Unstitching Scarlet Letters?: Prosecutorial Discretion and Expungement
This Article argues that scholarly discussions about prosecutorial discretion need to extend their focus beyond the exercise of prosecutorial judgment pretrial or questions of factual and legal guilt. Given that the primary role of the prosecutoris to do âjustice,â this Article calls for increased attention to the exercise of discretion after the guilt phase is complete, specifically in the context of expungement of nonconviction andconviction information. It offers a framework for exercising such discretion and, in doing so, hopes to initiate additional conversation about the role of prosecutors during the phases that follow arrest and prosecution
Nilpotent Bases for a Class of Non-Integrable Distributions with Applications to Trajectory Generation for Nonholonomic Systems
This paper develops a constructive method for finding a nilpotent basis for a special class of smooth nonholonomic distributions. The main tool is the use of the Goursat normal form theorem which arises in the study of exterior differential systems. The results are applied to the problem of finding a set of nilpotent input vector fields for a nonholonomic control system, which can then used to construct explicit trajectories to drive the system between any two points. A kinematic model of a rolling penny is used to illustrate this approach. The methods presented here extend previous work using "chained form" and cast that work into a coordinate-free setting
Quantitative Performance Bounds in Biomolecular Circuits due to Temperature Uncertainty
Performance of biomolecular circuits is affected by changes in temperature, due to its influence on underlying reaction rate parameters. While these performance variations have been estimated using Monte Carlo simulations, how to analytically bound them is generally unclear. To address this, we apply control-theoretic representations of uncertainty to examples of different biomolecular circuits, developing a framework to represent uncertainty due to temperature. We estimate bounds on the steady-state performance of these circuits due to temperature uncertainty. Through an analysis of the linearised dynamics, we represent this uncertainty as a feedback uncertainty and bound the variation in the magnitude of the input-output transfer function, providing a estimate of the variation in frequency-domain properties. Finally, we bound the variation in the time trajectories, providing an estimate of variation in time-domain properties. These results should enable a framework for analytical characterisation of uncertainty in biomolecular circuit performance due to temperature variation and may help in estimating relative performance of different controllers
Conversion and verification procedure for goal-based control programs
Fault tolerance and safety verification of control systems are essential for the success of autonomous robotic systems. A control architecture called Mission Data System, developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, takes a goal-based control approach. In this paper, a method for converting goal network control programs into linear hybrid systems is developed. The linear hybrid system can then be verified for safety in the presence of failures using existing symbolic model checkers. An example task is developed and successfully verified using HyTech, a symbolic model checking software for linear hybrid systems
Isolated Vortex and Vortex Lattice in a Holographic p-wave Superconductor
Using the holographic gauge-gravity duality, we find a solution for an
isolated vortex and a vortex lattice in a 2+1 dimensional p-wave
superconductor, which is described by the boundary theory dual to an SU(2)
gauge theory in 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Both and
components of the superconducting order parameter, as well as the
effects of a magnetic field on these components, are considered. The isolated
vortex solution is studied, and it is found that the two order parameter
components have different amplitudes due to the time reversal symmetry
breaking. The vortex lattice for large magnetic fields is also studied, where
it is argued that only one order parameter component will be nonzero
sufficiently close to the upper critical field. The upper critical field
exhibits a characteristic upward curvature, reflecting the effects of
field-induced correlations captured by the holographic theory. The free energy
is calculated perturbatively in this region of the phase diagram, and it is
shown that the triangular vortex lattice is the thermodynamically preferred

Contextualising over-engagement in work: towards a more global understanding of workaholism as an addiction
Purpose:
Despite increasing empirical research into workaholism, no single definition or conceptualisation has emerged, and current understandings of workaholism are arguably problematic. The primary purpose of this paper is to clarify some of these issues, by defining and contextualising over-engagement in work that leads to severe negative consequences (i.e., workaholism) as a genuine behavioural addiction.
Approach:
By conceptualising work behaviours as manifestations of behavioural engagement and placing them on a continuum from withdrawal/under-engagement (e.g., persistent absenteeism) to over-engagement (e.g., work conflicting with all other activity), this paper argues that workaholism is an extreme negative aspect of behavioural engagement. It then examines the extent to which workaholism can be viewed as a genuine addiction by using criteria applied to other more traditional behavioural addictions (e.g., gambling addiction, exercise addiction), before briefly outlining an approach towards a more global understanding of workaholism.
Findings:
The framework presented here helps to contextualise over-engagement to work as a genuine addiction. It presents more comprehensive understanding of workaholism that takes into account the individual factors of the employee, situational factors of the working environment, and structural factors of the work activity itself. It provides theoretically derived links between workaholism and other work behaviours that can be empirically demonstrated. Practical implications: Viewing workaholism as an addiction that comprises extreme and prolonged behavioural over-engagement can be invaluable for promoting healthy work engagement. A clearer understanding of the underpinnings of workaholism can allow for a better assessment and management by practitioners.
Originality/value:
This paper is one the first to contextualise workaholism in relation to other work behaviours, conceptualise it as a genuine behavioural addiction, and to apply clinical criteria for addiction to under- stand workaholism as prolonged and extreme behavioural engagement
Optimising workplace interventions for health and wellbeing: a commentary on the limitations of the public health perspective within the workplace health arena [forthcoming]
Purpose: This paper discusses contemporary approaches to workplace health and well-being, articulating key differences in the intervention architecture between public and workplace health contexts and implications for intervention design. Approach: Contemporary practice is discussed in light of calls for a paradigm shift in occupational health from a treatment orientation to an holistic approach focused on mitigation of the causes of ill health and the promotion of well-being. In practice, relatively few organizations have or seem able to engage with a broader perspective that encompasses challenges to health and well-being associated with contextual organizational drivers, e.g. job design/role, workload, systems of reward, leadership style and the underpinning climate. Drawing upon insights from public health and the workplace safety tradition, the scope for broadening the perspective on intervention (in terms of vectors of harm addressed, theory of change and intervention logic) is discussed. Findings: There are important differences in scope and options for intervention between public health and workplace health contexts. While there is scope to emulate public health practice, this should not constrain thinking over intervention opinions. Increased awareness of these key differences within work organizations, and an evidence-based epidemiological approach to learning has the potential to strengthen and broaden the approach to workplace health and well-being management. Originality/Value: We argue that approaches to workplace well-being interventions that selectively cross-fertilise and adapt elements of public health interventions offer promise for realising a broader change agenda and for building inherently healthy workplaces
