ISLAMIC EDUCATION IN A MINORITY SETTING

This study documents how multicultural education is constructed and implemented in a local pesantren in Tabanan, Bali, Indonesia, namely PBBI (Pesantren Bali Bina Insani). It demonstrates that the multicultural education in this pesantren is based upon the reality of religious, cultural, ethnic, group, and gender diversity that exists surrounding the pesantren. Teaching and administrative staff of this pesantren consist of Muslims and Hindus. Students come from the different socio-cultural backgrounds. Inclusive and tolerance values are incorporated into the curriculum of the pesantren. Multicultural education in this pesantren has become a strategic instrument for adaptation to the Hindu environment where it is located. The pesantren teaches students how to implement Islamic teaching on pluralism and inclusivism in their daily activities

PHILANTHROPY OF ISLAMIC BANKING: A STRATEGY IN STRENGTHENING THE ECONOMIC GROWTH AND PROSPERITY

Islamic banking has philanthropy values presented in zakat and other virtue funds as it aims at enhancing economic growth and prosperity. These philanthropy instruments are one of the differences between Islamic banks and conventional banks. However, the role of zakat and other funds in enhancing people’s welfare needs to be analyzed since the market share of Islamic banks is still growing slowly. This paper is intended to analyze the influence of zakat and the other virtue funds towards the realization of social welfare. In specific, this paper also intends to find a strategy for strengthening welfare through the role of philanthropy of Islamic banks. This study utilizes a quantitative approach that is analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. The results of the paper are: first, zakat has no significant correlation on welfare; second, other virtue funds have a significant correlation with welfare. The strategy proposed is to empower zakat collection agencies funds and establish channeling that link to Islamic banks so that the productive zakat allocation can be managed by Islamic bank customers.==============================================================================================Filantropi Perbankan Syariah: Suatu Strategi dalam Penguatan Pertumbuhan Ekonomi dan Kesejahteraan.  Bank syariah memiliki nilai filantropi dalam zakat dan dana kebajikan lainnya dimana instrumen tersebut bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pertumbuhan ekonomi dan kemakmuran masyarakat. Instrumen ini merupakan salah satu yang membedakan antara bank konvensional dengan bank syariah. Akan tetapi, sejauhmana peran zakat dan instrumen filantropi dalam meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat masih harus dianalisis lebih lanjut mengingat pertumbuhan market share dari bank syariah masih sangat rendah. Paper ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh zakat dan dana kebajikan lainnya terhadap terwujudnya kesejahteraan masyarakat. Paper ini sekaligus bermaksud menemukan suatu strategi dalam penguatan kesejahteraan melalui peran sosial finance bank syariah. Paper ini ditulis dengan pendekatan kuantitatif yang dianalisis dengan spearman correlation test. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahwa: pertama, zakat memiliki korelasi yang tidak signifikan terhadap kesejahteraan; kedua, dana kebajikan memiliki korelasi yang signifikan terhadap kesejahteraan. Adapun strategi penguatan yang perlu dilakukan adalah meningkatkan alokasi dana zakat kepada lembaga amil zakat dan membangun chaneling dengan bank syariah agar alokasi zakat produktif dapat dikelola oleh nasabah bank syariah

Hasan al-Turabi's Pragmatic Approach to Establishing an Islamic State in Sudan

This research examines the pragmatic approach of Hasan al-Turabi, a key figure in the Sudanese Islamic movement, in fighting for an Islamic state. Using qualitative analysis that combines the concepts of pragmatism and social movement theory, this study reveals al Turabi's strategy in translating Islamic ideals into political action, including building alliances with various religious factions and exploiting revolutionary momentum. Findings demonstrate al-Turabi's success in advancing Islamization and shaping Sudan's socio-political landscape but also faced challenges in the consistent implementation of Sharia and protection of the rights of marginalized groups. Comparisons with Islamist figures such as Rached Ghannouchi and Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlight the particularities of the Sudanese context and variations in the strategies and outcomes of political Islamist movements. This study deepens our understanding of the complex dynamics between political pragmatism and religious idealism in Muslim countries, with important implications for inclusive governance. Through a critical exploration of al-Turabi's legacy, this research contributes to discussions about the future of Islamic politics that accommodates diversity and protects the rights of marginalized groups

Sistem Pendidikan Sekolah Umum dan Madrasatul Qur'an di Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng Jombang

Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan model studi banding ke tiga lokasi di wilayah Jawa Timur, yakni SMA Islam Cokroaminoto di Madiun, Pondok Pesantren Modern Gotor di Ponorogo dan SMA Ta’miriyah di Surabaya dengan tujuan untuk lebih memantapkan wawasan atau program yang telah direncanakan baik oleh yayasan maupun Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan serta yang telah dijabarkan oleh pimpinan lama dan baru. lnstitut Agama Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel berdiri semenjak empat puluh tiga tahun yang lalu berdasarkan Surat keputusan Menteri Agama Nomor 20/1965 dan berlokasi di kawasan strategis, yaitu Jl. Jenderal A. Yani 117 Surabaya. Selama kurun waktu tersebut, IAIN Sunan Ampel telah banyak melakukan pengembangan institusi pendidikan tingginya pada lima (5) fakultas yang ada, yaitu Adab, Dakwah, Syariah, Tarbiyah dan Ushuludin serta program Pascasarjana. Selain itu, pengembangan dan peningkatan mutu juga dilakukan pada lembaga-lembaga dan unit penunjang yang ada di lingkungan IAIN Sunan Ampel. Pengembangan dan peningkatan mutu yang telah dilakukan berorientasi pada pengembangan mutu sumber daya manusia (SDM) perguruan tinggi serta sarana dan prasarana yang menunjang kegiatan pengembangan tersebut. Banyaknya dosen yang telah menempuh jenjang studi Magister dan Doktoral, serta terlebih lagi bertambahnya jumlah Guru Besar, adalah salah satu indikator bahwa pengembangan mutu SDM pengajar adalah menjadi prioritas utama. Hal itu juga seiring dengan menggeliatnya IAIN Sunan Ampel untuk memfasilitasi pelaksanaan Tri Dharma perguruan tinggi dengan pembangunan sarana dan prasarana dalam menjalankan kehidupan akademis di kampus. Pembangunan gedung-gedung penunjang perkuliahan, unit penunjang, perpustakaan, kelas multimedia, information technology, dan laboratorium computer, adalah indicator nyata dari capaian tersebut

The Islamic Values and Democratic Ideals Navigating the Intersection of Islam and Democracy

The debate about democracy and Islam has consistently been juxtaposed as if it never reaches a final resolution, leading to disharmony between pro and con camps in relation to democracy, especially in the contemporary era. This study elucidates that there is no need for a dichotomy between democracy and the discourse of the Quran, as the Quranic vision is not contradictory to the spirit of democracy. This research is conducted based on direct observation, taking into account empirical evidence from literature and phenomena occurring within society. The study concludes that such debate is not of paramount importance; rather, what is more urgent is fostering public participation capable of implementing democracy that aligns with the vision of the Quran and Islam at large, to prevent all forms of injustice, authoritarianism, intolerance, and oppression
