Neutralino Dark Matter Elastic Scattering in a Flat and Accelerating Universe

    Get PDF
In SUGRA inspired supersymmetric models with universal boundary conditions for the soft masses, the scalar cross section σscalar\sigma_{scalar} for the elastic neutralino--nucleon scattering is in general several orders of magnitude below the sensitivity of current experiments. For large tan⁥ÎČ\tan \beta and low M1/2,m0M_{1/2}, m_0 values, the theoretically predicted σscalar\sigma_{scalar} can approach the sensitivity of these experiments (≈10−6pb\approx 10^{-6} pb) being at the same time in agreement with recent cosmological data, which impose severe restrictions on the CDM relic density, and with accelerator experiments which put lower bounds on sparticle and Higgs boson masses. Further improvement of the sensitivity of DAMA and CDMS experiments will probe the large tan⁥ÎČ\tan \beta region of the parameter space in the vicinity of the boundaries of the parameter space allowed by chargino and Higgs searches.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. A Note On R-Parity Violation and Fermion Masses

We consider a class of supersymmetric SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1) multihiggs models in which R-parity is violated through bilinear Higgs-lepton interactions. The required, due to R-parity violation, higgs-lepton rotations introduce an alternative way to generate the phenomenologically desirable fermion mass matrix structures independently of the equality of Yukawas, possibly imposed by superstring or other unification.Comment: 8 pages, uses LaTeX2

Partial wave treatment of Supersymmetric Dark Matter in the presence of CP - violation

    Get PDF
We present an improved partial wave analysis of the dominant LSP annihilation channel to a fermion-antifermion pair which avoids the non-relativistic expansion being therefore applicable near thresholds and poles. The method we develop allows of contributions of any partial wave in the total angular momentum J in contrast to partial wave analyses in terms of the orbital angular momentum L of the initial state, which is usually truncated to p-waves, and yields very accurate results. The method is formulated in such a way as to allow easy handling of CP-violating phases residing in supersymmetric parameters. We apply this refined partial wave technique in order to calculate the neutralino relic density in the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) in the presence of CP-violating terms occurring in the Higgs - mixing parameter \mu and trilinear A coupling for large tanb. The inclusion of CP-violating phases in mu and A does not upset significantly the picture and the annihilation of the LSP's to a b b_bar, through Higgs exchange, is still the dominant mechanism in obtaining cosmologically acceptable neutralino relic densities in regions far from the stau-coannihilation and the `focus point'. Significant changes can occur if we allow for phases in the gaugino masses and in particular the gluino mass.Comment: 23 pages LaTeX, 10 eps figures, version to appear in PR

Refining the predictions of supersymmetric CP-violating models: A top-down approach

We explore in detail the consequences of the CP-violating phases residing in the supersymmetric and soft SUSY breaking parameters in the approximation that family flavour mixings are ignored. We allow for non-universal boundary conditions and in such a consideration the model is described by twelve independent CP-violating phases and one angle which misaligns the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the Higgs scalars. We run two-loop renormalization group equations (RGEs), for all parameters involved, including phases, and we properly treat the minimization conditions using the one-loop effective potential with CP-violating phases included. We show that the two-loop running of phases may induce sizable effects for the electric dipole moments (EDMs) that are absent in the one-loop RGE analysis. Also important corrections to the EDMs are induced by the Higgs VEVs misalignment angle which are sizable in the large tanb region. Scanning the available parameter space we seek regions compatible with accelerator and cosmological data with emphasis on rapid neutralino annihilations through a Higgs resonance. It is shown that large CP-violating phases, as required in Baryogenesis scenarios, can be tuned to obtain agreement with WMAP3 cold dark matter constraints, EDMs and all available accelerator data, in extended regions of the parameter space which may be accessible to LHC.Comment: 41 pages, 22 eps figures. Gluino Condensation in Strongly Coupled Heterotic String Theory

    Get PDF
Strongly coupled heterotic E8×E8E_8\times E_8 string theory, compactified to four dimensions on a large Calabi-Yau manifold X{\bf X}, may represent a viable candidate for the description of low-energy particle phenomenology. In this regime, heterotic string theory is adequately described by low-energy MM-theory on R4×S1/Z2×X{\bf R}^4\times{\bf S}^1/{\bf Z}_2\times{\bf X}, with the two E8E_8's supported at the two boundaries of the world. In this paper we study the effects of gluino condensation, as a mechanism for supersymmetry breaking in this MM-theory regime. We show that when a gluino condensate forms in MM-theory, the conditions for unbroken supersymmetry can still be satisfied locally in the orbifold dimension S1/Z2{\bf S}^1/{\bf Z}_2. Supersymmetry is then only broken by the global topology of the orbifold dimension, in a mechanism similar to the Casimir effect. This mechanism leads to a natural hierarchy of scales, and elucidates some aspects of heterotic string theory that might be relevant to the stabilization of moduli and the smallness of the cosmological constant.Comment: 22 pages, harvmac, no figure

