    Nonlinear dynamic response of a uni-directional model for the tile/pad space shuttle thermal protection system

    A unidirectional analysis of the nonlinear dynamic behavior of the space shuttle tile/pad thermal protection system is developed and examined for imposed sinusoidal and random motions of the shuttle skin and/or applied tile pressure. The analysis accounts for the highly nonlinear stiffening hysteresis and viscous behavior of the pad which joins the tile to the shuttle skin. Where available, experimental data are used to confirm the validity of the analysis. Both analytical and experimental studies reveal that the system resonant frequency is very high for low amplitude oscillations but decreases rapidly to a minimum value with increasing amplitude. Analytical studies indicate that with still higher amplitude the resonant frequency increases slowly. The nonlinear pad is also responsible for the analytically and experimentally observed distorted response wave shapes having high sharp peaks when the system is subject to sinusoidal loads. Furthermore, energy dissipation in the pad is studied analytically and it is found that the energy dissipated is sufficiently high to cause rapid decay of dynamic transients. Nevertheless, the sharp peaked nonlinear responses of the system lead to higher magnification factors than would be expected in such a highly damped linear system

    Impurity scattering in a d-wave superconductor

    The influence of (non-magnetic and magnetic) impurities on the transition temperature of a d-wave superconductor is studied anew within the framework of BCS theory. Pairing interaction decreases linearly with the impurity concentration. Accordingly TcT_{c} suppression is proportional to the (potential or exchange) scattering rate, 1/Ï„1/\tau, due to impurities. The initial slope versus 1/Ï„1/\tau is found to depend on the superconductor contrary to Abrikosov-Gor'kov type theory. Near the critical impurity concentration TcT_{c} drops abruptly to zero. Because the potential scattering rate is generally much larger than the exchange scattering rate, magnetic impurities will also act as non-magnetic impurities as far as the TcT_{c} decrease is concerned.     Films and critical pedagogy in management education: A tourism studies context

    This article examines and critically assesses the role of films in the practice of critical pedagogy in undergraduate management education, by using tourism studies as a context. Utilizing online focus groups, we aim to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the role of films as effective pedagogical mediums in enhancing experiential approaches to learning. We argue that films play an important role in facilitating critical analyses of the phenomenon studied, illustrating and problematizing abstract concepts and ideas, as well as in facilitating students' ability to discern multiple and alternative discourses about management. Our findings highlight the role of films in context-specific critical engagement with the content being delivered and in stimulating emotionality in learning development, thereby enhancing deep approaches to learning. Emotional responses, even negative ones, prove to be critical in engaging with intellectual and critical reflection after watching films. The findings yield new and empirical insights into the pedagogic use of films in management education, thereby contributing to some of the goals of critical management studies
