    The Impact of Earnings Disregards on the Behavior of Low Income Families

    This paper investigates the impact of changes in earnings disregards for welfare assistance received by single mothers following welfare reform in 1996. Some states adopted much higher earnings disregards (women could work full time and still receive welfare), while other states did not. We explore the effect of these changes on women's labor supply and income using several data sources and multiple estimation strategies. Our results indicate these changes had little effect on labor supply or income. We show this is because few women used these earnings disregards. This is surprising and we discuss why this might occur.

    Meissner effect in honeycomb arrays of multi-walled carbon nanotubes

    We report Meissner effect for type-II superconductors with a maximum Tc of 19 K, which is the highest value among those in new-carbon related superconductors, found in the honeycomb arrays of multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs). Drastic reduction of ferromagnetic catalyst and efficient growth of MWNTs by deoxidization of catalyst make the finding possible. The weak magnetic anisotropy, superconductive coherence length (- 7 nm), and disappearance of the Meissner effect after dissolving array structure indicate that the graphite structure of an MWNT and those intertube coupling in the honeycomb array are dominant factors for the mechanism.Comment: 6 page

    Comparison of woolen eco-friendly anti-felting treatment with classic anti-felting procedures

    The development of an eco-friendly anti-felting treatment based on a calcium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide (Ca(ClO)2 + H2O2) system, the so-called MEFT (Mori Eco-friendly Treatment) process, is reported in this paper. This treatment is not new in the processing of wool; however, controlling the temperature and time gives rise to further effectiveness of the system, resulting in excellent anti-felting property, fabric handle, color intensity and whiteness. The relationship of the anti-felting and scale structure of Merino and Corriedale wool fabrics treated with the present system is discussed. Although the anti-felting effect was slightly lower than that of the chlorination treatment based on dichloroisocyanuric acid and NARS (improved new method of the Agricultural Research Service) treatment, the excellent handle characteristics of wool fabrics were retained. The anti-felting property, based on various other oxidative and non-oxidative treatments, was compared and the rank was obtained approximately in the following order: chlorination > NARS = MEFT > plasma > Caroat. © The Author(s) 2013 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/journalsPermissions.nav

    Magnetic properties of exactly solvable doubly decorated Ising-Heisenberg planar models

    Applying the decoration-iteration procedure, we introduce a class of exactly solvable doubly decorated planar models consisting both of the Ising- and Heisenberg-type atoms. Exact solutions for the ground state, phase diagrams and basic physical quantities are derived and discussed. The detailed analysis of the relevant quantities suggests the existence of an interesting quantum antiferromagnetic phase in the system.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Physical Review

    Synthetic biology: Building the language for a new science brick by metaphorical brick

    Changes in the biosciences and their relations to society over the last decades provide a unique opportunity to examine whether or not such changes leave traces in the language we use to talk about them. In this article we examine metaphors used in English-speaking press coverage to conceptualize a new type of (interdisciplinary) bioscience: synthetic biology. Findings show that three central metaphors were used between 2008 and May 2010. They exploit social and cultural knowledge about books, computers and engines and are linked to knowledge of three revolutions in science and society (the printing, information and industrial revolutions). These three central metaphors are connected to each other through the concepts of reading/writing, designing and mass production and they focus on science as a revolutionary process rather than on the end results or products of science. Overall, we observed the use of a complex bricolage of mixed metaphors and chains of metaphors that root synthetic biology in historical events and achievements, while at the same time extolling its promises for the future. © 2011 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

    The actin-bundling protein fascin is overexpressed in colorectal adenomas and promotes motility in adenoma cells in vitro

    Background: Fascin is overexpressed in many cancers, including colorectal, but its role in the malignant transformation of benign colorectal adenomas is unclear. Methods: Immunohistochemical analysis of fascin expression was carried out in resected human colorectal adenoma specimens. The effects of forced overexpression of fascin on adenoma cell motility were also analysed. Results: We show fascin overexpression in adenomas increasing with tumour size, histological type, and degree of dysplasia and increased cell motility in adenoma cell lines following fascin transfection. Conclusion: These data suggest an important role for fascin in the malignant progression of colorectal tumours
