    Discrete particle simulation of the homogeneous fluidization of Geldart A particles

    The homogeneous fluidization of Geldart A particles has been studied with a 2D soft-sphere discrete particle model. We find that the homogeneous fluidization regime represents a quasi-equilibrium state where the force balance exists at the macroscopic-level, but not at the level of individual particles. The velocity fluctuation of particles is an exponential function of the squared superficial gas velocity in the homogeneous fluidization regime, not a linear function as found by\ud Cody et al

    Air-induced inverse Chladni patterns

    When very light particles are sprinkled on a resonating horizontal plate, inverse Chladni patterns are formed. Instead of going to the nodal lines of the plate, where they would form a standard Chladni pattern, the particles are dragged to the antinodes by the air currents induced by the vibration of the plate. Here we present a detailed picture of the mechanism using numerical simulations involving both the particles and the air. Surprisingly, the time-averaged Eulerian velocity, commonly used in these type of problems, does not explain the motion of the particles: it even has the opposite direction, towards the nodal lines. The key to the inverse Chladni patterning is found in the averaged velocity of a tracer particle moving along with the air: this Lagrangian velocity, averaged over a vibration cycle, is directed toward the antinodes. The Chladni plate thus provides a unique example of a system in which the Eulerian and Lagrangian velocities point in opposite direction

    Modeling and chemical vapor deposition in a fluidized bed reactor based on discrete particle simulation

    For better understanding the process of particle coating by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in the fluidized bed, the simulation of the deposition process was combined with a discrete particle model (DPM). Based on the experimental results of the thermal decomposition of tri-isobutyl-aluminum (TIBA) to produce aluminum onto glass beads, mechanisms on the micro-scale were investigated by single particle tracking. Zones of excessive growth as well as zones of insufficient mixing were identified. In particular, the take-up of aluminum was traced for selected particles that exhibited a large mass of deposited aluminum what in turn provides insight into the homogeneity and quantity of the coating throughout the bed material

    The prognostic value of the hamstring outcome score to predict the risk of hamstring injuries

    OBJECTIVES: Hamstring injuries are common among soccer players. The hamstring outcome score (HaOS) might be useful to identify amateur players at risk of hamstring injury. Therefore the aims of this study were: To determine the association between the HaOS and prior and new hamstring injuries in amateur soccer players, and to determine the prognostic value of the HaOS for identifying players with or without previous hamstring injuries at risk of future injury. DESIGN: Cohort study. METHODS: HaOS scores and information about previous injuries were collected at baseline and new injuries were prospectively registered during a cluster-randomized controlled trial involving 400 amateur soccer players. Analysis of variance and t-tests were used to determine the association between the HaOS and previous and new hamstring injury, respectively. Logistic regression analysis indicated the prognostic value of the HaOS for predicting new hamstring injuries. RESULTS: Analysis of data of 356 players indicated that lower HaOS scores were associated with more previous hamstring injuries (F=17.4; p=0.000) and that players with lower HaOS scores sustained more new hamstring injuries (T=3.59, df=67.23, p=0.001). With a conventional HaOS score cut-off of 80%, logistic regression models yielded a probability of hamstring injuries of 11%, 18%, and 28% for players with 0,1, or 2 hamstring injuries in the previous season, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The HaOS is associated with previous and future hamstring injury and might be a useful tool to provide players with insight into their risk of sustaining a new hamstring injury risk when used in combination with previous injuries

    Social identification and depression:A meta-analysis

    A meta‐analysis of 76 studies (N = 31,016) examined the relationship between social identification and depression. Overall, individuals who identify highly with a group tend to report less depression (average rz = −.15). However, a large amount of variability between studies was observed. The 95% prediction interval, which indicates the true effect size that can be expected in future research, ranged from rz = −.50 to .19. The relationship between depression and social identification is more complex than previously assumed. Some variability is related to the social identification measure used. Studies that focused on identification with interactive groups (rz = −.28) had larger effect sizes than studies that focused on social categories (rz = −.11). Moreover, studies of non‐stigmatized groups (rz = −.24) had larger effect sizes than studies of stigmatized groups (rz = −.10). In conclusion, the structure and social identity content of groups appear to play an important role in the relationship between depression and social identification

    Effects of correcting metabolic acidosis on muscle mass and functionality in chronic kidney disease:a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Metabolic acidosis unfavourably influences the nutritional status of patients with non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease (CKD) including the loss of muscle mass and functionality, but the benefits of correction are uncertain. We investigated the effects of correcting metabolic acidosis on nutritional status in patients with CKD in a systematic review and meta-analysis. A search was conducted in MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library from inception to June 2023. Study selection, bias assessment, and data extraction were independently performed by two reviewers. The Cochrane risk of bias tool was used to assess the quality of individual studies. We applied random effects meta-analysis to obtain pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We retrieved data from 12 intervention studies including 1995 patients, with a mean age of 63.7 ± 11.7 years, a mean estimated glomerular filtration rate of 29.8 ± 8.8 mL/min per 1.73 m2, and 58% were male. Eleven studies performed an intervention with oral sodium bicarbonate compared with either placebo or with standard care and one study compared veverimer, an oral HCl-binding polymer, with placebo. The mean change in serum bicarbonate was +3.6 mEq/L in the intervention group and +0.4 mEq/L in the control group. Correcting metabolic acidosis significantly improved muscle mass assessed by mid-arm muscle circumference (SMD 0.35 [95% CI 0.16 to 0.54], P &lt; 0.001) and functionality assessed with the sit-to-stand test (SMD −0.31 [95% CI −0.52 to 0.11], P = 0.003). We found no statistically significant effects on dietary protein intake, handgrip strength, serum albumin and prealbumin concentrations, and blood urea nitrogen. Correcting metabolic acidosis in patients with CKD improves muscle mass and physical function. Correction of metabolic acidosis should be considered as part of the nutritional care for patients with CKD.</p
