    A review of carbon monoxide sources, sinks, and concentrations in the earth's atmosphere

    Carbon monoxide is a toxic pollutant which is continually introduced into the earth's atmosphere in significant quantities. There are apparently some mechanisms operating which destroy most of the CO in the atmosphere, i.e., a carbon monoxide sink. These mechanisms have not as yet been established in a quantitative sense. This report discusses the various possible removal mechanisms which warrant serious consideration. Particular emphasis is given to chemical reactions (especially that with OH), soil bacteria and other biological action, and transport effects. The sources of carbon monoxide, both natural and anthropogenic, are reviewed and it is noted that there is quite possibly a significant undefined natural source. Atmospheric CO concentrations are discussed and their implications on carbon monoxide lifetime, sinks and sources are considered

    Origin Of the enhanced flexoelectricity of relaxor ferroelectrics

    We have measured the bending-induced polarization of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 single crystals with compositions at the relaxor-ferroelectric phase boundary. The crystals display very large flexoelectricity, with flexocoupling coefficients an order of magnitude bigger than the theoretical upper limit set by the theories of Kogan and Tagantsev. This enhancement persists in the paraphrase up to a temperature T* that coincides with the start of elastic softening in the crystals. Analysis of the temperature dependence and cross-correlation between flexoelectric, dielectric and elastic properties indicates that the large bendinginduced polarization of relaxor ferroelectrics is not caused by intrinsically giant flexoelectricity, but by the reorientation of polar nanotwins that become ferroelastically active below T*

    Parity Doubling and SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R Restoration in the Hadron Spectrum

    We construct the most general nonlinear representation of chiral SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R broken down spontaneously to the isospin SU(2), on a pair of hadrons of same spin and isospin and opposite parity. We show that any such representation is equivalent, through a hadron field transformation, to two irreducible representations on two hadrons of opposite parity with different masses and axial couplings. This implies that chiral symmetry realized in the Nambu-Goldstone mode does not predict the existence of degenerate multiplets of hadrons of opposite parity nor any relations between their couplings or masses.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure; v3: Note added to clarify implications for hadrons that do not couple to pions: Chiral symmetry can be realized linearly on such states, leading to parity doubling.     Dynamics of the Narrow-Line Region in the Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 1068

    We present dynamical models based on a study of high-resolution long-slit spectra of the narrow-line region (NLR) in NGC 1068 obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard The Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The dynamical models consider the radiative force due to the active galactic nucleus (AGN), gravitational forces from the supermassive black hole (SMBH), nuclear stellar cluster, and galactic bulge, and a drag force due to the NLR clouds interacting with a hot ambient medium. The derived velocity profile of the NLR gas is compared to that obtained from our previous kinematic models of the NLR using a simple biconical geometry for the outflowing NLR clouds. The results show that the acceleration profile due to radiative line driving is too steep to fit the data and that gravitational forces along cannot slow the clouds down, but with drag forces included, the clouds can slow down to the systemic velocity over the range 100--400 pc, as observed. However, we are not able to match the gradual acceleration of the NLR clouds from ~0 to ~100 pc, indicating the need for additional dynamical studies.Comment: Paper prepared by emulateapj version 10/09/06 and accepted for print in Ap

    On the relation between nuclear and nucleon Structure Functions and their moments

    Calculations of nuclear Structure Functions (SF) F_k^A(x,Q^2) routinely exploit a generalized convolution, involving the SF for nucleons F_k^N and the linking SF f^{PN,A} of a fictitious nucleus, composed of point-particles, with the latter usually expressed in terms of hadronic degrees of freedom. For finite Q^2 the approach seemed to be lacking a solid justification and the same is the case for recently proposed, effective nuclear parton distribution functions (pdf), which exactly reproduce the above-mentioned hadronically computed F_k^A. Many years ago Jaffe and West proved the above convolution in the Plane Wave Impulse Approximation (PWIA) for the nuclear components in the convolution. In the present note we extend the above proof to include classes of nuclear Final State Interactions (FSI). One and the same function appears to relate parton distribution functions (pdf) in nuclei and nucleons, and SF for nuclear targets and for nucleons. That relation is the previously conjectured one,with an entirely different interpretation of f^{PN,A}. We conclude with an extensive analysis of moments of nuclear SF based on the generalized convolution. Characteristics of those moments are shown to be quite similar to the same for a nucleon. We conclude that the above evidences asymptotic freedom of a nucleon in a medium and not of a composite nucleus.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure

