    Visual query tools for uncertain data in space and time

    Includes bibliographical references.The aim of our project was to develop query and visualisation tools for this archive of African art. Our query system had to be designed to cope with different degrees of uncertainty in data, both in time and space. One of our initial ideas was to use a geographic map to drive the interface to the system. Items were plotted as a point on the map at some random location which fell within the given location of uncertainty for the item. However, user feedback indicated that this approach was problematic, as users assumed that the point on the map was the actual location of the artwork. A better approach was found in driving the interface around a time-line metaphor

    Introducing problem-based learning (PBL) into a foundation programme to develop self-directed learning skills

    This article reports on the qualitative aspects of a study that examined whether introducing a Problem-based Learning (PBL) approach in a one-year foundation programme can create conditions for learners to develop and sustain self-directed learning skills. This interpretiveconstructivist case study was located in evaluation research. Data were collected by means of classroom observations and interviews with 35 students and 14 former students. Findings indicated that introducing students to a PBL approach did promote more meaningful learning patterns, typified by processing the subject matter critically and self-regulating learning processes. The sustainability of the meaning-directed learning skills was questionable if student beliefs in the approach did not support the activities employed.     Progression of cardiovascular risk factors in black Africans: 3 year follow up of the SABPA cohort study

    Recent work identified a high prevalence of modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) among urban black South Africans. The aim was to track the progression of CVD risk factors in a multi-ethnic sample of South Africans. Participants were 173 black (aged 47.5 ± 7.8 yrs) and 186 white teachers (aged 49.6 ± 9.9 yrs) that were examined at baseline and 3 years follow-up. Blacks demonstrated a substantially higher prevalence of composite CVD burden (defined as history of physician diagnosed heart disease, use of anti-hypertensives, anti-diabetic, or statin medications at either time point) compared to whites (49.1 vs. 32.0%, p= 0.012) respectively. After controlling for baseline, the black participants demonstrated greater increases in 24 hr systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, fasting glucose, fibrinogen, D-dimer, and waist circumference in comparison with whites. In summary, an adverse progression of CVD risk factors was observed in the whole sample, although to a larger degree in black participants. Aggressive treatment strategies for controlling risk factors in black Africans are needed to reduce the increasing burden of CVD in South Africa

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan pengaruh model pembelajaran picture and picture terhadap kemampuan menulis puisi. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas VII SMP Swasta Istiqlal Delitua tahun pembelajaran 2014/2015. Untuk penelitian tersebut diambil kelas VII-1 yang berjumlah 30 siswa. Sampel diambil dari pupulasi yang terdiri dari 4 kelas. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan penarikan sampel secara purposive sampling. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode eksperimen dengan design one group pre-test and post-test. Dalam penelitian ini, kelas eksperimen diberi tes kemampuan menulis puisi sebelum dan sesudah menggunakan model picture and picture. Dari distribusi data yang diperoleh: 1) kelompok pre-test memiliki rata-rata 60,3 dengan standar deviasi 9.17; dan 2) kelompok post-test memiliki rata-rata 77.6 dengan standar deviasi sebesar 6.79. Hasil perhitungan uji normalitas pre-test memperoleh harga Lhitung Ttabel, yaitu 10,13 > 2,045, maka hipotesis nihil (H0) ditolak dan hipotesis alternative (Ha) diterima. Berdasarkan pengujian hipotesis di atas, dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan ada pengaruh dalam menggunakan model pembelajaran picture and picture terhadap kemampuan menulis puisi siswa kelas VII SMP Swasta Istiqlal Delitua Tahun Pembelajaran 2014/2015

    Single-dose benzathine penicillin in infants at risk of congenital syphilis : results of a randomised study

    OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of single-dose benzathine penicillin G in infants at high risk of congenital syphilis. DESIGN: Randomised study comparing benzathine penicillin with no therapy. SETTING: Peninsula Maternal and Neonatal Service, Cape Town. SUBJECTS: Asymptomatic infants born to mothers with untreated syphilis whose VDRL titre was 32 or more. OUTCOME MEASURES: The number of cases of congenital syphilis was determined by results of IgM Western blots and follow-up VDRL titres. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Of 8 patients followed up in the non-treatment group, 4 had congenital syphilis while 0/11 had the disease (P = 0.035) in the group receiving benzathine penicillin. Although the exact failure rate is unknown, benzathine penicillin is effective in preventing symptomatic congenital syphilis when administered to high-risk newborns
