Damped Population Oscillation in a Spontaneously Decaying Two-Level Atom Coupled to a Monochromatic Field
We investigate the time evolution of atomic population in a two-level atom
driven by a monochromatic radiation field, taking spontaneous emission into
account. The Rabi oscillation exhibits amplitude damping in time caused by
spontaneous emission. We show that the semiclassical master equation leads in
general to an overestimation of the damping rate and that a correct
quantitative description of the damped Rabi oscillation can thus be obtained
only with a full quantum mechanical theory.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Common gauge origin of discrete symmetries in observable sector and hidden sector
An extra Abelian gauge symmetry is motivated in many new physics models in
both supersymmetric and nonsupersymmetric cases. Such a new gauge symmetry may
interact with both the observable sector and the hidden sector. We
systematically investigate the most general residual discrete symmetries in
both sectors from a common Abelian gauge symmetry. Those discrete symmetries
can ensure the stability of the proton and the dark matter candidate. A hidden
sector dark matter candidate (lightest U-parity particle or LUP) interacts with
the standard model fields through the gauge boson Z', which may selectively
couple to quarks or leptons only. We make a comment on the implications of the
discrete symmetry and the leptonically coupling dark matter candidate, which
has been highlighted recently due to the possibility of the simultaneous
explanation of the DAMA and the PAMELA results. We also show how to construct
the most general U(1) charges for a given discrete symmetry, and discuss the
relation between the U(1) gauge symmetry and R-parity.Comment: Version to appear in JHE
Prediction of force coefficients for labyrinth seals
The development of a linear model for the prediction of labyrinth seal forces and on its comparison to available stiffness data is presented. A discussion of the relevance of fluid damping forces and the preliminary stages of a program to obtain data on these forces are examined. Fluid-dynamic forces arising from nonuniform pressure patterns in labyrinth seal glands are known to be potentially destablizing in high power turbomachinery. A well documented case in point is that of the space Shuttle Main Engine turbopumps. Seal forces are also an important factor for the stability of shrouded turbines, acting in that case in conjunction with the effects of blade-tip clearance variations
Collective quantum jumps of Rydberg atoms
We study an open quantum system of atoms with long-range Rydberg interaction,
laser driving, and spontaneous emission. Over time, the system occasionally
jumps between a state of low Rydberg population and a state of high Rydberg
population. The jumps are inherently collective and in fact exist only for a
large number of atoms. We explain how entanglement and quantum measurement
enable the jumps, which are otherwise classically forbidden.Comment: 4 page
Possible effects of charge frustration in NaCoO: bandwidth suppression, charge orders and resurrected RVB superconductivity
Charge frustration due to further neighbor Coulomb repulsion can have
dramatic effects on the electronic properties of NaCoO in the full
doping range. It can significantly reduce the effective mobility of the charge
carriers, leading to a low degeneracy temperature . Such
strongly renormalized Fermi liquid has rather unusual properties--from the
point of view of the ordinary metals with --but similar to
the properties that are actually observed in the NaCoO system. For
example, we show that the anomalous thermopower and Hall effect observed in
NaCoO may be interpreted along these lines. If the repulsion is
strong, it can also lead to charge order; nevertheless, away from the
commensurate dopings, the configurational constraints allow some mobility for
the charge carriers, i.e., there remains some ``metallic'' component. Finally,
the particularly strong bandwidth suppression around the commensurate
can help resurrect the RVB superconductivity, which would otherwise not be
expected near this high doping. These suggestions are demonstrated specifically
for a -like model with an additional nearest neighbor repulsion.Comment: 15 pages, 17 figure
The Carboxyl-Terminal Segment of Apolipoprotein A-V Undergoes a Lipid-Induced Conformational Change
Apolipoprotein (apo) A-V is a 343-residue, multidomain protein that plays an important role in regulation of plasma triglyceride homeostasis. Primary sequence analysis revealed a unique tetraproline sequence (Pro293-Pro296) near the carboxyl terminus of the protein. A peptide corresponding to the 48-residue segment beyond the tetraproline motif was generated from a recombinant apoA-V precursor wherein Pro295 was replaced by Met. Cyanogen bromide cleavage of the precursor protein, followed by negative affinity chromatography, yielded a purified peptide. Nondenaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis verified that apoA-V(296-343) solubilizes phospholipid vesicles, forming a relatively heterogeneous population of reconstituted high-density lipoprotein with Stokes’ diameters\u3e17 nm. At the same time, apoA-V(296-343) failed to bind a spherical lipoprotein substrate in vitro. Far-UV circular dichroism spectroscopy revealed the peptide is unstructured in buffer yet adopts significant R-helical secondary structure in the presence of the lipid mimetic solvent trifluoroethanol (TFE; 50% v/v). Heteronuclear multidemensional NMR spectroscopy experiments were conducted with uniformly 15N- and 15N/13C-labeled peptide in 50% TFE. Peptide backbone assignment and secondary structure prediction using TALOSþ reveal the peptide adopts R-helix secondary structure from residues 309 to 334. In TFE, apoA-V(296-343) adopts an extended amphipathic R-helix, consistent with a role in lipoprotein binding as a component of full-length apoA-V
Momentum modes of M5-branes in a 2d space
We study M5 branes by considering the selfdual strings parallel to a plane.
With the internal oscillation frozen, each selfdual string gives a 5d SYM
field. All selfdual strings together give a 6d field with 5 scalars, 3 gauge
degrees of freedom and 8 fermionic degrees of freedom in adjoint representation
of U(N). Selfdual strings with the same orientation have the SYM-type
interaction. For selfdual strings with the different orientations, which could
also be taken as the unparallel momentum modes of the 6d field on that plane or
the (p,q) (r,s) strings on D3 with (p,q)\neq (r,s), the [i,j]+[j,k]\rightarrow
[i,k] relation is not valid, so the coupling cannot be written in terms of the
standard N \times N matrix multiplication. 3-string junction, which is the
bound state of the unparallel [i,j] [j,k] selfdual strings, may play a role
here.Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures, to appear in JHEP; v2: reference adde
Spin Correlations in the Two-Dimensional Spin-5/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet Rb2MnF4
We report a neutron scattering study of the instantaneous spin correlations
in the two-dimensional spin S=5/2 square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet
Rb_2MnF_4. The measured correlation lengths are quantitatively described, with
no adjustable parameters, by high-temperature series expansion results and by a
theory based on the quantum self-consistent harmonic approximation. Conversely,
we find that the data, which cover the range from about 1 to 50 lattice
constants, are outside of the regime corresponding to renormalized classical
behavior of the quantum non-linear sigma model. In addition, we observe a
crossover from Heisenberg to Ising critical behavior near the Neel temperature;
this crossover is well described by a mean-field model with no adjustable
parameters.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, with 6 included EPS figures, submitted to EPJ
Inflationary Hubble Parameter from the Gravitational Wave Spectrum in the General Slow-roll Approximation
Improved general slow-roll formulae giving the primordial gravitational wave
spectrum are derived in the present work. Also the first and second order
general slow-roll inverse formulae giving the Hubble parameter in terms of
the gravitational wave spectrum are derived. Moreover, the general slow-roll
consistency condition relating the scalar and tensor spectra is obtained
An exactly solvable limit of low energy QCD
Starting from the QCD Hamiltonian, we derive a schematic Hamiltonian for low
energy quark dynamics with quarks restricted to the lowest s-level. The
resulting eigenvalue problem can be solved analytically. Even though the
Hamiltonian exhibits explicit chiral symmetry the severe restriction of the
number of degrees of freedom breaks the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking for
finite quark masses.Comment: 7 page
