Some issues when using Fourier analysis for the extraction of modal parameters
It is sometimes necessary to determine the manner in which structures deteriorate with respect to time; for instance when quantifying a material's ability to withstand sustained dynamic loads. In such cases, it is well established that loss of structural integrity is reflected by variations in modal characteristics such as stiffness. This paper addresses some practical limitations of Fourier analysis with respect to temporal resolution and the uncertainties associated with extracting variations in modal parameters. The statistical analysis of numerous numerical experiments shows how techniques, such as data overlapping and zero-padding, can be used to improve the sensitivity of modal parameter extraction
Phylogenetic inferences of Atelinae (Platyrrhini) based on multi-directional chromosome painting in Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles b. marginatus
We performed multi-directional chromosome painting in a comparative cytogenetic study of the three Atelinae species Brachyteles arachnoides, Ateles paniscus paniscus and Ateles belzebuth marginatus, in order to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships within this Platyrrhini subfamily. Comparative chromosome maps between these species were established by multi-color fluorescence in situ hybridization ( FISH) employing human, Saguinus oedipus and Lagothrix lagothricha chromosome-specific probes. The three species included in this study and four previously analyzed species from all four Atelinae genera were subjected to a phylogenetic analysis on the basis of a data matrix comprised of 82 discrete chromosome characters. The results confirmed that Atelinae represent a monophyletic clade with a putative ancestral karyotype of 2n = 62 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis revealed an evolutionary branching sequence \{Alouatta \{Brachyteles \{Lagothrix and Ateles\}\}\} in Atelinae and \{Ateles belzebuth marginatus \{Ateles paniscus paniscus \{Ateles belzebuth hybridus and Ateles geoffroyi\}\}\} in genus Ateles. Incorporating chemical signalling factors into cell-based models of growing epithelial tissues
In this paper we present a comprehensive computational framework within which the effects of chemical signalling factors on growing epithelial tissues can be studied. The method incorporates a vertex-based cell model, in conjunction with a solver for the governing chemical equations. The vertex model provides a natural mesh for the finite element method (FEM), with node movements determined by force laws. The arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian formulation is adopted to account for domain movement between iterations. The effects of cell proliferation and junctional rearrangements on the mesh are also examined. By implementing refinements of the mesh we show that the finite element (FE) approximation converges towards an accurate numerical solution. The potential utility of the system is demonstrated in the context of Decapentaplegic (Dpp), a morphogen which plays a crucial role in development of the Drosophila imaginal wing disc. Despite the presence of a Dpp gradient, growth is uniform across the wing disc. We make the growth rate of cells dependent on Dpp concentration and show that the number of proliferation events increases in regions of high concentration. This allows hypotheses regarding mechanisms of growth control to be rigorously tested. The method we describe may be adapted to a range of potential application areas, and to other cell-based models with designated node movements, to accurately probe the role of morphogens in epithelial tissues
Prevention of childhood poisoning in the home: overview of systematic reviews and a systematic review of primary studies
Unintentional poisoning is a significant child public health problem. This systematic overview of reviews, supplemented with a systematic review of recently published primary studies synthesizes evidence on non-legislative interventions to reduce childhood poisonings in the home with particular reference to interventions that could be implemented by Children's Centres in England or community health or social care services in other high income countries. Thirteen systematic reviews, two meta-analyses and 47 primary studies were identified. The interventions most commonly comprised education, provision of cupboard/drawer locks, and poison control centre (PCC) number stickers. Meta-analyses and primary studies provided evidence that interventions improved poison prevention practices. Twenty eight per cent of studies reporting safe medicine storage (OR from meta-analysis 1.57, 95% CI 1.22–2.02), 23% reporting safe storage of other products (OR from meta-analysis 1.63, 95% CI 1.22–2.17) and 46% reporting availability of PCC numbers (OR from meta-analysis 3.67, 95% CI 1.84–7.33) demonstrated significant effects favouring the intervention group. There was a lack of evidence that interventions reduced poisoning rates. Parents should be provided with poison prevention education, cupboard/drawer locks and emergency contact numbers to use in the event of a poisoning. Further research is required to determine whether improving poison prevention practices reduces poisoning rates
Optical antennas and plasmonics
Optical antenna is a nanoscale miniaturization of radio or microwave antennas
that is also governed by the rule of plasmonics. We introduce various types of
optical antenna and make an overview of recent developments in optical antenna
research. The role of local and surface plasmons in optical antenna is
explained through antenna resonance and resonance conditions for specific metal
structures are explicitly obtained. Strong electric field is shown to exist
within a highly localized region of optical antennas such as antenna feed gap
or apertures. We describe physical properties of field enhancement in
apertures(circular and rectangular holes) and gaps(infinite slit and feed gap),
as well as experimental techniques measuring enhanced electric vector field. We
discuss about analogies and differences between conventional and optical

