Change in blood glucose level in rats after immobilization
Experiments were carried out on male white rats divided into four groups. In group one the blood glucose level was determined immediately after immobilization. In the other three groups, two hours following immobilization, the blood glucose level was determined every 20 minutes for 3 hours 40 minutes by the glucose oxidase method. Preliminary immobilization for 2 hours removed the increase in the blood glucose caused by the stress reaction. By the 2nd hour of immobilization in the presence of continuing stress, the blood glucose level stabilized and varied within 42 + or - 5.5 and 47 + or - 8.1 mg %. Within 2 hours after the immobilization, the differences in the blood glucose level of the rats from the control groups were statistically insignificant
Temperature-dependent magnetospectroscopy of HgTe quantum wells
We report on magnetospectroscopy of HgTe quantum wells in magnetic fields up
to 45 T in temperature range from 4.2 K up to 185 K. We observe intra- and
inter-band transitions from zero-mode Landau levels, which split from the
bottom conduction and upper valence subbands, and merge under the applied
magnetic field. To describe experimental results, realistic
temperature-dependent calculations of Landau levels have been performed. We
show that although our samples are topological insulators at low temperatures
only, the signature of such phase persists in optical transitions at high
temperatures and high magnetic fields. Our results demonstrate that
temperature-dependent magnetospectroscopy is a powerful tool to discriminate
trivial and topological insulator phases in HgTe quantum wells
Observation of Spin Relaxation Anisotropy in Semiconductor Quantum Wells
Spin relaxation of two-dimensional electrons in asymmetrical (001) AlGaAs
quantum wells are measured by means of Hanle effect. Three different spin
relaxation times for spins oriented along [110], [1-10] and [001]
crystallographic directions are extracted demonstrating anisotropy of
D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation mechanism. The relative strengths of Rashba
and Dresselhaus terms describing the spin-orbit coupling in semiconductor
quantum well structures. It is shown that the Rashba spin-orbit splitting is
about four times stronger than the Dresselhaus splitting in the studied

Phase diagrams of magnetopolariton gases
The magnetic field effect on phase transitions in electrically neutral
bosonic systems is much less studied than those in fermionic systems, such as
superconducting or ferromagnetic phase transitions. Nevertheless, composite
bosons are strongly sensitive to magnetic fields: both their internal structure
and motion as whole particles may be affected. A joint effort of ten
laboratories has been focused on studies of polariton lasers, where
non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates of bosonic quasiparticles,
exciton-polaritons, may appear or disappear under an effect of applied magnetic
fields. Polariton lasers based on pillar or planar microcavities were excited
both optically and electrically. In all cases a pronounced dependence of the
onset to lasing on the magnetic field has been observed. For the sake of
comparison, photon lasing (lasing by an electron-hole plasma) in the presence
of a magnetic field has been studied on the same samples as polariton lasing.
The threshold to photon lasing is essentially governed by the excitonic Mott
transition which appears to be sensitive to magnetic fields too. All the
observed experimental features are qualitatively described within a uniform
model based on coupled diffusion equations for electrons, holes and excitons
and the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for exciton-polariton condensates. Our
research sheds more light on the physics of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein
condensates and the results manifest high potentiality of polariton lasers for
spin-based quantum logic applications.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figure
Unusual weak increase of Curie temperature and lattice parameters in Pr2Fe16.5Zr0.5
Crystal structure and magnetic and thermomagnetic properties of the Pr2Fe17-xMx compounds with M = Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb have been studied. The change of interatomic distances is not enough to explain the growth of the Curie point and it is necessary to assume the distribution of M = Ti, V, Cr, Nb atoms over the lattice positions, similar to that previously published for the Nd2Fe17-xMx compounds. It was established by neutron diffraction that Zr atoms substitute for Pr atoms in the 6c site and do not substitute for Fe atoms as might be expected from the original formula Pr2Fe16.5Zr0.5. So, the real composition of the substituted compound studied is Pr14.8(8)Zr0.52(8)Fe17. Magnetic properties of the GdFeSi - GdTiSi solid solutions
The GdFe1-xTixSi, x=0-0.2 intermetallic compounds with a tetragonal crystal structure of the CeFeSi (P4/nmm)-type have been studied. It was obtained that the lattice parameter c and the Curie temperature increase quickly, whereas the lattice parameter a is almost unchanged in the system with increasing of Ti content. The GdFeSi compound is easily magnetized along the [001] axis, the field of magnetic anisotropy equals to ∼3.8 kOe at T = 90 K. Outbreak of West Nile virus causing severe neurological involvement in children, Nuba Mountains, Sudan, 2002.
An atypical outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) occurred in Ngorban County, South Kordophan, Sudan, from May to August 2002. We investigated the epidemic and conducted a case-control study in the village of Limon. Blood samples were obtained for cases and controls. Patients with obvious sequelae underwent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sampling as well. We used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and neutralization tests for laboratory diagnosis and identified 31 cases with encephalitis, four of whom died. Median age was 36 months. Bivariate analysis did not reveal any significant association with the risk factors investigated. Laboratory analysis confirmed presence of IgM antibodies caused by WNV in eight of 13 cases, indicative of recent viral infection. The unique aspects of the WNW outbreak in Sudan, i.e. disease occurrence solely among children and the clinical domination of encephalitis, involving severe neurological sequelae, demonstrate the continuing evolution of WNV virulence. The spread of such a virus to other countries or continents cannot be excluded

Interaction of the single-particle and collective degrees of freedom in non-magic nuclei: the role of phonon tadpole terms
A method of a consistent consideration of the phonon contributions to mass
and gap operators in non-magic nuclei is developed in the so-called g^2
approximation, where g is the low-lying phonon creation amplitude. It includes
simultaneous accounting for both the usual non-local terms and the phonon
tadpole ones. The relations which allow the tadpoles to be calculated without
any new parameters are derived. As an application of the results, the role of
the phonon tadpoles in the single-particle strength distribution and in the
single-particle energies and gap values has been considered. Relation to the
problem of the surface nature of pairing is discussed.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure
