Persistent varicella as the initial manifestation of systemic lymphoma
Varicella is a common benign childhood disease that often presents in adolescents and adults in a more severe form. We report a previously healthy 50-year-old man who developed multiple necrotic cutaneous ulcers associated with fever, asthenia and anorexia. Physical examination revealed few tense hemorrhagic vesicles on the trunk and necrotic cutaneous ulcers scattered over the entire cutaneous surface. After the diagnosis of varicella with varicella pneumonia was established, treatment with acyclovir was instituted. His poor response to treatment was indicative of immune compromise; an underlying peripheral T-cell lymphoma was discovered
Erupção a fármaco com eosinofilia e sintomas sistémicos (síndrome dress)
Adverse cutaneous reactions to drugs are frequent, affecting from 2% to 3% of all
hospitalized patients. But only about 2% of these cutaneous reactions are severe and
seldom are fatal. The term drug hypersensitivity syndrome refers to a specific severe drug
reaction, including skin rash, fever, lymph node enlargement, and single or multiple organ
involvement. The cutaneous rash is usually morbilliform. The drugs associated with the
syndrome are: anticonvulsants, ACE inhibitors, Beta-blockers, allopurinol and sulphonamides.
The differencial diagnosis includes maculopapular rash, exfoliative dermatitis,
acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis and Sézary syndrome. The interval between
the starting of drug therapy and the onset of cutaneous reactions may be at least one
month, and therefore the implication of the drug in the aetiology may be subdiagnosed.
As
desta patologia
Application of cholesterol determination method to indirectly detect meat and bone meals in ruminant feeds
Não InformadoThe aim of this study was to verify the presence of meat and bone meal (MBM) in ruminant feed, by identifying the cholesterol using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. The proposed method demonstrated precision, trueness, and capability to detect MBM in the ruminant feed. The aim of this study was to verify the presence of meat and bone meal (MBM) in ruminant feed, by identifying the cholesterol using gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. Virtual reality and associated technologies in disability research and intervention
This paper concerns the application of virtual reality and associated technologies (VRAT) in the disability research and intervention field. By reviewing a 144 studies presented at the
International Conference Series on Disability, Virtual Reality and Associated Technologies (1996-2006), our analytic work examine the underlying conceptual frameworks of disability and methodological rationales used in selected papers. In the last 15 years, there was a paradigmatic shift from the medical to the biopsychosocial model of disability. Yet, our analyses indicate that such shift is not clearly reflected in the way VRAT have been addressing disability issues. The present manuscript offers recommendations regarding definition of goals,
methodological procedures, and assessment rationales in order to stimulate discussions on how the use of VRAT can be improved in the field of disability research and practic
THE BEHAVE APPLICATION: AN EVIDENCE-BASED TOOL TO MANAGE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL BEHAVIOURAL DIFFICULTIES
Social Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD) are a persistent and multiple manifestation of maladaptive behaviours which interfere with the students’ learning, social functioning and development and/or that of their peers. They may become apparent through withdrawn, passive, aggressive or self-injurious tendencies. The prevalence of these disorders is 2-16% of the general population. Children with SEBD, diagnosed or not, are likely to live in social isolation, to receive a poor education, and they risk becoming deviant teenagers, or unemployed adults. A way to approach SEBD with consistent level of educational success is to equip teachers with proper training on practical and proven classroom management strategies, but also with evidence-based tools that can help them to effectively control difficult behaviours with confidence and competence. This contribution presents the web-based BEHAVE application aimed to ease the way for teachers to apply behavioural evidence-based interventions at school. The paper describes the main features of the BEHAVE application: the definition of the behaviour to be observed, the creation and selection of appropriate measures, the collection of behavioural data, and the statistical analysis to evaluate the direction and the power of the effect of the carried-out intervention
