    Robust Object-Based Watermarking Using SURF Feature Matching and DFT Domain

    In this paper we propose a robust object-based watermarking method, in which the watermark is embedded into the middle frequencies band of the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) magnitude of the selected object region, altogether with the Speeded Up Robust Feature (SURF) algorithm to allow the correct watermark detection, even if the watermarked image has been distorted. To recognize the selected object region after geometric distortions, during the embedding process the SURF features are estimated and stored in advance to be used during the detection process. In the detection stage, the SURF features of the distorted image are estimated and match them with the stored ones. From the matching result, SURF features are used to compute the Affine-transformation parameters and the object region is recovered. The quality of the watermarked image is measured using the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) and the Visual Information Fidelity (VIF). The experimental results show the proposed method provides robustness against several geometric distortions, signal processing operations and combined distortions. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves also show the desirable detection performance of the proposed method. The comparison with a previously reported methods based on different techniques is also provided

    Temporal and spatial variations in hydrothermal fluid abundances of degassing metals across an eruptive cycle at 9 degrees 50 minutes N East Pacific Rise

    The influence of eruptive activity on hydrothermal fluid trace metal abundances, especially those inferred to degas from shallow mid ocean ridge (MOR) magma bodies, remains poorly understood. These data and their variations in time and space are critical to improving our understanding of the quantitative links between mantle, crust, and MOR biological communities. Frequent sampling of hydrothermal vents at the 9°50\u27N East Pacific Rise provides an ideal suite for evaluating the evolution of vent fluid chemistry during eruption cycles. Fluid metal abundances are presented for metals with high degassing potential (210Pb, Pb and Cd) for a subset of these time-series samples. These results are then considered with chloride, silica, magmatic volatile and more refractory metal contents. Taken together, vapor-phase vents with the highest degassing signal as indicated by volatile contents contain elevated 210Pb/Pb. Additionally, high levels of CO2 are associated with increasing concentrations of Cd as well as 210Pb

    In this paper we present a robust-encoded watermarking method applied to color images for copyright protection, which presents robustness against several geometric and signal processing distortions. Trade-off between payload, robustness and imperceptibility is a very important aspect which has to be considered when a watermark algorithm is designed. In our proposed scheme, previously to be embedded into the image, the watermark signal is encoded using a convolutional encoder, which can perform forward error correction achieving better robustness performance. Then, the embedding process is carried out through the discrete cosine transform domain (DCT) of an image using the image normalization technique to accomplish robustness against geometric and signal processing distortions. The embedded watermark coded bits are extracted and decoded using the Viterbi algorithm. In order to determine the presence or absence of the watermark into the image we compute the bit error rate (BER) between the recovered and the original watermark data sequence. The quality of the watermarked image is measured using the well-known indices: Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), Visual Information Fidelity (VIF) and Structural Similarity Index (SSIM). The color difference between the watermarked and original images is obtained by using the Normalized Color Difference (NCD) measure. The experimental results show that the proposed method provides good performance in terms of imperceptibility and robustness. The comparison among the proposed and previously reported methods based on different techniques is also provided

    Patient preference for the management of mildly abnormal Papanicolau smears

    The article provides information on a study that investigated management preference and desire for decision-making involvement in women who have received a first mildly abnormal Papanicolaou smear. The majority of women in this highly educated sample preferred active management of their mildly abnormal Pap smears, although a substantial minority either opted for the surveillance strategy or reported no strong preference. Furthermore, management preference in this sample was not related to knowledge but rather to level of state anxiety. This indicates that these decisions may be guided more by emotions than by facts. Research has shown repeatedly that abnormal Pap smears are associated with a significant amount of anxiety. It could be that fear of invasive carcinoma weighs in heavily on the side of the active management strategy, despite knowledge of its being a low probability event. As gynecologists continue to evaluate the comparative medical efficacy of different strategies in the management of low-grade cervical abnormalities. It seems important that patient preference and psychosocial factors affecting preference be integrated into the evaluation process and incorporated into clinical practice

    Physician-related determinants of cervical cancer screening among Caribbean women in Toronto

    BACKGROUND: Minority women in Canada are less likely to be screened for cervical cancer than their counterparts in the general population, despite the fact that the proportion of these women who consult a general practitioner about their health each year is similar to minority women. This study examined the physician and practice characteristics associated with Pap testing and perceived barriers to Pap testing of family physicians serving the Caribbean community of Toronto. METHODS: A mail-back questionnaire was sent to Toronto family physicians practicing in neighborhoods with a high proportion of Caribbean Canadians. RESULTS: Although 79.7% of the 64 participating physicians reported that they were \u27very likely to include Pap testing during an annual check-up, nearly half did not believe that the majority of Caribbean patients were actually screened. The amount of time a physician spent on patient education was significantly associated with his/her likelihood of screening. Male physicians who reported a high proportion of Caribbean female patients in their practices were significantly less likely to screen for cervical cancer than those who saw fewer Caribbean patients. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that an increased emphasis on patient education is important to increase screening practice and that physician gender may be of major importance to the Caribbean community

    We discuss the ten dimensional black holes made of D0-branes in the regime where the effective coupling is large, and yet the 11D geometry is unimportant. We suggest that these black holes can be interpreted as excitations over the threshold bound state. Thus, the entropy formula for the former is used to predict a scaling region of the wave function of the latter.     IMproving Preclinical Assessment of Cardioprotective Therapies (IMPACT) criteria: guidelines of the EU-CARDIOPROTECTION COST Action

As such, new therapeutic interventions are still needed to protect the heart against acute ischemia/reperfusion injury to reduce myocardial infarct size and prevent the onset of HF in patients presenting with AMI. However, the clinical translation of cardioprotective interventions that have proven to be beneficial in preclinical animal studies, has been challenging. One likely major reason for this failure to translate cardioprotection into patient benefit is the lack of rigorous and systematic in vivo preclinical assessment of the efficacy of promising cardioprotective interventions prior to their clinical evaluation. To address this, we propose an in vivo set of step-by-step criteria for IMproving Preclinical Assessment of Cardioprotective Therapies (‘IMPACT’), for investigators to consider adopting before embarking on clinical studies, the aim of which is to improve the likelihood of translating novel cardioprotective interventions into the clinical setting for patient benefit.This article is based on the work from COST Action EU-CARDIOPROTECTION CA16225 supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology).
