User participatory methods for inclusive design and research in autism: A case study in teaching UX design
© Springer International Publishing AG 2017. User participatory design is considered to be one of the best methods for understanding the needs of a target audience and creating high quality, well designed solutions to meet their needs. For many design students, the principles of participatory design in the creation of new user experiences are part of their curriculum. However, the involvement of disabled persons into the user experience design (UXD) process can be difficult in an educational setting. Often persons with autism and cognitive disabilities are excluded from user experience data collection due to their lack of sufficient cognitive ability and language skills to participate in these research methods in meaningful ways. Further, educators may shy away from involving this group due to institutional regulations and ethical concerns. This paper presents a case study introducing design students to inclusive UXD strategies and observing autistic children, using an approach called the âConnectivity Modelâ. The model avoids the requirement for complex ethical clearance by facilitating observations via recorded videos. We present outcomes and evaluate the model against the most pertinent needs of these children
Modeling the emergence of a new language: Naming Game with hybridization
In recent times, the research field of language dynamics has focused on the
investigation of language evolution, dividing the work in three evolutive
steps, according to the level of complexity: lexicon, categories and grammar.
The Naming Game is a simple model capable of accounting for the emergence of a
lexicon, intended as the set of words through which objects are named. We
introduce a stochastic modification of the Naming Game model with the aim of
characterizing the emergence of a new language as the result of the interaction
of agents. We fix the initial phase by splitting the population in two sets
speaking either language A or B. Whenever the result of the interaction of two
individuals results in an agent able to speak both A and B, we introduce a
finite probability that this state turns into a new idiom C, so to mimic a sort
of hybridization process. We study the system in the space of parameters
defining the interaction, and show that the proposed model displays a rich
variety of behaviours, despite the simple mean field topology of interactions.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, presented at IWSOS 2013 Palma de Mallorca, the

Mission Control Center - Houston
The Mission Control Center - Houston (MCC-H) was designed to control all NASA manned space flights from the first Gemini rendezvous through the Apollo program. The MCC-H is a three-story building which contains 112,000 square feet, and which required 30 months to implement. It has a capability to control a live mission and a simulation simultaneously, or two simulations simultaneously. This capability was provided by locating duplicate operational areas on separate floors. The facility layout is shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3.
The MCC-H is comprised of five basic systems: the Display/Control System, the Real Time Computer Complex (RTCC), the Communications System, the Command System, and the Simulation, Checkout, and Training System (SCATS). These systems are designed to provide the flight operations team with the necessary real-time data and associated reference data for rapid assessment of mission progress, and for rapid decisions in the event of abnormal or emergency situations. The reference data are the result of the enormous effort that is spent prior to the mission in analyzing every possible contingency situation that may occur, and contains predicted trend data, mission rules and carefully planned, detailed operational procedures for regulating the mission
Theories of the deep: combining salience and network analyses to produce mental model visualizations of a coastal British Columbia food web
Arriving at shared mental models among multiple stakeholder groups can be crucial for successful management of contested social-ecological systems (SES). Academia can help by first eliciting stakeholdersâ initial, often tacit, beliefs about a SES, and representing them in useful ways. We demonstrate a new recombination of techniques for this purpose, focusing specifically on tacit beliefs about food webs. Our approach combines freelisting and sorting techniques, salience analysis, and ultimately network analysis, to produce accessible visualizations of aggregate mental models that can then be used to facilitate discussion or generate further hypotheses about cognitive drivers of conflict. The case study we draw upon to demonstrate this technique is Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada. There, an immanent upsurge in the sea otter (Enhydra lutris) population, which competes with humans for shellfish, has produced tension among government managers, and both First Nations and non-First Nations residents. Our approach helps explain this tension by visually highlighting which trophic relationships appear most cognitively salient among the lay public. We also include speculative representations of models held by managers, and pairs of contrasting demographic subgroups, to further demonstrate potential uses of the method
