. We also hypothesize that
students over-extend and misapply conceptual metaphors in physicists' speech
and writing. Using our theory, we will show how, in some cases, we can explain
student difficulties in quantum mechanics as difficulties with language.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. ST:PE
Isometric Embeddings and Noncommutative Branes in Homogeneous Gravitational Waves
We characterize the worldvolume theories on symmetric D-branes in a
six-dimensional Cahen-Wallach pp-wave supported by a constant Neveu-Schwarz
three-form flux. We find a class of flat noncommutative euclidean D3-branes
analogous to branes in a constant magnetic field, as well as curved
noncommutative lorentzian D3-branes analogous to branes in an electric
background. In the former case the noncommutative field theory on the branes is
constructed from first principles, related to dynamics of fuzzy spheres in the
worldvolumes, and used to analyse the flat space limits of the string theory.
The worldvolume theories on all other symmetric branes in the background are
local field theories. The physical origins of all these theories are described
through the interplay between isometric embeddings of branes in the spacetime
and the Penrose-Gueven limit of AdS3 x S3 with Neveu-Schwarz three-form flux.
The noncommutative field theory of a non-symmetric spacetime-filling D-brane is
also constructed, giving a spatially varying but time-independent
noncommutativity analogous to that of the Dolan-Nappi model.Comment: 52 pages; v2: References adde
Evidencing the clinical and economic burden of musculoskeletal disorders in Tanzania: Paving the way for urgent rheumatology service development
Since 1990, there has been a dramatic rise in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) within low-and middleincome countries (LMICs); the burden of NCDs in LMICs rose from accounting for 39% of disability-adjusted life years in 1990 to 66% in 2019 [1]. In response to this growing burden, global, regional and national health institutions have become increasingly active in orchestrating a response to NCDs. The global response to NCDs has prioritized cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease and diabetes, with the World Health Organization Regional Office in Africa adding region-specific NCD burdens, such as sickle cell disease, to broaden priorities [2]. Amidst this galvanization of efforts to tackle NCDs, musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions have been relatively overlooked and neglected, resulting in an urgent need for service development to respond to MSK conditions in LMICs [1]
State-of-the-art in product service-systems
A Product Service-System (PSS) is an integrated combination of products and services.
This western concept embraces a service-led competitive strategy, environmental sustainability,
and the basis to differentiate from competitors who simply offer lower priced products. This
paper aims to report the state-of-the-art of PSS research by presenting a clinical review of
literature currently available on this topic. The literature is classified and the major outcomes
of each study are addressed and analysed. On this basis, this paper defines the PSS concept,
reports on its origin and features, gives examples of applications along with potential benefits
and barriers to adoption, summarises available tools and methodologies, and identifies future
research challenges

A pragmatic cognitive model for the interpretation of verbal–visual communication in television news programmes
The combination of the verbal and the visual track in television news discourse poses a considerable analytical challenge. In the viewers’ minds the co-habitation of these two semiotic channels triggers a complex network of inferential processes, based on expectations of coherence and relevance, with which they make sense of the representation of the world offered in the news. Through the analysis of a number of news items, this article considers the cognitive processes which viewers may activate when extracting meaning from the multimedial messages contained in television news. The analysis of news items from two British television networks offered by the authors traces the possible meanings that, it is assumed, become available to a potential, ‘idealised’ or ‘implied’ viewer, who accesses the information with some social and cultural knowledge of contemporary Britain. Building on existing studies, the article proposes a model for the classification of verbal–visual relations
General massive one-loop off-shell three-point functions
In this work we compute the most general massive one-loop off-shell
three-point vertex in D-dimensions, where the masses, external momenta, and
exponents of propagators are arbitrary. This follows our previous paper in
which we have calculated several new hypergeometric series representations for
massless and massive (with equal masses) scalar one-loop three-point functions,
