Characterizations of probability distributions via bivariate regression of record values

Bairamov et al. (Aust N Z J Stat 47:543-547, 2005) characterize the exponential distribution in terms of the regression of a function of a record value with its adjacent record values as covariates. We extend these results to the case of non-adjacent covariates. We also consider a more general setting involving monotone transformations. As special cases, we present characterizations involving weighted arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic means.Comment: accepted in Metrik

Electromagnetic Contributions to the Schiff Moment

The Schiff moment, \smij, is a parity and time reversal violating fermion-fermion coupling. The nucleus-electron Schiff moment generically gives the most important contribution to the electric dipole moments of atoms and molecules with zero net intrinsic electronic spin and nuclear spin 12{1 \over 2}. Here, the electromagnetic contribution to the Schiff moment, \emij, is considered. For a nucleon, the leading chirally violating contribution to this interaction is calculable in the chiral limit in terms of the parity and time reversal violating pion-nucleon coupling. For the Schiff moment of heavy nuclei, this chiral contribution is somewhat smaller than the finite size effect discussed previously in the literature.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure (not included), Tex file, requires phyzzx, preprint SCIPP 93/4

    Digitally Programmable Fully Differential Filter

In this paper a new digitally programmable voltage mode fully differential Kerwin-Huelsman-Newcomb(KHN) filter is realized using digitally controlled CMOS fully balanced output transconductor (DCBOTA). The realized filter uses five DCBOTAs, a single resistor and two capacitors. The filter provides low-pass, high-pass and band-pass responses simultaneously. The pole-frequency of all the responses is controlled by externally applying an 8- bit digital control word. All the responses exhibit independent digital control for pole-ω0 and pole-Q. The proposed filter also offers low passive sensitivities. Non-ideal gain and parasitic associated with the actual DCBOTA is also discussed. The CMMR results for low-pass response are also included which highlight the advantage of a fully-differential operation. Exhaustive PSPICE simulation is carried out using 0.5µ technology which may be further scaled to explore state-of-the-art applications of the proposed circuit

A clinical trial comparing parenteral oxytetracyline and enrofloxacin on time to recovery in sheep lame with acute or chronic footrot in Kashmir, India

Background No clinical trials have been conducted in India on the efficacy of parenteral antibacterials to treat footrot in sheep. In addition, there are no studies worldwide on the efficacy of parenteral antibacterials to treat chronic footrot. Sixty two sheep with acute footrot and 30 sheep with chronic footrot from 7 villages in Kashmir, India were recruited into two separate trials. Sheep with acute footrot were allocated to one of three treatments using stratified random sampling: long acting parenteral oxytetracycline, long acting parenteral enrofloxacin and topical application of potassium permanganate solution (a traditional treatment used by sheep farmers in India). In a quasi pre-post intervention design, sheep with chronic footrot that had not responded to treatment with potassium permanaganate were randomly allocated to treatment with one of the two parenteral antibacterials mentioned above. Sheep with acute footrot were treated on day 0 and those with chronic footrot on days 0, 3, 6 and 9. Sheep were monitored for up to 28 days after treatment. Time to recovery from lameness and initial healing of lesions was assessed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves, nonparametric log-rank and Wilcoxon sign-rank tests. Results There was significant correlation in recovery from lameness and presence of healing lesions in sheep with acute (r = 0.94) or chronic (r = 0.98) footrot. Sheep with acute footrot which were treated with parenteral antibacterials had a significantly more rapid recovery from lameness and had healing lesions (median = 7 days) compared with those treated with topical potassium permanganate solution (less than 50% recovered in 28 days). The median time to recovery in sheep with chronic footrot treated with either antibacterial was 17 days; this was significantly lower than the median of 75 days lame before treatment with antibacterials. The median time to recovery for both acute and chronic footrot increased as the severity of lesions increased. There was no difference in time to recovery by age, body condition score, duration lame, or presence of pus in the foot within acute and chronically affected sheep. Conclusions We conclude that use of parenteral antibacterials to treat sheep lame with either acute or chronic footrot in India is highly effective. This is likely to improve welfare and give economic benefits to the farmers

In this study, the performance of a photovoltaic-thermal solar collector with compound parabolic collector for clear day in winter and summer season was investigated. Phase change material storage unit, compound parabolic collector unit, photovoltaic thermal unit were integrated into one piece to reduce the area to get higher performance and better concentration ratio. The performance of water flow rate, heat removal factor, amount of energy storage of the collector in winter season and comparison of temperature variation, total generated energy, performance factor in summer season by varying different parameters were evaluated. Water flow rate increases up to 0.004 kg/s corresponding to the thermal efficiency of around 42%. Heat removal factor for thermal collector was in the range of 0.94-0.96, which indicates better energy gain of the system and effective outlet water temperature was found 55 0C in winter season. The total generated thermal energy 1500W and maximum performance factor of a collector was 0.0135 kW-1m2 in summer season. Finally total efficiency of a collector varies from 58% -68% in summer season
