Is life a thermal horizon ?
This talk aims at questioning the vanishing of Unruh temperature for an
inertial observer in Minkovski spacetime with finite lifetime, arguing that in
the non eternal case the existence of a causal horizon is not linked to the
non-vanishing of the acceleration. This is illustrated by a previous result,
the diamonds temperature, that adapts the algebraic approach of Unruh effect to
the finite case.Comment: Proceedings of the conference DICE 2006, Piombino september 200
Line element in quantum gravity: the examples of DSR and noncommutative geometry
We question the notion of line element in some quantum spaces that are
expected to play a role in quantum gravity, namely non-commutative deformations
of Minkowski spaces. We recall how the implementation of the Leibniz rule
forbids to see some of the infinitesimal deformed Poincare transformations as
good candidates for Noether symmetries. Then we recall the more fundamental
view on the line element proposed in noncommutative geometry, and re-interprete
at this light some previous results on Connes' distance formula.Comment: some references added. Proceedings of the Second Workshop on Quantum

Information, formation and training for the maintenance operations: the lesson learned from fatal accidents
The list of possible machinery / equipment-related injuries is as long as it is worrying; they represent a non-negligible part of the total accidents in most industrial sectors, in terms of both numbers and severity, in normal conditions and during the maintenance operations.
Lack of maintenance or inadequate maintenance can lead to dangerous situations, accidents and health problems; but, at the same time, maintenance itself is a high-risk activity due to special hazards resulting from the particular nature of the work. Moreover, the workers involved are more likely than other employees directly exposed to the risks, since direct contact between the worker and the machinery to be maintained cannot be substantially reduced
Frequency of the New HLA-B*2709 Allele in Ankylosing Spondylitis Patients and Healthy Individuals
We have recently described a new HLA-B27 subtype, named HLA-B*2709 (Del Porto et al. 1994). This allele is identical to the subtype most frequently found in Caucasoids, HLA-B*2705, except for a single amino acid substitution (Asp to His) in position 116. This residue, that is part of the F pocket of the molecule, has been shown to be relevant in determining which C-terminal amino acid of HLA-class I-binding peptides can be accomodated into the groove (Elliott, 1993). In nonamer peptides, this aminoacid corresponds to a primary anchor position (P9; Madden et al., 1992). Accordingly, we have previously shown that B2709 molecule hardly accepts nonamer peptides with an Arg or Tyr in P9, while the same amino acids represent good anchors for B2705 molecules (Fiorillo et al., 1995). Special attention is focused on HLA-B27 subtypes because of the strong association of B27 with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). More than 90% of AS patients are B27-positive and, conversely, about 4% of B27-positive individuals in the population are affected. This represents a relative risk over 100, that is the highest in HLA-disease associations. However, little is known on the pathogenic mechanisms of the disease. Following the hypothesis that an antigenic B27-binding peptide is involved in the disease (the so-called arthritogenic peptide), differential association with the different B27 subtypes may give a clue on the nature of such peptide. If two subtypes of partially overlapping peptide binding specificity are found to be both AS-associated, this would restrict the search for peptides that can be bound by both allelic products. Conversely, if a B27 subtype is found to be non AS-associated, this would be even more helpful in eliminating an array of peptides as possible candidates
Aspirin and the risk of colorectal and other digestive tract cancers: an updated meta-analysis through 2019
Aspirin has been associated with a reduced risk of colorectal cancer, and possibly of a few other digestive tract cancers. The quantification of risk reduction and the optimal dose and duration of aspirin use for the prevention of colorectal and other digestive tract cancers remains unclear
A Prevention through Design Approach for the Environmental S&H Conditions and the Ventilation System at an Italian Underground Quarry
Even if the number of the Italian quarrying operations in underground is steadily growing, in many cases the safety criticalities are somehow underestimated, in spite of the regulations D.Lgs. 81/08 and D.Lgs. 624/96, Italian enforcements of the European Directives.
Ventilation system is conceived to face very simplified requirements, whilst critical pollutants or emergency situations are not taken in due considerations. Asides, the ventilation system fault and availability analysis is seldom included in the project.
The paper deals with the results of a research work started some years ago at an underground quarry exploited through drift sublevel based on drill and blast technique, to identify criteria suitable to grant effective safety and health -S&H- conditions for the workers operating in the underground in the Prevention through Design approach.
Taken into account that the phases for an effective approach to the S&H problems in underground must follow a hierarchic method in which the risk management should be faced from an effective hazard reduction to a minimum at the sources, and the ventilation should be considered only as a 4th level
solution, the possibilities of control at the main pollution sources, i.e. the emission of pollutants due to the rock winning and mucking operations, have been examined.
The residual risk was then faced with both the original underground and airways layout definition for a new exploitation development, based on technical and efficiency considerations, and on fire emergency computer simulations.
Finally, the paper summarizes the results of an availability analysis of the ventilation system for the normal operating conditions and the emergencies management, on the basis of the results of Hazard Evaluation techniques, in particular Hazard and Operability Analysis and Fault Tree Analysis
mycosis fungoides in childhood description and study of two siblings
Primary cutaneous T-cell lymphomas are exceedingly rare in children and adolescents. However, mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most frequent primary cutaneous lymphoma diagnosed in childhood. Two cases of MF in siblings (a 14-year-old boy and his 10-year-old sister) are reported. On the basis of clinical features (histopathological and immunophenotypical findings) a diagnosis of MF patch lesions was made in both siblings. Since recent data in the literature have underlined a high frequency of the HLA-DQB1*03 allele in patients with familial MF (including child patients), the HLA profile of the patients was analysed, indicating the presence of a haplotype (HLA-DQB1*03,*03 in the girl, HLA-DQB1*02,*03 in the boy) corresponding with that described in recent literature. Two rare and exceptional cases of MF in siblings are reported, highlighting the presence of a peculiar haplotype
Intramolecular Friedel-Crafts Addition of Indoles to Tertiary Allylic Alcohols
An intermolecular Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indole and tertiary allylic alcohols has been developed. The allylic alcohols were synthesized using a two-step procedure, then exposure of these alcohols to diphenyl phosphate facilitated the desired annulation reaction. This reaction tolerated a variety of indole substitutions to yield 1H,2H,3H,4H-pyrido[1,2-a]indoles
Minimal length in quantum space and integrations of the line element in Noncommutative Geometry
We question the emergence of a minimal length in quantum spacetime, comparing
two notions that appeared at various points in the literature: on the one side,
the quantum length as the spectrum of an operator L in the Doplicher
Fredenhagen Roberts (DFR) quantum spacetime, as well as in the canonical
noncommutative spacetime; on the other side, Connes' spectral distance in
noncommutative geometry. Although on the Euclidean space the two notions merge
into the one of geodesic distance, they yield distinct results in the
noncommutative framework. In particular on the Moyal plane, the quantum length
is bounded above from zero while the spectral distance can take any real
positive value, including infinity. We show how to solve this discrepancy by
doubling the spectral triple. This leads us to introduce a modified quantum
length d'_L, which coincides exactly with the spectral distance d_D on the set
of states of optimal localization. On the set of eigenstates of the quantum
harmonic oscillator - together with their translations - d'_L and d_D coincide
asymptotically, both in the high energy and large translation limits. At small
energy, we interpret the discrepancy between d'_L and d_D as two distinct ways
of integrating the line element on a quantum space. This leads us to propose an
equation for a geodesic on the Moyal plane.Comment: 29 pages, 2 figures. Minor corrections to match the published versio
