Surface morphology and magnetic anisotropy in (Ga,Mn)As
Atomic Force Microscopy and Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction measurements
have revealed the presence of ripples aligned along the direction
on the surface of (Ga,Mn)As layers grown on GaAs(001) substrates and buffer
layers, with periodicity of about 50 nm in all samples that have been studied.
These samples show the strong symmetry breaking uniaxial magnetic anisotropy
normally observed in such materials. We observe a clear correlation between the
amplitude of the surface ripples and the strength of the uniaxial magnetic
anisotropy component suggesting that these ripples might be the source of such

Myriocin Effect on Tvrm4 Retina, an Autosomal Dominant Pattern of Retinitis Pigmentosa
Tvrm4 mice, a model of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (RP), carry a mutation of Rhodopsin gene that can be activated by brief exposure to very intense light. Here, we test the possibility of an anatomical, metabolic, and functional recovery by delivering to degenerating Tvrm4 animals, Myriocin, an inhibitor of ceramide de novo synthesis previously shown to effectively slow down retinal degeneration in rd10 mutants (Strettoi et al., 2010; Piano et al., 2013). Different routes and durations of Myriocin administration were attempted by using either single intravitreal (i.v.) or long-term, repeated intraperitoneal (i.p.) injections. The retinal function of treated and control animals was tested by ERG recordings. Retinas from ERG-recorded animals were studied histologically to reveal the extent of photoreceptor death. A correlation was observed between Myriocin administration, lowering of retinal ceramides, and preservation of ERG responses in i.v. injected cases. Noticeably, the i.p. treatment with Myriocin decreased the extension of the retinal-degenerating area, preserved the ERG response, and correlated with decreased levels of biochemical indicators of retinal oxidative damage. The results obtained in this study confirm the efficacy of Myriocin in slowing down retinal degeneration in genetic models of RP independently of the underlying mutation responsible for the disease, likely targeting ceramide-dependent, downstream pathways. Alleviation of retinal oxidative stress upon Myriocin treatment suggests that this molecule, or yet unidentified metabolites, act on cellular detoxification systems supporting cell survival. Altogether, the pharmacological approach chosen here meets the necessary pre-requisites for translation into human therapy to slow down RP
Gamma-ray observations of Cygnus X-1 above 100 MeV in the hard and soft states
We present the results of multi-year gamma-ray observations by the AGILE
satellite of the black hole binary system Cygnus X-1. In a previous
investigation we focused on gamma-ray observations of Cygnus X-1 in the hard
state during the period mid-2007/2009. Here we present the results of the
gamma-ray monitoring of Cygnus X-1 during the period 2010/mid-2012 carried out
for which includes a remarkably prolonged `soft state' phase (June 2010 -- May
2011). Previous 1--10 MeV observations of Cyg X-1 in this state hinted at a
possible existence of a non-thermal particle component with substantial
modifications of the Comptonized emission from the inner accretion disk. Our
AGILE data, averaged over the mid-2010/mid-2011 soft state of Cygnus X-1,
provide a significant upper limit for gamma-ray emission above 100 MeV of
F_soft < 20 x 10^{-8} ph/cm^2/s, excluding the existence of prominent
non-thermal emission above 100 MeV during the soft state of Cygnus X-1. We
discuss theoretical implications of our findings in the context of high-energy
emission models of black hole accretion. We also discuss possible gamma-ray
flares detected by AGILE. In addition to a previously reported episode observed
by AGILE in October 2009 during the hard state, we report a weak but important
candidate for enhanced emission which occurred at the end of June 2010
(2010-06-30 10:00 - 2010-07-02 10:00 UT) exactly in coincidence with a
hard-to-soft state transition and before an anomalous radio flare. An appendix
summarizes all previous high-energy observations and possible detections of

Prevalence of IgG antibodies against Borrelia Burgdorferi s.l. and Ehrlichia Phagocytophila in sera of patients presenting symptoms of Lyme disease in a central region of Italy.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence (seroprevalence) of antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi and Ehrlichia phagocytophila among patients resident in Lazio, a region of central Italy. Of a sample of 1,050 patients, which presented clinical manifestations related to Lyme disease, 34 (3.2%) were Borrelia-seropositive (Lyme index value ≥ 1.2). The sera of 25 out of the 34 patients that were Borrelia-positive were also analysed for the presence of antibodies against E. phagocytophila and 3 (12%) were found Ehrlichia-positive (titres >1:64). No Ehrlichia-positive samples were found among sera of 250 Borrelia-negative patients. Since both B. burgdorferi s.l. and Ehrlichia species share the same tick vector ( Ixodes ricinus), our results indicate that concurrent transmission of these microbial pathogens might have been occurred among the patients included in this study

The pi -> pi pi process in nuclei and the restoration of chiral symmetry
The results of an extensive campaign of measurements of the pi -> pi pi
process in the nucleon and nuclei at intermediate energies are presented. The
measurements were motivated by the study of strong pi pi correlations in
nuclei. The analysis relies on the composite ratio C_{pi pi}^A, which accounts
for the clear effect of the nuclear medium on the (pi pi) system. The
comparison of the C_{pi pi}^A distributions for the (pi pi)_{I=J=0} and (pi
pi)_{I=0,J=2} systems to the model predictions indicates that the C_{pi pi}^A
behavior in proximity of the 2m_pi threshold is explainable through the partial
restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclei.Comment: accepted for publication in Nucl. Phys.
emission rates in absorptions at rest on Li, Li, Be, C and O
An experimental study of the reaction
on Li, Li, Be, C and O -shell nuclei is
presented. The data were collected by the FINUDA spectrometer operating at the
DANE -factory (LNF-INFN, Italy). Emission rates for the reaction in
the mentioned nuclei are measured and compared with the few existing data. The
spectra of several observables are discussed; indications of Quasi-Free
absorptions by a pair embedded in the nucleus can be obtained from