Global Music Perspectives: Music Outside the Western Canon in Local Schools
As a class, we are designing a research project for investigating how music teachers from counties in South-Central Pennsylvania use music from outside the Western canon (i.e. world music ). We are performing a qualitative study by interviewing k-12 music teachers from school districts in South-Central Pennsylvania. Teachers may choose to participate in a focus group interview with other teachers or in one-on-one interviews. The focus group interview will not exceed two hours and the one-on-one interviews will not exceed an hour. The interviews will be guided using a questionnaire (see attached), but the conversation may deviate from these questions at the discretion of the interviewer(s). We will transcribe these interviews to extract common thematic materials and relevant information. We will also compile a literature review of relevant peer-reviewed articles and use the data from said articles to expand upon our gathered information
Triple function of Synaptotagmin 7 ensures efficiency of high-frequency transmission at central GABAergic synapses
Synaptotagmin 7 (Syt7) is thought to be a Ca2+ sensor that mediates asynchronous transmitter release and facilitation at synapses. However, Syt7 is strongly expressed in fast-spiking, parvalbumin-expressing GABAergic interneurons, and the output synapses of these neurons produce only minimal asynchronous release and show depression rather than facilitation. To resolve this apparent contradiction, we examined the effects of genetic elimination of Syt7 on synaptic transmission at the GABAergic basket cell (BC)-Purkinje cell (PC) synapse in cerebellum. Our results indicate that at the BC-PC synapse, Syt7 contributes to asynchronous release, pool replenishment, and facilitation. In combination, these three effects ensure efficient transmitter release during high-frequency activity and guarantee frequency independence of inhibition. Our results identify a distinct function of Syt7: ensuring the efficiency of high-frequency inhibitory synaptic transmissio
Density-functional study of Cu atoms, monolayers, and coadsorbates on polar ZnO surfaces
The structure and electronic properties of single Cu atoms, copper monolayers
and thin copper films on the polar oxygen and zinc terminated surfaces of ZnO
are studied using periodic density-functional calculations. We find that the
binding energy of Cu atoms sensitively depends on how charge neutrality of the
polar surfaces is achieved. Bonding is very strong if the surfaces are
stabilized by an electronic mechanism which leads to partially filled surface
bands. As soon as the surface bands are filled (either by partial Cu coverage,
by coadsorbates, or by the formation of defects), the binding energy decreases
significantly. In this case, values very similar to those found for nonpolar
surfaces and for copper on finite ZnO clusters are obtained. Possible
implications of these observations concerning the growth mode of copper on
polar ZnO surfaces and their importance in catalysis are discussed.Comment: 6 pages with 2 postscript figures embedded. Uses REVTEX and epsf

Relational Values Resonate Broadly and Differently Than Intrinsic or Instrumental Values, or the New Ecological Paradigm
Value orientations used to explain or justify conservation have been rooted in arguments about how much and in what context to emphasize the intrinsic versus instrumental value of nature. Equally prominent are characterizations of beliefs known as the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP), often used to help explain pro-environmental behaviour. A recent alternative to these positions has been identified as ârelational valueââbroadly, values linking people and ecosystems via tangible and intangible relationships to nature as well as the principles, virtues and notions of a good life that may accompany these. This paper examines whether relational values are distinct from other value orientation and have potential to alleviate the intrinsic-instrumental debate. To test this possibility, we sought to operationalize the constructârelational valuesâby developing six relational statements. We ask: 1) Do the individual statements used to characterize relational values demonstrate internal coherence as either a single or multi-dimensional construct? 2) Do relational value statements (including those strongly stated) resonate with diverse populations? 3) Do people respond to relational value statements in a consistently different way than NEP scale statements? Data for this work is drawn from an online panel of residents of northeastern US (n = 400), as well as a sample of Costa Rican farmers (n = 253) and tourists in Costa Rica (n = 260). Results indicate relational values are distinct as a construct when compared to the NEP
