Extended Emission from Cygnus X-3 Detected with Chandra
We have discovered extended X-ray emission from the microquasar Cyg X-3 in
archival Chandra X-ray Observatory observations. A 5" wide structure lies
approximately 16" to the NE from the core point source and may be extended in
that direction. This angular scale corresponds to a physical extent of roughly
0.8 lyr, at a distance of 2.5 lyr from Cyg X-3 (assuming a 10 kpc distance).
The flux varied by a factor of 2.5 during the four months separating two of the
observations, indicating significant substructure. The peak 2-10 keV luminosity
was about 5e34 ergs/s. There may also be weaker, extended emission of similar
scale oppositely directed from the core, suggesting a bipolar outflow. This
structure is not part of the dust scattering halo, nor is it caused by the
Chandra point spread function. In this Letter we describe the observations and

RXTE Observations of LMC X-1 and LMC X-3
Of all known persistent stellar-mass black hole candidates, only LMC X-1 and
LMC X-3 consistently show spectra that are dominated by a soft, thermal
component. We present results from long (170ksec) Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer
(RXTE) observations of LMC X-1 and LMC X-3 made in 1996 December. The spectra
can be described by a multicolor disk blackbody plus an additional high-energy
power-law. Even though the spectra are very soft (Gamma is about 2.5), RXTE
detected a significant signal from LMC X-3 up to energies of 50keV, the hardest
energy at which the object was ever detected.
Focusing on LMC X-3, we present results from the first year of an ongoing
monitoring campaign with RXTE which started in 1997 January. We show that the
appearance of the object changes considerably over its ~200d long cycle. This
variability can either be explained by periodic changes in the mass transfer
rate or by a precessing accretion disk analogous to Her X-1.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, also available at

"Det var jag som var den där vuxna och han var ett barn" : En kvalitativ studie om hur det är att vara ett vuxet barn till en alkoholist
Syftet med vårt lärdomsprov är att undersöka hur uppväxten i en alkoholistfamilj har påverkat det vuxna barnet. Vi undersöker även vilka konsekvenser det vuxna barnet fått av uppväxten, vilket förhållningssätt det vuxna barnet har till alkohol och hur relationen mellan det vuxna barnet och den missbrukande föräldern ser ut.
I teoridelen definieras alkoholismen; vad är alkoholism, vem kan bli alkoholist och vad är skillnaden mellan en alkoholist och en storkonsument. Vidare fastställs missbrukets effekt på familjen, samt barnens roller i en alkoholistfamilj. Även typiska karaktärsdrag och konsekvenser i vuxenlivet tas upp.
I undersökningen har vi använt oss av kvalitativ undersökning. Vi har intervjuat fyra personer som har en pappa som är alkoholist. I resultatet framkommer både likheter och olikheter mellan vuxna barn till alkoholister, men den gemensamma nämnaren är konsekvenser i vuxenlivet för alla barn som levt med en alkoholiserad förälder.The aim of our thesis is to investigate how growing up with an alcoholic parent has affected the adult child. We also examine the impact on the adult child as a result of growing up in a family where one parent is or was an alcoholic, what kind of attitude the adult child has to alcohol and how the relationship between the adult child and the alcoholic parent has been affected.
In our theoretical part, we define alcoholism; what is alcoholism, who can become an alcoholic and what is the difference between an alcoholic and a big consumer. Further down we establish the impact on the family and the children's roles in the family. We also cover the typical characteristics and consequences in adult life.
In the survey, we used a qualitative research. We have interviewed four people who have a father who is an alcoholic. The result shows both similarities and differences between adult children of alcoholics, but the common denominator is that all children of alcoholics are affected in adulthood
Large X-ray Flares from LMC X-4: Discovery of Milli-hertz Quasi-periodic Oscillations and QPO-modulated Pulsations
We report the discovery of milli-hertz (mHz) quasi-periodic oscillations
(QPOs) and QPO-modulated pulsations during large X-ray flares from the
high-mass X-ray binary pulsar LMC X-4 using data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing
Explorer (RXTE). The lightcurves of flares show that, in addition to ~74 mHz
coherent pulsations, there exist two more time-varying temporal structures at
frequencies of ~0.65-1.35 and ~2-20 mHz. These relatively long-term structures
appear in the power density spectra as mHz QPOs and as well-developed sidebands
around the coherent pulse frequency as well, indicating that the amplitudes of
the coherent pulsation is modulated by those of the mHz QPOs. One interesting
feature is that, while the first flare shows symmetric sidebands around the
coherent pulse frequency, the second flare shows significant excess emission in
the lower-frequency sidebands due to the ~2-20 mHz QPOs. We discuss the origin
of the QPOs using a combination of the beat-frequency model and a modified
version of the Keplerian-frequency model. According to our discussion, it seems
to be possible to attribute the origin of the ~0.65-1.35 and ~2-20 mHz QPOs to
the beating between the rotational frequency of the neutron star and the
Keplerian frequency of large accreting clumps near the corotation radius and to
the orbital motion of clumps at Keplerian radii of 2-10 times 10^9 cm,

Multiple Cyclotron Lines in the Spectrum of 4U 0115+63
We report phase resolved spectroscopy of the transient accreting pulsar,
4U0115+63. For the first time, more than two cylotron resonance scattering
features are detected in the spectrum of an X-ray pulsar. The shape of the
fundamental line appears to be complex, and this is in agreement with
predictions of Monte-Carlo models. As in other pulsars, the line energies and
optical depths are strong functions of pulse phase. One possible model for this

Discovery of a New 89 Second X-ray Pulsar XTE J1906+09
We report on the discovery of a new pulsating X-ray source during Rossi X-ray
Timing Explorer observations of a low galactic latitude field centered at RA
(J2000) = 19 hr 05 m 43 s and Dec (J2000) = +08 deg 58 arcmin 48 arcsec.
Significant pulsations were detected by both the PCA and HEXTE instruments
aboard RXTE at a fundamental period of 89.17 +/- 0.02 seconds, with higher
harmonics also visible in the 2-10 keV power spectrum. The folded lightcurve
from the source is multiply peaked at lower energies, and changes to single
peaked morphology above ~20 keV. The phase averaged spectrum from the source is
well fit by strongly absorbed power law or thermal bremsstrahlung spectral
models of photon index 1.9 +/- 0.1 or temperature 19.5 +/- 4.6 keV,
respectively. The mean neutral hydrogen column density is approximately 10^23
cm^-2, suggesting a distance of >10 kpc to the source and a minimum 2-10 keV
X-ray luminosity of 2*10^{35} ergs s^{-1}. By comparison with other pulsars
with similar periods and luminosities, we suggest that XTE J1906+09 has a
supergiant companion with an underfilled Roche lobe. We speculate further that
one of the M stars in a peculiar M star binary system may be the companion.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures. Accepted by ApJ Letter
