A possible mathematics for the unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity
This paper summarizes and generalizes a recently proposed mathematical
framework that unifies the standard formalisms of special relativity and
quantum mechanics. The framework is based on Hilbert spaces H of functions of
four space-time variables x,t, furnished with an additional indefinite inner
product invariant under Poincar\'e transformations, and isomorphisms of these
spaces that preserve the indefinite metric. The indefinite metric is
responsible for breaking the symmetry between space and time variables and for
selecting a family of Hilbert subspaces that are preserved under Galileo
transformations. Within these subspaces the usual quantum mechanics with
Schr\"odinger evolution and t as the evolution parameter is derived.
Simultaneously, the Minkowski space-time is isometrically embedded into H,
Poincar\'e transformations have unique extensions to isomorphisms of H and the
embedding commutes with Poincar\'e transformations. The main new result is a
proof that the framework accommodates arbitrary pseudo-Riemannian space-times
furnished with the action of the diffeomorphism group
Effects of cluster diffusion on the island density and size distribution in submonolayer island growth
The effects of cluster diffusion on the submonolayer island density and
island-size distribution are studied for the case of irreversible growth of
compact islands on a 2D substrate. In our model, we assume instantaneous
coalescence of circular islands, while the cluster mobility is assumed to
exhibit power-law decay as a function of island-size with exponent mu. Results
are presented for mu = 1/2, 1, and 3/2 corresponding to cluster diffusion via
Brownian motion, correlated evaporation-condensation, and edge-diffusion
respectively, as well as for higher values including mu = 2,3, and 6. We also
compare our results with those obtained in the limit of no cluster mobility
corresponding to mu = infinity. In agreement with theoretical predictions of
power-law behavior of the island-size distribution (ISD) for mu < 1, for mu =
1/2 we find Ns({\theta}) ~ s^{-\tau} (where Ns({\theta}) is the number of
islands of size s at coverage {\theta}) up to a cross-over island-size S_c.
However, the value of {\tau} obtained in our simulations is higher than the
mean-field (MF) prediction {\tau} = (3 - mu)/2. Similarly, the value of the
exponent {\zeta} corresponding to the dependence of S_c on the average
island-size S (e.g. S_c ~ S^{\zeta}) is also significantly higher than the MF
prediction {\zeta} = 2/(mu+1). A generalized scaling form for the ISD is also
proposed for mu < 1, and using this form excellent scaling is found for mu =
1/2. However, for finite mu >= 1 neither the generalized scaling form nor the
standard scaling form Ns({\theta}) = {\theta} /S^2 f(s/S) lead to scaling of
the entire ISD for finite values of the ratio R of the monomer diffusion rate
to deposition flux. Instead, the scaled ISD becomes more sharply peaked with
increasing R and coverage. This is in contrast to models of epitaxial growth
with limited cluster mobility for which good scaling occurs over a wide range
of coverages.Comment: 12 pages, submitted to Physical Review
Prediction of irradiation embrittlement in WWER-440 Reactor Pressure Vessel materials
Prediction of irradiation embrittlement of Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) materials is performed usually in accordance with relevant codes and standards that are based on large amount of information from surveillance and research programs. The existing Russian Code (Standard for Strength Calculations of Components and Piping in Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) – PNAE G 7-002-86) for the WWER RPV irradiation embrittlement assessment was approved more than 20 years ago and based mostly on the experimental data obtained in research reactors with accelerated irradiation. The validation of the above Code has been made without the surveillance specimen results that were produced in 1980-1990s. Thus, new analysis of all available data was required for more precise prediction of radiation embrittlement of RPV materials. Based on the fact that large amount of data from surveillance program as well as some research programs, IAEA International Database on RPV Materials (IDRPVM) has been used for the detailed analysis radiation embrittlement of WWER RPV materials. Thus, the following activities have been performed within the IAEA Co-ordinated project: Collection of complete WWER-440 surveillance and other similarly important data into the IDRPVM, Analysis of radiation embrittlement data of WWER-440 RPV materials using IDRPVM database, Evaluation of predictive formulae depending on material chemical composition, neutron fluence and neutron flux, Development of the guidelines for prediction of radiation embrittlement of operating reactor pressure vessels of WWER-440 including methodology for evaluation of surveillance data of a specific operating unit.
CompHEP 4.4 - Automatic Computations from Lagrangians to Events
We present a new version of the CompHEP program (version 4.4). We describe
shortly new issues implemented in this version, namely, simplification of quark
flavor combinatorics for the evaluation of hadronic processes, Les Houches
Accord based CompHEP-PYTHIA interface, processing the color configurations of
events, implementation of MSSM, symbolical and numerical batch modes, etc. We
discuss how the CompHEP program is used for preparing event generators for
various physical processes. We mention a few concrete physics examples for
CompHEP based generators prepared for the LHC and Tevatron.Comment: The paper has been presented on IX International Workshop on Advanced

