    Comparative analysis of Iron Age bronze archaeological objects from a Picenum necropolis of Centre Italy with Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis

    An archaeological area from the 8th and 7th centuries B.C. has been recently discovered during a rescue excavation near Matelica site (Marche Region, Italy) in the period 1994-2005. Out of the treasures found in the graves, 18 bronze objects have been chosen for Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA) at the Budapest Research Reactor (BRR), selected from the 7th century B.C. archaeological founds of Matelica and Fabriano sites. Various investigations, already performed in the same field, have confirmed the applicability of the considered technique and the feasibility of the proposed experiment. Besides determining the major components of the analyzed fragments, some trace elements, such as Sb, As and Ag, have also been identified. The compositions of the different samples have been also compared, in order to gain information regarding possible workshops and provenance. The comparative analysis will be useful, moreover, to establish an eventual classification according to the chemical composition. The obtained results are complementary to those already achieved for the considered objects, including atomic absorption, atomic emission and neutron diffraction

    Nursing student attitudes towards older people: validity and reliability of the Italian version of the Kogan Attitudes towards Older People scale

    Aim. This paper reports a study testing the validity and reliability of the Italian version of the Kogan Attitude towards Older People scale. Background. Nursing students’ attitudes towards older people can affect their preference for working with them. One of the most common instruments used to assess these attitudes is the Kogan Attitude towards Older People scale. Previous validation studies performed on college students internationally have demonstrated good reliability and validity. The psychometric properties of the Italian version have not yet been tested. Design. A cross-sectional, descriptive study. Method. The study was conducted from March–June 2010 with a convenience sample of nursing students attending two Italian universities. Reliability was evaluated using internal consistency and item-to-total correlation. Content and construct validity were evaluated using a content validity index and principal factor analysis. Results. A total of 1637 nursing students participated in the study. Two factors were extracted from the factor analysis: prejudice describing a negative disposition and appreciation indicating a favourable feeling and opinion towards older people. Conclusion. The Kogan Attitude towards Older People scale applied to Italian nursing students exhibited good internal consistency. The two-dimensional construct of the scale was congruent with some, but not all, results of previous studies due to methodological differences among the studies. Based on the study findings, the scale can be recommended for future research studies in Italy including use as pre/post-test measurement associated with nursing education programmes

    Patient education is recognized as a central component of heart failure care and reduces hospital readmissions. Nurses have an important role in providing patient education and modifying self-care behaviors. The aim of this article is to examine characteristics of educational interventions for heart failure patients, their measured outcomes and the role of nurses in providing education. We conducted a literature review of the last 10 years and considered 30 articles. Multisession motivational interventions, repeated over time and with different follow-up interventions seem to produce the best results. However, some aspects remain controversial

    Monitoring of masonry historical constructions: 10 years of static monitoring of the world's largest oval dome

    This paper presents the analyses conducted on the data acquired by the monitoring system of the “Regina Montis Regalis” Basilica of Vicoforte (Italy) in the decade 2004–2014. The Basilica is a building of great historical, architectural, and structural significance, owing its fame to its impressive masonry oval dome, the world's largest of this shape (internal axes of 37.23 by 24.89 m). The dome-drum system of the Basilica has suffered over the years of significant structural problems, partly due to the settlements of the building induced progressively by newly built masses and also to the sliding of the underground. In 1983, concerns over the severe settlements and cracking phenomena affecting the structure prompted the decision to undertake strengthening interventions. A special hooping system, consisting of 56 tie bars, placed around the oval perimeter of the dome, was thus conceived to limit the crack opening. The monitoring system of the Basilica installed in the early 1980s underwent several renovations, and in 2004, its acquisition procedure was automatized. One hundred twelve instruments, consisting of temperature sensors, crackmeters, load cells, pressure cells, wire gauges, hygrometer, piezometers, and hydrometer, are currently installed on the Basilica. This study is primarily focused on data acquired by the crackmeters, the extensometers along the main axes of dome, and the load cells placed at the ends of the tie bars. The main aim of the reported analysis is to evaluate the possible progression of the cracks on the Basilica, and the structural performance of the strengthening interventions put in place in 1985–1987

    Lavagnone is a lacustrine basin, today turned into a peat bog, which was continuously settled for about 1,000 years during the Early, Middle and Late Bronze Ages. Since 1991 research has been carried out under the supervision of R. C. de Marinis (Universit\ue0 degli Studi di Milano) in four different areas of the basin in order to reconstruct the features of the settlement and the changes that occurred over the course of time. Palynological and palaeobotanical analyses, taking place since 2002 in cooperation with CNR-IDPA (Milano), are focused on determining the palaeoenvironmental manifestation, both then and now, of the anthropogenic exploitation of the basin

    In the present work we report an example application of time-of-flight neutron diffraction for the non-destructive characterisation of ancient bronzes. A Villanovan sword tightly joined to its scabbard by corrosion has been investigated. Data on alloy composition of the different parts and information about the manufacturing techniques have been successfully achieved.     Photonic integrated reconfigurable linear processors as neural network accelerators

    Reconfigurable linear optical processors can be used to perform linear transformations and are instrumental in effectively computing matrix–vector multiplications required in each neural network layer. In this paper, we characterize and compare two thermally tuned photonic integrated processors realized in silicon-on-insulator and silicon nitride platforms suited for extracting feature maps in convolutional neural networks. The reduction in bit resolution when crossing the processor is mainly due to optical losses, in the range 2.3–3.3 for the silicon-on-insulator chip and in the range 1.3–2.4 for the silicon nitride chip. However, the lower extinction ratio of Mach–Zehnder elements in the latter platform limits their expressivity (i.e., the capacity to implement any transformation) to 75%, compared to 97% of the former. Finally, the silicon-on-insulator processor outperforms the silicon nitride one in terms of footprint and energy efficiency
