On parity check collections for iterative erasure decoding that correct all correctable erasure patterns of a given size
Recently there has been interest in the construction of small parity check
sets for iterative decoding of the Hamming code with the property that each
uncorrectable (or stopping) set of size three is the support of a codeword and
hence uncorrectable anyway. Here we reformulate and generalise the problem, and
improve on this construction. First we show that a parity check collection that
corrects all correctable erasure patterns of size m for the r-th order Hamming
code (i.e, the Hamming code with codimension r) provides for all codes of
codimension a corresponding ``generic'' parity check collection with this
property. This leads naturally to a necessary and sufficient condition on such
generic parity check collections. We use this condition to construct a generic
parity check collection for codes of codimension r correcting all correctable
erasure patterns of size at most m, for all r and m <= r, thus generalising the
known construction for m=3. Then we discussoptimality of our construction and
show that it can be improved for m>=3 and r large enough. Finally we discuss

Symmetry analysis of magneto-optical effects: The case of x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption at the transition metal L23 edge
A general symmetry analysis of the optical conductivity or scattering tensor
is used to rewrite the conductivity tensor as a sum of fundamental spectra
multiplied by simple functions depending on the local magnetization direction.
Using this formalism, we present several numerical examples at the transition
metal L23 edge. From these numerical calculations we can conclude that large
deviations from the magneto-optical effects in spherical symmetry are found.
These findings are in particular important for resonant x-ray diffraction
experiments where the polarization dependence and azimuthal dependence of the
scattered Bragg intensity is used to determine the local ordered magnetization
direction
Synchrotron radiation from a runaway electron distribution in tokamaks
The synchrotron radiation emitted by runaway electrons in a fusion plasma
provides information regarding the particle momenta and pitch-angles of the
runaway electron population through the strong dependence of the synchrotron
spectrum on these parameters. Information about the runaway density and its
spatial distribution, as well as the time evolution of the above quantities,
can also be deduced. In this paper we present the synchrotron radiation spectra
for typical avalanching runaway electron distributions. Spectra obtained for a
distribution of electrons are compared to the emission of mono-energetic
electrons with a prescribed pitch-angle. We also examine the effects of
magnetic field curvature and analyse the sensitivity of the resulting spectrum
to perturbations to the runaway distribution. The implications for the deduced
runaway electron parameters are discussed. We compare our calculations to

Evidence for a temperature-induced spin-state transition of Co3+ in La2-xSrxCoO4
We study the magnetic susceptibility of mixed-valent La2-xSrxCoO4 single
crystals in the doping range of 0.5<= x <= 0.8 for temperatures up to 1000 K.
The magnetism below room temperature is described by paramagnetic Co2+ in the
high-spin state and by Co3+ in the non-magnetic low-spin state. Above room
temperature, an increase in susceptibility compared to the behavior expected
from Co2+ is seen, which we attribute to a spin-state transition of Co3+. The
susceptibility is analyzed by comparison to full-multiplet calculations for the
thermal population of the high- and intermediate-spin states of Co3+
Home country effects of offshoring. A critical survey on empirical literature.
The International fragmentation of production processes is of rising importance. One part of this fragmentation involves the relocation of a production process from a home- to a new host country. This literature survey deals with the effects of such relocations on the home country. First of all, we try to conceptualize the terms and definitions most frequently used in this context which are "outsourcing", "offshore outsourcing" and "offshoring". Despite the fact that there is little textual documentation dealing directly with the phenomena of offshoring and offshore outsourcing we try to give an overview of possible empirical literature to which one can regard to. Including FDI literature we try to cover empirical literature which can provide helpful insight on the effects of a relocation to foreign countries on the home country in connection with wages, skill upgrading, prices, profits, taxes and unions.