Inclusive meson production in peripheral collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions
There exist several proposals to use Weizs\"{a}cker-Williams photons
generated by ultrarelativistic heavy ions to produce exotic particles in
fusion reactions. To estimate the background conditions for such
reactions we analyze various mechanisms of meson production in very peripheral
collisions of ultrarelativistic heavy ions at RHIC and LHC energies. Besides
fusion they include also electromagnetic interactions
and strong nucleon-nucleon interactions in grazing collisions. All these
processes are characterised by low multiplicities of produced particles.
and events are simulated by corresponding Monte Carlo codes,
RELDIS and FRITIOF. In each of these processes a certain fraction of pions is
produced close to the mid-rapidity region that gives a background for the
events. The possibility of selecting mesons produced in
fusion events via different cut procedures is
demonstrated.Comment: 27 pages with 4 eps-figures included, uses axodraw.sty Tab.2 and 3

Use of a Semi-Mechanistic Analytical Model to Analyze Radiation Embrittlement of Model Alloys: Cu and P Effects
We performed analysis of the basic mechanism of
radiation embrittlement of steels and weld seams
with account of the direct matrix fracture, precipitation
and segregation of chemical elements. A
model is proposed, which describes matrix fracture
due to its neutron bombardment and for 11
model alloys provides an accurate description of
the processes of primary embrittlement and
re-embrittlement after scheduled heat treatment
(annealing). The distinctive features of the proposed
model are a possibility of explaining the
embrittlement processes before and after annealing
for alloys with low (or zero) Ni content and
its applicability to the analysis of operational behavior
of WWER materials.

Effective Ag doping and resistance to sulphur poisoning of La-Mn perovskites for the catalytic flameless combustion of methane
Perovskite-like structured catalysts showed satisfactory activity for the low temperature flameless combustion of methane. This process reduces the emission of CO, NOx and unburnt hydrocarbons. Partial metal ion substitution in the composition of perovskites may improve catalytic activity and it can modulate their resistance to sulfur poisoning. Silver is an interesting dopant due to its limited solubility in the perovskite structure and suitable activity both in extra-and intra-framework positions. The amount of lattice silver tightly depends on the preparation procedure. Samples with nominal composition La1-xAgxMnO3+/-delta with x = 0; 0.05; 0.10 were prepared by flame spray pyrolysis (FP) and by the so-called sol-gel citrate method (SG). Temperature-programmed analysis, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy were used as the main characterisation tools. Almost all of the catalysts were very active for the flameless combustion of methane. The activity of the FP-prepared catalysts was always higher than that of the SG-prepared ones with identical nominal composition. Furthermore, partial substitution of Ag for La led to substantially higher activity both for SG- and FP-prepared catalysts and the catalytic activity increased with increasing Ag substitution. The residual activity after poisoning with tetrahydrothiophene, a common odoriser used in the natural gas grid, is also presented, together with the transient response of the samples upon poisoning
