CP violation and mass hierarchy at medium baselines in the large theta(13) era
The large value of theta(13) recently measured by rector and accelerator
experiments opens unprecedented opportunities for precision oscillation
physics. In this paper, we reconsider the physics reach of medium baseline
superbeams. For theta(13) ~ 9 degree we show that facilities at medium
baselines -- i.e. L ~ O(1000 km) -- remain optimal for the study of CP
violation in the leptonic sector, although their ultimate precision strongly
depends on experimental systematics. This is demonstrated in particular for
facilities of practical interest in Europe: a CERN to Gran Sasso and CERN to
Phyasalmi nu_mu beam based on the present SPS and on new high power 50 GeV
proton driver. Due to the large value of theta(13), spectral information can be
employed at medium baselines to resolve the sign ambiguity and determine the
neutrino mass hierarchy. However, longer baselines, where matter effects
dominate the nu_mu->nu_e transition, can achieve much stronger sensitivity to
sign(Delta m^2) even at moderate exposures.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, version to appear in EPJ
A three solar cell system based on a self-supporting, transparent AlGaAs top solar cell
Development of a three solar cell stack can lead to practical efficiencies greater than 30 percent (1x,AM0). A theoretical efficiency limitation of 43.7 percent at AM0 and one sun is predicted by this model. Including expected losses, a practical system efficiency of 36.8 percent is anticipated. These calculations are based on a 1.93eV/1.43eV/0.89eV energy band gap combination. AlGaAs/GaAs/GaInAsP materials can be used with a six-terminal wiring configuration. The key issues for multijunction solar cells are the top and middle solar cell performance and the sub-bandgap transparency. AstroPower has developed a technique to fabricate AlGaAs solar cells on rugged, self-supporting, transparent AlGaAs substrates. Top solar cell efficiencies greater than 11 percent AM0 have been achieved. State-of-the-art GaAs or InP devices will be used for the middle solar cell. GaInAsP will be used to fabricate the bottom solar cell. This material is lattice-matched to InP and offers a wide range of bandgaps for optimization of the three solar cell stack. Liquid phase epitaxy is being used to grow the quaternary material. Initial solar cells have shown open-circuit voltages of 462 mV for a bandgap of 0.92eV. Design rules for the multijunction three solar cell stack are discussed. The progress in the development of the self-supporting AlGaAs top solar cell and the GaInAsP bottom solar cell is presented
Three-dimensional arrangement of β-tricalcium phosphate granules evaluated by microcomputed tomography and fractal analysis.
The macrophysical properties of granular biomaterials used to fill bone defects have rarely been considered. Granules of a given biomaterial occupy three-dimensional (3-D) space when packed together and create a macroporosity suitable for the invasion of vascular and bone cells. Granules of β-tricalcium phosphate were prepared using polyurethane foam technology and increasing the amount of material powder in the slurry (10, 11, 15, 18, 21 and 25g). After sintering, granules of 1000-2000μm were prepared by sieving. They were analyzed morphologically by scanning electron microscopy and placed in polyethylene test tubes to produce 3-D scaffolds. Microcomputed tomography (microCT) was used to image the scaffolds and to determine porosity and fractal dimension in three dimensions. Two-dimensional sections of the microCT models were binarized and used to compute classical morphometric parameters describing porosity (interconnectivity index, strut analysis and star volumes) and fractal dimensions. In addition, two newly important fractal parameters (lacunarity and succolarity) were measured. Compression analysis of the stacks of granules was done. Porosity decreased as the amount of material in the slurry increased but non-linear relationships were observed between microarchitectural parameters describing the pores and porosity. Lacunarity increased in the series of granules but succolarity (reflecting the penetration of a fluid) was maximal in the 15-18g groups and decreased noticeably in the 25g group. The 3-D arrangement of biomaterial granules studied by these new fractal techniques allows the optimal formulation to be derived based on the lowest amount of material, suitable mechanical resistance during crushing and the creation of large interconnected pores
Scientific basis of nanotechnology, implications for the food sector and future trends
Nanotechnologies are opening up new horizons in almost all
scientific and technological fields. Among these, applications
of nanotechnologies are expected to bring large benefits and
add value to the food and food-related industries through the current regulatory framework
whole food chain, from production to processing, safety, packaging,
transportation, storage and delivery. Nanotechnology
consists in the realization and manipulation of nano-sized
matter, the unique properties of which with respect to their
bulk counterparts are illustrated and discussed. Then, the
main tools and techniques routinely used in nanotechnology
for the nanoscale characterization of food matrices as well
as for the analytical determination of nanomaterials in food
samples are reviewed. Finally, safety and risk assessment issues
are discussed and an overview of applications of nanotechnology
to the food sector is provided along with a description of th
Charge-transport and tunneling in single-walled carbon nanotubes
We investigate experimentally the transport properties of single-walled
carbon nanotube bundles as a function of temperature and applied current over
broad intervals of these variables. The analysis is performed on arrays of
nanotube bundles whose axes are aligned along the direction of the externally
supplied bias current. The data are found consistent with a charge transport
model governed by the tunnelling between metallic regions occurring through
potential barriers generated by nanotubes contact areas or bundles surfaces.
Based on this model and on experimental data we describe quantitatively the
dependencies of the amplitude of these barriers upon bias current and
temperature.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Physical Review Letters (in press
The 4 K outer cryostat for the CUORE experiment: construction and quality control
The external shell of the CUORE cryostat is a large cryogen-free system
designed to host the dilution refrigerator and the bolometers of the CUORE
experiment in a low radioactivity environment. The three vessels that form the
outer shell were produced and delivered to the Gran Sasso underground
Laboratories in July 2012. In this paper, we describe the production techniques
and the validation tests done at the production site in 2012.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures; to appear in NIM
