    Diffraction-contrast imaging of cold atoms

    We consider the inverse problem of in-line holography, applied to minimally-destructive imaging of cold atom clouds. Absorption imaging near-resonance provides a simple, but destructive measurement of atom column density. Imaging off resonance greatly reduces heating, and sequential images may be taken. Under the conditions required for off-resonant imaging, the generally-intractable inverse problem may be linearized.     Despite significant theoretical efforts, the identification of the active sites for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) to specific chemical products has remained elusive. This is partially due to insufficient experimental data gathered on clean and atomically well-ordered electrode surfaces. Here, ultrahigh vacuum based preparation methods and surface science characterization techniques are used together with gas chromatography to demonstrate that subtle changes in the preparation of well-oriented Cu(100) and Cu(111) single crystal surfaces drastically affect their CO2RR selectivity. Copper single crystals with clean, flat, and atomically ordered surfaces are theoretically predicted to yield hydrocarbons. However, these were found experimentally to favour the production of H2. Only when roughness and defects are introduced, for example through an electrochemical etchingor a plasmatreatment, significant amounts of hydrocarbons are generated. These results clearly indicate that structural and morphological effects are the key factors determining the catalytic selectivity of CO2RR

    Risk of major depressive disorder among older persons living in HIV-endemic central and southwestern Uganda.

    : Major depressive disorder (MDD) is projected to become the second most common cause of disability by 2020 calling for a better understanding its antecedents across the lifespan and in diverse socio-cultural settings. In this paper we describe the risk factors of MDD among older people (50 years +) living in HIV-endemic central and southwestern Uganda. A cross-sectional study was undertaken among 471 respondents (50 years +) participating in the Wellbeing of Older People's Study cohort of the MRC/UVRI Uganda research Unit on AIDS in Uganda. Participants were from five strata: HIV negative, HIV positive on ART, HIV positive not on ART, having an adult child on ART, and having an adult child who died of HIV. Overall MDD prevalence was 9.2% (95% CI 6.7-12.2%) with a prevalence among males of 7.4% (95% CI 4.0-12.3%) and females of 10.3% (95% CI 7.0-14.3%). Factors significantly associated with MDD included: declining socio-economic status, increasing disability scores, decreasing mean grip strength, reported back pain, and not having hypertension. Marginally associated with MDD was being HIV infected and not on ART.<br/

    Anharmonic Decay of Vibrational States in Amorphous Silicon

    Anharmonic decay rates are calculated for a realistic atomic model of amorphous silicon. The results show that the vibrational states decay on picosecond timescales and follow the two-mode density of states, similar to crystalline silicon, but somewhat faster.     The effect of long-term and decadal climate and hydrology variations on estuarine marsh dynamics: An identifying case study from the Río de la Plata

    The vertical growth of coastal wetlands is known to primarily be controlled by local tidal range and sediment availability as well as the occurrence of storm events. In estuaries, sediment availability additionally depends on riverine sediment input, the effect of which may be more pronounced in some parts of the estuary, thereby introducing a distinct spatial pattern that depends on the estuary's shape as well as the riverine sediment input and the hydro-meteorological regime. In the present study, we investigate how estuarine marshes along the whole Río de la Plata (RdlP) are affected by decadal and long-term variations in river discharge and storm activity. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), in this context, appears to introduce a pronounced decadal variability on sediment loads brought into the RdlP. Based on 15 sediment cores, recovered along the RdlP and adjacent Atlantic coast, vertical marsh growth rates were studied using radionuclide dating (210Pb and 137Cs) and grain size distributions. By comparing these sedimentological records with historic river discharge and storm surge data, we spatially interpret the relative importance of temporal variations in river discharge and storm activity on estuarine marsh growth. By delivering the first estimates for vertical growth rates of the RdlP marshes, we conclude that with average vertical marsh growth rates between 0.4 and 2.6 cm year− 1, the RdlP marshes are highly resilient against drowning under present and future sea-level rise (SLR) conditions.     Integrated Structure and Semantics for Reo Connectors and Petri Nets

    In this paper, we present an integrated structural and behavioral model of Reo connectors and Petri nets, allowing a direct comparison of the two concurrency models. For this purpose, we introduce a notion of connectors which consist of a number of interconnected, user-defined primitives with fixed behavior. While the structure of connectors resembles hypergraphs, their semantics is given in terms of so-called port automata. We define both models in a categorical setting where composition operations can be elegantly defined and integrated. Specifically, we formalize structural gluings of connectors as pushouts, and joins of port automata as pullbacks. We then define a semantical functor from the connector to the port automata category which preserves this composition. We further show how to encode Reo connectors and Petri nets into this model and indicate applications to dynamic reconfigurations modeled using double pushout graph transformation

    Measures used to assess impact of providing care among informal caregivers of persons with stroke, spinal cord injury, or amputation:a systematic review

    Purpose: (1) To identify measures used to evaluate the impact of caregiving among caregivers of persons with stroke, spinal cord injury, and amputation; and (2) to systematically evaluate their clinimetric properties reported in validation studies. Materials and methods: Two separate systematic reviews (Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Pubmed/Medline) were conducted. COSMIN guidelines were used to assess clinimetric properties and methodological quality of studies. Results: (1) 154 studies published between 2008 and May 2019 were included, in which 48 measures were used, mostly describing negative impact. Thirty measures were used only once and not further described. (2) In general, structural validity, internal consistency, and hypothesis testing were often investigated. Reliability, cross-cultural and criterion validity to a lesser extent, and scale development and content validity were rarely described. Tests of measurement error and responsiveness were exceptional. Most supporting evidence was found for the Zarit Burden Interview Short Form, Caregiver Burden Scale and Positive Aspects of Caregiving Questionnaire. Conclusions: There is a wide variety of impact of caregiving measures. The present study provided a detailed overview of what is known about clinimetric characteristics of 18 different measures repeatedly used in research. The overview provides clinicians a guidance of appropriate measure selection. PROSPERO registration: CRD4201809479

    Phobos DTM and Coordinate Refinement for Phobos-Grunt Mission Support.

    Images obtained by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) during recent Phobos flybys were used to study the proposed new landing site area of the Russian Phobos-Grunt mission, scheduled for launch in 2011 [1]. From the stereo images (resolution of up to 4.4 m/pixel), a digital terrain model (DTM) with a lateral resolution of 100 m per pixel and a relative point accuracy of ±15 m, was determined. Images and DTM were registered to the established Phobos control point network [7]. A map of the landing site area was produced enabling mission planers and scientists to extract accurate body-fixed coordinates of features in the Phobos Grunt landing site area
