    Cell Phone Information Seeking Explains Blood Pressure in African American Women

    Although cell phone use and Internet access via cell phone is not marked by racial disparities, little is known about how cell phone use relates to blood pressure and health information seeking behaviors. The purposes of this study were to (a) describe Internet activities, cell phone use, and information seeking; (b) determine differences in blood pressure and information seeking between cell phone information seekers and nonseekers; and (c) examine cell phone information seeking as a predictor of blood pressure in African American women. Participants ( N = 147) completed a survey and had their blood pressure measured. Independent-sample t tests showed a significant difference in systolic blood pressure in cell phone information seekers and nonseekers. Linear regression revealed cell phone information seeking as an independent predictor of systolic blood pressure, despite confounders. It is possible that cell phone information seekers were using health information to make decisions about self-management of blood pressure

    The DART-Europe project: towards developing a European theses portal

    This paper will report on the new European theses project DART-Europe. The purpose of this project is to align institutional and national e-theses developments across Europe with the wider open archives movement by the construction of a European portal for research theses, thus enabling a global view of European institutional research assets. This project is driven through an innovative partnership between an information provider and an international body of university libraries and open access consortia. The project’s goal is to explore the creation of a European model for the deposit, discovery, use and long-term care of research theses in an open access environment. The paper will outline the projected outcomes of DART-Europe, which is an active group of institutions in addition to a technical service. To this end, DART-Europe is engaged with disciplines and institutions that are widening the definition of research by redefining the formats of theses. For institutions and countries without a repository infrastructure, DART-Europe will enable the creation of a depository. Institutions and countries with a repository infrastructure can engage with DART-Europe to deliver their e-theses. DART-Europe acts as a technology bridge for researchers between those who have existing infrastructures and those who do not. The DART-Europe architecture assumes free at point of use access to full text theses, whether held on the DART-Europe server or by institutional repositories. This paper will provide session attendees with the current progress of this initiative, including a report on the 5 strands of the project, including: architecture; creation of a management tool kit; content acquisition; digital preservation and an investigation of business models

    Hispanic Stereotypes in Contemporary Film

    Stereotypes are present even in the most popular films. Groups of people are often misrepresented in a way that is entertaining, but not necessarily truthful, causing viewers to have a narrow, often incorrect, view of a particular culture or people. This research serves as an analysis of selected contemporary American films that feature a Hispanic character or cultural element. My aim is twofold: first, to shed light on the stereotypes surrounding Hispanics and the excessive appearance of these stereotypical representations in popular U.S. films, and second, to promote open-mindedness by educating others on the cultural diversity of Spanish speakers, especially those groups that are present in the United States

    Improving Access to European E-Theses: the DART-Europe Programme

    Session Abstract. Increasingly, institutions are seeking to automate their core business processes around research and teaching. Where such automation also offers the possibility of sharing material more widely via the web, managers need to plan an institutional response to this potential opportunity. Sharing material on the web that was previously only available in print, if at all, demands adequate planning in terms of the business case, the need for skills and training, changing roles and an appropriate legal framework, as well as organisational and technical changes. As institutions increasingly make doctoral theses available via participation in the Electronic Theses Online Service (EThOS1) and the DART-Europe E-theses Portal (DEEP2), managers are making very practical decisions on these questions. This session offers a chance to share these experiences from three distinct e-theses projects - DART-Europe, EThOS and Entry To EThOS - and learn from practice, both JISC-funded and otherwise

    Sleeve Gastrectomy Leads to Weight Loss in the Magel2 Knockout Mouse

    Background Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder characterized by hyperphagia, obesity, cardiopulmonary diseases, and increased mortality. Although successful weight loss improves health in PWS, few treatments cause sustained weight loss in obese patients let alone obese individuals with PWS. Objectives The present study uses the Magel2 knockout (KO) mouse, an animal model of PWS, to conduct a preclinical study on the efficacy of sleeve gastrectomy(SG) in PWS. Setting Academic research laboratory, United States. Methods We performed sham or SG surgeries in 24- to 28-week-old male Magel2 KO and wild-type littermate control mice (WT) who had been maintained on a high-fat diet for 10 weeks. We monitored weight, food intake, and fat and lean mass pre- and postoperatively. Fasting glucose, glucose tolerance, and counter-regulation were measured postoperatively. Results Magel2 KO animals had similar recovery and mortality rates compared with WT. SG resulted in similar weight loss, specifically loss of fat but not lean mass, in both Magel2 KO and WT mice. SG also resulted in significantly lower fasting glucose levels and a reduction in fat intake in both Magel2 KO and WT mice. We also found that Magel2 KO mice failed to increase their food intake in response to the glucoprivic agent 2-deoxy-D-glucose, suggesting impaired glucose counter-regulation, but this occurred regardless of surgical status. All results were considered significant when P\u3c .05. Conclusion We find in this mouse model of PWS, SG is a well-tolerated, effective strategy for weight and fat loss

    Dynamics of conduction blocks in a model of paced cardiac tissue

    We study numerically the dynamics of conduction blocks using a detailed electrophysiological model. We find that this dynamics depends critically on the size of the paced region. Small pacing regions lead to stationary conduction blocks while larger pacing regions can lead to conduction blocks that travel periodically towards the pacing region. We show that this size-dependence dynamics can lead to a novel arrhythmogenic mechanism. Furthermore, we show that the essential phenomena can be captured in a much simpler coupled-map model.Comment: 8 pages 6 figure

    Early serial EEG in hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy

    Objectives: To perform early serial EEGs in infants with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) and compare the findings with neurodevelopmental outcome.// Methods: Nine full-term neonates with HIE had simultaneous video-EEG polygraphic studies within 8 h of birth. The EEG was repeated at 12–24 h intervals. All surviving infants had a neurodevelopmental assessment at 1 year.// Results: Two infants had a normal or mildly abnormal EEG within 8 h of birth and neurodevelopmental outcome was normal. Seven infants had severely depressed background activity in the first 8 h of life. In 3 infants the EEG activity recovered within 12–24 h showing continuous activity with no or only minor abnormalities. All these infants had a normal outcome. The remaining 4 infants, who also had an initially inactive recording, subsequently developed severe background abnormalities. At follow-up, two infants had died and the remainder developed major neurological sequelae.// Conclusions: Early EEG is an excellent prognostic indicator for a favourable outcome if normal within the first 8 h of life and for a poor outcome if the background activity continues to be inactive or grossly abnormal beyond 8–12 h of life. However, an inactive or very depressed EEG within the first 8 h of life can be associated with good outcome if the EEG activity recovers within 12 h
