The Strehl Ratio in Adaptive Optics Images: Statistics and Estimation
Statistical properties of the intensity in adaptive optics images are usually
modeled with a Rician distribution. We study the central point of the image,
where this model is inappropriate for high to very high correction levels. The
central point is an important problem because it gives the Strehl ratio
distribution. We show that the central point distribution can be modeled using

For a microscopic model of a Josephson junction the normal coordinates of the
two junction Goldstone bosons are constructed and their dynamical spectrum is
computed. The explicit dependence on the phase difference of the two

Energy loss mechanism for suspended micro- and nanoresonators due to the Casimir force
A so far not considered energy loss mechanism in suspended micro- and
nanoresonators due to noncontact acoustical energy loss is investigated
theoretically. The mechanism consists on the conversion of the mechanical
energy from the vibratory motion of the resonator into acoustic waves on large
nearby structures, such as the substrate, due to the coupling between the
resonator and those structures resulting from the Casimir force acting over the
separation gaps. Analytical expressions for the resulting quality factor Q for
cantilever and bridge micro- and nanoresonators in close proximity to an
underlying substrate are derived and the relevance of the mechanism is
investigated, demonstrating its importance when nanometric gaps are involved
Internal-strain mediated coupling between polar Bi and magnetic Mn ions in the defect-free quadruple-perovskite BiMnMnO
By means of neutron powder diffraction, we investigated the effect of the
polar Bi ion on the magnetic ordering of the Mn ions in
BiMnMnO, the counterpart with \textit{quadruple} perovskite
structure of the \textit{simple} perovskite BiMnO. The data are consistent
with a \textit{noncentrosymmetric} spacegroup which contrasts the
\textit{centrosymmetric} one previously reported for the isovalent and
isomorphic compound LaMnMnO, which gives evidence of a
Bi-induced polarization of the lattice. At low temperature, the two
Mn sublattices of the and sites order antiferromagnetically
(AFM) in an independent manner at 25 and 55 K, similarly to the case of
LaMnMnO. However, both magnetic structures of
BiMnMnO radically differ from those of LaMnMnO.
In BiMnMnO the moments of the sites form
an anti-body AFM structure, whilst the moments \textbf{M} of the
sites result from a large and \textit{uniform} modulation along the b-axis of the moments \textbf{M} in the
-plane. The modulation is strikingly correlated with the displacements of
the Mn ions induced by the Bi ions. Our analysis unveils a strong
magnetoelastic coupling between the internal strain created by the Bi
ions and the moment of the Mn ions in the sites. This is ascribed to
the high symmetry of the oxygen sites and to the absence of oxygen defects, two
characteristics of quadruple perovskites not found in simple ones, which
prevent the release of the Bi-induced strain through distortions or
disorder. This demonstrates the possibility of a large magnetoelectric coupling
in proper ferroelectrics and suggests a novel concept of internal strain

KATP Channel Openers Have Opposite Effects on Mitochondrial Respiration Under Different Energetic Conditions
Mitochondrial (m) KATP channel opening has been implicated in triggering cardiac preconditioning. Its consequence on mitochondrial respiration, however, remains unclear. We investigated the effects of two different KATP channel openers and antagonists on mitochondrial respiration under two different energetic conditions. Oxygen consumption was measured for complex I (pyruvate/malate) or complex II (succinate with rotenone) substrates in mitochondria from fresh guinea pig hearts. One of two mKATP channel openers, pinacidil or diazoxide, was given before adenosine diphosphate in the absence or presence of an mKATP channel antagonist, glibenclamide or 5-hydroxydecanoate. Without ATP synthase inhibition, both mKATP channel openers differentially attenuated mitochondrial respiration. Neither mKATP channel antagonist abolished these effects. When ATP synthase was inhibited by oligomycin to decrease [ATP], both mKATP channel openers accelerated respiration for both substrate groups. This was abolished by mKATP channel blockade. Thus, under energetically more physiological conditions, the main effect of mKATP channel openers on mitochondrial respiration is differential inhibition independent of mKATP channel opening. In contrast, under energetically less physiological conditions, mKATP channel opening can be evidenced by accelerated respiration and blockade by antagonists. Therefore, the effects of mKATP channel openers on mitochondrial function likely depend on the experimental conditions and the cell\u27s underlying energetic state
Power Dependent Lineshape Corrections for Quantitative Spectroscopy
The Voigt profile - a convolution of a Gaussian and a Lorentzian - accurately
describes the absorption lines of atomic and molecular gases at low probe
powers. Fitting such to experimental spectra yields both the Lorentzian natural
linewidth and the Gaussian Doppler broadening. However, as the probe power
increases saturation effects introduce spurious power dependence into the
fitted Doppler width. Using a simple atomic model, we calculate power-dependent
corrections to the Voigt profile, which are parametrized by the Gaussian
Doppler width, the Lorentzian natural linewidth, and the optical depth. We show
numerically and experimentally that including the correction term substantially
reduces the spurious power dependence in the fitted Gaussian width.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