Dark Matter, Muon g-2 and Other SUSY Constraints

Recent developments constraining the SUSY parameter space are reviewed within the framework of SUGRA GUT models. The WMAP data is seen to reduce the error in the density of cold dark matter by about a factor of four, implying that the lightest stau is only 5 -10 GeV heavier than the lightest neutralino when m_0, m_{1/2} < 1 TeV. The CMD-2 re-analysis of their data has reduced the disagreement between the Standard Model prediction and the Brookhaven measurement of the muon magnetic moment to 1.9 sigma, while using the tau decay data plus CVC, the disagreement is 0.7 sigma. (However, the two sets of data remain inconsistent at the 2.9 sigma level.) The recent Belle and BABAR measurements of the B -> phi K CP violating parameters and branching ratios are discussed. They are analyzed theoretically within the BBNS improved factorization method. The CP parameters are in disagreement with the Standard Model at the 2.7 sigma level, and the branching ratios are low by a factor of two or more over most of the parameter space. It is shown that both anomalies can naturally be accounted for by adding a non-universal cubic soft breaking term at M_G mixing the second and third generations.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, plenary talk at Beyond The Desert '03, Castle Ringberg, Germany, June 9, 2003. Updated Post-WMAP Benchmarks for Supersymmetry

We update a previously-proposed set of supersymmetric benchmark scenarios, taking into account the precise constraints on the cold dark matter density obtained by combining WMAP and other cosmological data, as well as the LEP and b -> s gamma constraints. We assume that R parity is conserved and work within the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking scalar and gaugino masses m_0 and m_1/2. In most cases, the relic density calculated for the previous benchmarks may be brought within the WMAP range by reducing slightly m_0, but in two cases more substantial changes in m_0 and m_1/2 are made. Since the WMAP constraint reduces the effective dimensionality of the CMSSM parameter space, one may study phenomenology along `WMAP lines' in the (m_1/2, m_0) plane that have acceptable amounts of dark matter. We discuss the production, decays and detectability of sparticles along these lines, at the LHC and at linear e+ e- colliders in the sub- and multi-TeV ranges, stressing the complementarity of hadron and lepton colliders, and with particular emphasis on the neutralino sector. Finally, we preview the accuracy with which one might be able to predict the density of supersymmetric cold dark matter using collider measurements.Comment: 43 pages LaTeX, 13 eps figure

    Deconstructing Gaugino Mediation

    Get PDF
We present a model of supersymmetry breaking which produces gaugino masses and negligible scalar masses at a high scale. The model is inspired by ``deconstructing'' or ``latticizing'' models in extra dimensions where supersymmetry breaking and visible matter are spatially separated. We find a simple four-dimensional model which only requires two lattice sites (or gauge groups) to reproduce the phenomenology.Comment: LaTeX, 9 pages, acknowledgements adde

Cosmic antiprotons as a probe for supersymmetric dark matter?

    Get PDF
The flux of cosmic ray antiprotons from neutralino annihilations in the galactic halo is computed for a large sample of models in the MSSM (the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model). We also revisit the problem of estimating the background of low-energy cosmic ray induced secondary antiprotons, taking into account their subsequent interactions (and energy loss) and the presence of nuclei in the interstellar matter. We consider a two-zone diffusion model, with and without a galactic wind. We find that, given the uncertainties in the background predictions, there is no need for a primary (exotic) component to explain present data. However, allowing for a signal by playing with the uncertainties in the background estimate, we discuss the characteristic features of the supersymmetric models which give a satisfactory description of the data. We point out that in some cases the optimal kinetic energy to search for a signal from supersymmetric dark matter is above several GeV, rather than the traditional sub-GeV region. The large astrophysical uncertainties involved do not, one the other hand, allow the exclusion of any of the MSSM models we consider, on the basis of data. We present besides numerical results also convenient parameterizations of the antiproton yields of all `basic' two-body final states. We also give examples of the yield and differential energy spectrum for a set of supersymmetric models with high rates. We also remark that it is difficult to put a limit on the antiproton lifetime from present measurements, since the injection of antiprotons from neutralino annihilation can compensate the loss from decay.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, uses emulateapj.st

On the Stability of the Classical Vacua in a Minimal SU(5) 5-D Supergravity Model

    Get PDF
We consider a five-dimensional supergravity model with SU(5) gauge symmetry and the minimal field content. Studying the arising scalar potential we find that the gauging of the U(1)RU(1)_R symmetry of the five-dimensional supergravity causes instabilities. Lifting the instabilities the vacua are of Anti-de-Sitter type and SU(5) is broken along with supersymmetry. Keeping the U(1)RU(1)_R ungauged the potential has flat directions along which supersymmetry is unbroken.Comment: 24 pages, 2 figure