    Diquarks and Exotic Spectroscopy

    We propose that the recently discovered \Theta baryon is a bound state of four quarks and an antiquark, containing two highly correlated ud-pairs. If so, the \Theta baryon has positive parity, and it lies in an near-ideally mixed SU(3)_{f} \mathbf{\bar{10}}_{f} oplus \mathbf{8}_{f}. The Roper resonance and the P_{11}(1710) fit naturally into this classification. We predict an isospin 3/2 multiplet of \Xi's (S=-2) with J^{\Pi}=\half^{+} around 1750 MeV. A search for manifestly exotic \Xi^{+} and \Xi^{--} in this mass range could provide a sharp test of our proposal. We predict that charm and bottom analogues of the \Theta baryon are stable against strong decays.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, revtex 4, minor corrections and revisions for journal publicatio

    The Insignificance of Global Reheating in the Abell 1068 Cluster: X-Ray Analysis

    We report on a Chandra observation of the massive, medium redshift (z=0.1386) cooling flow cluster Abell 1068. We detect a clear temperature gradient in the X-ray emitting gas from kT ~ 5 keV in the outer part of the cluster down to roughly 2 keV in the core, and a striking increase in the metallicity of the gas toward the cluster center. The total spectrum from the cluster can be fit by a cooling flow model with a total mass deposition rate of 150 solar masses/yr. Within the core (r < 30 kpc), the mass depositon rate of 40 solar masses/yr is comparable to estimates for the star formation rate from optical data. We find an apparent correlation between the cD galaxy's optical isophotes and enhanced metallicity isocontours in the central ~100 kpc of the cluster. We show that the approximate doubling of the metallicity associated with the cD can be plausibly explained by supernova explosions associated with the cD's ambient stellar population and the recent starburst. Finally, we calculate the amount of heating due to thermal conduction and show that this process is unlikely to offset cooling in Abell 1068.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 26 pages, 12 b+w figures, 3 color figure

    Effect of manganese doping on the size effect of lead zirconate titanate thin films and the extrinsic nature of dead layers

    We have investigated the size effect in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films with a range of manganese (Mn) doping concentrations. We found that the size effect in the conventional Pt/PZT/Pt thin-film capacitors could be systematically reduced and almost completely eliminated by increasing Mn doping concentration. The interfacial layer at the electrode-film interface appears to disappear almost entirely for the PZT films with 2% Mn doping levels, confirmed by the fits using the conventional in-series capacitor model. Our work indicates that the size effect in ferroelectrics is extrinsic in nature, supporting the work by Saad et al. Other implications of our results have also been discussed. By comparing a variety of experimental studies in the literature we propose a scenario that the dead layer between PZT (or barium strontium titanate, BST) and metal electrodes such as Pt and Au might have a defective pyrochlore/fluorite structure (possibly with a small portion of ferroelectric perovskite phase).Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure

    Numerical solution of Q^2 evolution equation for the transversity distribution Delta_T q

    We investigate numerical solution of the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli- Parisi (DGLAP) Q^2 evolution equation for the transversity distribution Delta_T q or the structure function h_1. The leading-order (LO) and next-to- leading-order (NLO) evolution equations are studied. The renormalization scheme is MS or overline{MS} in the NLO case. Dividing the variables x and Q^2 into small steps, we solve the integrodifferential equations by the Euler method in the variable Q^2 and by the Simpson method in the variable x. Numerical results indicate that accuracy is better than 1% in the region 10^{-5}<x<0.8 if more than fifty Q^2 steps and more than five hundred x steps are taken. We provide a FORTRAN program for the Q^2 evolution and devolution of the transversity distribution Delta_T q or h_1. Using the program, we show the LO and NLO evolution results of the valence-quark distribution Delta_T u_v + Delta_T d_v, the singlet distribution sum_i (Delta_T q_i + Delta_T qbar_i), and the flavor asymmetric distribution Delta_T ubar - Delta_T dbar.They are also compared with the longitudinal evolution results.Comment: 1+29 pages, LaTeX2e, epsfig.sty, amsmath.sty, 6 eps figures.     Influence, originality and similarity in directed acyclic graphs

    We introduce a framework for network analysis based on random walks on directed acyclic graphs where the probability of passing through a given node is the key ingredient. We illustrate its use in evaluating the mutual influence of nodes and discovering seminal papers in a citation network. We further introduce a new similarity metric and test it in a simple personalized recommendation process. This metric's performance is comparable to that of classical similarity metrics, thus further supporting the validity of our framework.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
