The southern dust pillars of the Carina Nebula

    Get PDF
We present preliminary results from a detailed study towards four previously detected bright mid-infrared sources in the southern part of the Carina Nebula: G287.73--0.92, G287.84--0.82, G287.93--0.99 and G288.07--0.80. All of these sources are located at the heads of giant dust pillars that point towards the nearby massive star cluster, Trumpler 16. It is unclear if these pillars are the prime sites for a new generation of triggered star formation or if instead they are the only remaining parts of the nebula where ongoing star fromation can take place.Comment: 2 pages, to appear in the proceedings of "Hot Star Workshop III: The Earliest Phases of Massive Star Birth" (ed. Multiple Molecular H2 Outflows in AFGL 618

We report high spatial (0.5 arcsec) and high spectral (9 km/s) resolution spectro-imaging of the 2.12 micron H2 1-0 S(1) line in the proto-planetary nebula AFGL 618 using BEAR at the CFHT. The observations reveal the presence of multiple, high-velocity, molecular outflows that align with the remarkable optical jets seen in HST images. The structure and kinematics of the outflows show how jets interact with circumstellar gas and shape the environment in which planetary nebulae form.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures. Scaling analysis of a model Hamiltonian for Ce3+^{3+} impurity in a cubic metal

We introduce various exchange interactions in a model Hamiltonian for Ce3+^{3+} ions in cubic symmetry with three configurations (f0f^0,f1f^1,f2f^2). With the impurity pseudo spin SI=1/2S_I=1/2, our Hamiltonian includes: (i) One-channel Sc=1/2S_c=1/2 Anderson model; (ii) Two-channel Sc=1/2S_c=1/2 Anderson model; (iii) An unforseen one-channel Sc=3/2S_c=3/2 Anderson model with a non-trivial fixed point; (iv) Mixing exchange interaction between the Γ6,7\Gamma_{6,7} and the Γ8\Gamma_8 conduction electron partial wave states; (v) Multiple conduction electron partial wave states. Using the third-order scaling (perturbative renormalization group) analysis, we study stability of various fixed points relevant to various exchange interactions for Ce3+^{3+} ions in cubic symmetry.Comment: 68 pages. 4 figures are available upon request from [email protected] (revised

ISO spectroscopy of compact HII regions in the Galaxy. II Ionization and elemental abundances

    Get PDF
Based on the ISO spectral catalogue of compact HII regions by Peeters et al. (2001), we present a first analysis of the hydrogen recombination and atomic fine-structure lines originated in the ionized gas. The sample consists of 34 HII regions located at galactocentric distances between Rgal = 0 and 15 kpc. The SWS HI recombination lines between 2 and 8 mum are used to estimate the extinction law at these wavelengths for 14 HII regions. An extinction in the K band between 0 and \sim 3 mag. has been derived. The fine-structure lines of N, O, Ne, S and Ar are detected in most of the sources. Most of these elements are observed in two different ionization stages probing a range in ionization potential up to 41 eV. The ISO data, by itself or combined with radio data taken from the literature, is used to derive the elemental abundances relative to hydrogen. The present data thus allow us to describe for each source its elemental abundance, its state of ionization and to constrain the properties of the ionizing star(s).Comment: Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 22 pages, 20 figures, 9 table

Small Energy Scale for Mixed-Valent Uranium Materials

We investigate a two-channel Anderson impurity model with a 5f15f^1 magnetic and a 5f25f^2 quadrupolar ground doublet, and a 5f25f^2 excited triplet. Using the numerical renormalization group method, we find a crossover to a non-Fermi liquid state below a temperature TT^* varying as the 5f25f^2 triplet-doublet splitting to the 7/2 power. To within numerical accuracy, the non-linear magnetic susceptibility and the 5f15f^1 contribution to the linear susceptibility are given by universal one-parameter scaling functions. These results may explain UBe13_{13} as mixed valent with a small crossover scale TT^*.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let

Robust pricing and hedging of double no-touch options

Double no-touch options, contracts which pay out a fixed amount provided an underlying asset remains within a given interval, are commonly traded, particularly in FX markets. In this work, we establish model-free bounds on the price of these options based on the prices of more liquidly traded options (call and digital call options). Key steps are the construction of super- and sub-hedging strategies to establish the bounds, and the use of Skorokhod embedding techniques to show the bounds are the best possible. In addition to establishing rigorous bounds, we consider carefully what is meant by arbitrage in settings where there is no {\it a priori} known probability measure. We discuss two natural extensions of the notion of arbitrage, weak arbitrage and weak free lunch with vanishing risk, which are needed to establish equivalence between the lack of arbitrage and the existence of a market model.Comment: 32 pages, 5 figure

Solution of the Two-Channel Anderson Impurity Model - Implications for the Heavy Fermion UBe13_{13} -

We solve the two-channel Anderson impurity model using the Bethe-Ansatz. We determine the ground state and derive the thermodynamics, obtaining the impurity entropy and specific heat over the full range of temperature. We show that the low temperature physics is given by a line of fixed points decribing a two-channel non Fermi liquid behavior in the integral valence regime associated with moment formation as well as in the mixed valence regime where no moment forms. We discuss relevance for the theory of UBe13_{13}.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, (to be published in PRL
