The Infrared Nucleus of the Wolf-Rayet Galaxy Henize 2-10
We have obtained near-infrared images and mid-infrared spectra of the
starburst core of the dwarf Wolf-Rayet galaxy He 2-10. We find that the
infrared continuum and emission lines are concentrated in a flattened ellipse
3-4'' or 150 pc across which may show where a recent accretion event has
triggered intense star formation. The ionizing radiation from this cluster has
an effective temperature of 40,000 K, corresponding to stars, and
the starburst is years old.Comment: 17 pages Latex, 7 postscript figures, 1 postscript table, accepted to

Effects of exposure to different gaseous atmospheric mixtures on free amino acids and biogenic amines in rat brain
BĂŒchwald-Hartwig reaction applied to synthesis of new luminescent liquid crystal triarylamines derived from isoxazoles
© 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. The present work describes the synthesis and characterization of novel series of triarylamines isoxazoles (TAA) addressed to the organic photovoltaic materials. Diarylisoxazoles were synthesized by sequential [3+2] 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction between arylnitrile oxides and selected arylalkenes followed by MnO2-oxidation. Isoxazoles were coupled to diarylamines by BĂŒchwald-Hartwig reaction to afford desired compounds 6a-k. Some TAA display liquid-crystalline behaviour and UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission were analysed for all samples of TAA 6a-k
Well-Posedness And Accuracy Of The Ensemble Kalman Filter In Discrete And Continuous Time
The ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is a method for combining a dynamical model
with data in a sequential fashion. Despite its widespread use, there has been
little analysis of its theoretical properties. Many of the algorithmic
innovations associated with the filter, which are required to make a useable
algorithm in practice, are derived in an ad hoc fashion. The aim of this paper
is to initiate the development of a systematic analysis of the EnKF, in
particular to do so in the small ensemble size limit. The perspective is to
view the method as a state estimator, and not as an algorithm which
approximates the true filtering distribution. The perturbed observation version
of the algorithm is studied, without and with variance inflation. Without
variance inflation well-posedness of the filter is established; with variance
inflation accuracy of the filter, with resepct to the true signal underlying
the data, is established. The algorithm is considered in discrete time, and
also for a continuous time limit arising when observations are frequent and
subject to large noise. The underlying dynamical model, and assumptions about
it, is sufficiently general to include the Lorenz '63 and '96 models, together
with the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation on a two-dimensional torus. The
analysis is limited to the case of complete observation of the signal with
additive white noise. Numerical results are presented for the Navier-Stokes
equation on a two-dimensional torus for both complete and partial observations
of the signal with additive white noise
Notes on the Time of Sexual Maturity in Certain Unios
In the course of a recent study of the parasites of the Unionidae, the following data in regard to the time of sexual maturity in certain species, and their method of carrying their glochidia, were obtained. This primary inquiry involved the microscopical examination of the sexual glands of each individual. And in females whose gills were found swollen with the sexual product, the portion of these organs forming the marsupium and the stage of development of its contents, were also noted
Ab-initio calculation of the Gilbert damping parameter via linear response formalism
A Kubo-Greenwood-like equation for the Gilbert damping parameter is
presented that is based on the linear response formalism. Its implementation
using the fully relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) band structure method
in combination with Coherent Potential Approximation (CPA) alloy theory allows
it to be applied to a wide range of situations. This is demonstrated with
results obtained for the bcc alloy system FeCo as well as for a
series of alloys of permalloy with 5d transition metals.
To account for the thermal displacements of atoms as a scattering mechanism,
an alloy-analogy model is introduced. The corresponding calculations for Ni
correctly describe the rapid change of when small amounts of
substitutional Cu are introduced
Influence of blade aerodynamic model on prediction of helicopter rotor aeroacoustic signatures
Brownâs vorticity transport model has been used to investigate how the local blade aerodynamic model influences the quality of the prediction of the high-frequency airloads associated with bladeâvortex interactions, and thus the accuracy with which the acoustic signature of a helicopter rotor can be predicted. The vorticity transport model can accurately resolve the structure of the wake of the rotor and allows significant flexibility in the way that the blade loading can be represented. The Second Higher-Harmonic Control Aeroacoustics Rotor Test was initiated to provide experimental insight into the acoustic signature of a rotor in cases of strong bladeâvortex interaction. Predictions of two models for the local blade aerodynamics are compared with the test data. A marked improvement in accuracy of the predicted high-frequency airloads and acoustic signature is obtained when a lifting-chord model for the blade aerodynamics is used instead of a lifting-line-type approach. Errors in the amplitude and phase of the acoustic peaks are reduced, and the quality of the prediction is affected to a lesser extent by the computational resolution of the wake, with the lifting-chord model producing the best representation of the distribution of sound pressure below the rotor
Deriving Bisimulation Congruences: 2-categories vs precategories
G-relative pushouts (GRPOs) have recently been proposed by the authors as a new foundation for Leifer and Milnerâs approach to deriving labelled bisimulation congruences from reduction systems. This paper develops the theory of GRPOs further, arguing that they provide a simple and powerful basis towards a comprehensive solution. As an example, we construct GRPOs in a category of âbunches and wirings.â We then examine the approach based on Milnerâs precategories and Leiferâs functorial reactive systems, and show that it can be recast in a much simpler way into the 2-categorical theory of GRPOs
A Study of Snippet Length and Informativeness: Behaviour, Performance and User Experience
The design and presentation of a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) has been subject to much research. With many contemporary aspects of the SERP now under scrutiny, work still remains in investigating more traditional SERP components, such as the result summary. Prior studies have examined a variety of different aspects of result summaries, but in this paper we investigate the influence of result summary length on search behaviour, performance and user experience. To this end, we designed and conducted a within-subjects experiment using the TREC AQUAINT news collection with 53 participants. Using Kullback-Leibler distance as a measure of information gain, we examined result summaries of different lengths and selected four conditions where the change in information gain was the greatest: (i) title only; (ii) title plus one snippet; (iii) title plus two snippets; and (iv) title plus four snippets. Findings show that participants broadly preferred longer result summaries, as they were perceived to be more informative. However, their performance in terms of correctly identifying relevant documents was similar across all four conditions. Furthermore, while the participants felt that longer summaries were more informative, empirical observations suggest otherwise; while participants were more likely to click on relevant items given longer summaries, they also were more likely to click on non-relevant items. This shows that longer is not necessarily better, though participants perceived that to be the case - and second, they reveal a positive relationship between the length and informativeness of summaries and their attractiveness (i.e. clickthrough rates). These findings show that there are tensions between perception and performance when designing result summaries that need to be taken into account