Lodged in the throat: Internal infinities and AdS/CFT
In the context of AdS3/CFT2, we address spacetimes with a certain sort of
internal infinity as typified by the extreme BTZ black hole. The internal
infinity is a null circle lying at the end of the black hole's infinite throat.
We argue that such spacetimes may be described by a product CFT of the form
CFT-L * CFT-R, where CFT-R is associated with the asymptotically AdS boundary
while CFT-L is associated with the null circle. Our particular calculations
analyze the CFT dual of the extreme BTZ black hole in a linear toy model of
AdS3/CFT2. Since the BTZ black hole is a quotient of AdS3, the dual CFT state
is a corresponding quotient of the CFT vacuum state. This state turns out to
live in the aforementioned product CFT. We discuss this result in the context

Impact of Space Weather on Climate and Habitability of Terrestrial Type Exoplanets
The current progress in the detection of terrestrial type exoplanets has
opened a new avenue in the characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres and in
the search for biosignatures of life with the upcoming ground-based and space
missions. To specify the conditions favorable for the origin, development and
sustainment of life as we know it in other worlds, we need to understand the
nature of astrospheric, atmospheric and surface environments of exoplanets in
habitable zones around G-K-M dwarfs including our young Sun. Global environment
is formed by propagated disturbances from the planet-hosting stars in the form
of stellar flares, coronal mass ejections, energetic particles, and winds
collectively known as astrospheric space weather. Its characterization will
help in understanding how an exoplanetary ecosystem interacts with its host
star, as well as in the specification of the physical, chemical and biochemical
conditions that can create favorable and/or detrimental conditions for
planetary climate and habitability along with evolution of planetary internal
dynamics over geological timescales. A key linkage of (astro) physical,
chemical, and geological processes can only be understood in the framework of
interdisciplinary studies with the incorporation of progress in heliophysics,
astrophysics, planetary and Earth sciences. The assessment of the impacts of
host stars on the climate and habitability of terrestrial (exo)planets will
significantly expand the current definition of the habitable zone to the
biogenic zone and provide new observational strategies for searching for
signatures of life. The major goal of this paper is to describe and discuss the
current status and recent progress in this interdisciplinary field and to
provide a new roadmap for the future development of the emerging field of

Observation and resonant x-ray optical interpretation of multi-atom resonant photoemission effects in O 1s emission from NiO
We present experimental and theoretical results for the variation of the O 1s
intensity from a NiO(001) surface as the excitation energy is varied through
the Ni 2p1/2,3/2 absorption resonances, and as the incidence angle of the
radiation is varied from grazing to larger values. For grazing incidence, a
strong multi-atom resonant photoemission (MARPE) effect is seen on the O 1s
intensity as the Ni 2p resonances are crossed, but its magnitude decreases
rapidly as the incidence angle is increased. Resonant x-ray optical (RXRO)
calculations are found to predict these effects very well, although the
experimental effects are found to decrease at higher incidence angles faster
than those in theory. The potential influence of photoelectron diffraction
effects on such measurements are also considered, including experimental data
with azimuthal-angle variation and corresponding
multiple-scattering-diffraction calculations, but we conclude that they do not
vary beyond what is expected on the basis of the change in photoelectron
kinetic energy. Varying from linear polarization to circular polarization is
found to enhance these effects in NiO considerably, although the reasons are
not clear. We also discuss the relationship of these measurements to other
related interatomic resonance experiments and theoretical developments, and

Four Lessons in Versatility or How Query Languages Adapt to the Web
Exposing not only human-centered information, but machine-processable data on the Web is one of the commonalities of recent Web trends. It has enabled a new kind of applications and businesses where the data is used in ways not foreseen by the data providers. Yet this exposition has fractured the Web into islands of data, each in different Web formats: Some providers choose XML, others RDF, again others JSON or OWL, for their data, even in similar domains. This fracturing stifles innovation as application builders have to cope not only with one Web stack (e.g., XML technology) but with several ones, each of considerable complexity. With Xcerpt we have developed a rule- and pattern based query language that aims to give shield application builders from much of this complexity: In a single query language XML and RDF data can be accessed, processed, combined, and re-published. Though the need for combined access to XML and RDF data has been recognized in previous work (including the W3C’s GRDDL), our approach differs in four main aspects: (1) We provide a single language (rather than two separate or embedded languages), thus minimizing the conceptual overhead of dealing with disparate data formats. (2) Both the declarative (logic-based) and the operational semantics are unified in that they apply for querying XML and RDF in the same way. (3) We show that the resulting query language can be implemented reusing traditional database technology, if desirable. Nevertheless, we also give a unified evaluation approach based on interval labelings of graphs that is at least as fast as existing approaches for tree-shaped XML data, yet provides linear time and space querying also for many RDF graphs. We believe that Web query languages are the right tool for declarative data access in Web applications and that Xcerpt is a significant step towards a more convenient, yet highly efficient data access in a “Web of Data”
