    Quantum simulation of an extra dimension

    We present a general strategy to simulate a D+1-dimensional quantum system using a D-dimensional one. We analyze in detail a feasible implementation of our scheme using optical lattice technology. The simplest non-trivial realization of a fourth dimension corresponds to the creation of a bivolume geometry.     the influence of pregnancy and the beginning of lactation on pelage traits in cashmere goats

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pregnancy followed by the beginning of lactation on fibre traits incashmere goats. Two groups of cashmere-bearing goats aged between 2-3 years were used. The control group (A) included12 non-lactating, non-pregnant subjects. The experimental group (B) included 12 goats mated during the first weekof June, in order to have pregnancy and the beginning of lactation coincide with the period when cashmere normallygrows. As expected, Liveweight significantly varied in Group B during the last two months of pregnancy, when foetalgrowth reaches its maximum, and following delivery. Hair patch weight, because of the continuous growth of primary andsecondary fibres, increased significantly during the trial (P<0.001). The physiological status considered negatively affected(P<0.05) the total mean growth rate of cashmere fibres and, as a result, their length. Cashmere daily growth ratevalues varied significantly (P<0.05) throughout the experiment, while the effect of the physiological status was notedonly in November – December. Furthermore, this parameter also seems to be influenced by climatic factors and, in particular,environmental temperature, as shown by the negative correlation (r = - 0.28; P<0.05) between cashmere dailygrowth rate and environmental temperature. Guard hair length and growth rate did not differ between the two groups,however, they were influenced by time. Cashmere yield and cashmere production were lower in group B (P<0.05). Nodifferences between groups were observed for cashmere diameter. Overall, pregnancy and the consequent period of lactationnegatively influenced cashmere rather than guard hair fibres. These negative effects were noted in quantitativeterms as yield and production dropped by 37% and 43%, respectively. We hypothesise that the complete overlap of pregnancyand lactation with the period of cashmere growth reduced the number of secondary active follicles and their degreeof activity and caused an increase in competition for the partitioning of nutrients between hair follicles and the graviduterus, first, and then the mammary gland, later

    Pursuing positionality in design

    In the context of a complex social matrix that we find ourselves in, described by the continuous flux of power relations and asymmetries; design as a practice, their practitioners and researchers carry the responsibility in the mindful shaping of the future. As mediators within the design system, designers carry the conversation between the design program, a hypothesis, the stakeholders, and the effects of the resulting conclusions. Within their practice and the reflexive process upon it, designers can question, critique, and dismantle oppressive systems of status quo perpetuation. A first approach to a critical dialogue in design suggests reviewing one’s identity to discover possible privileges and biases. This is done through the revision of positionality as a conscious way of understanding who we are regarding an other; identity remains fundamental in the axiological description of our ethical values, preconceptions, and the essence of our being, modifying and steering our ways of knowing and doing. Defining positionality impacts the design process and research, affecting methodologies and findings. This manuscript searches to display the nuances of design and the relevance of achieving the situated conception of our identity, i.e. positionality, through reflexivity. Intersecting designerly research and critical social studies to analyse the role of the self enables reflexivity. Giving a comprehensive overview of how to achieve this by overlapping Decolonial theory and Pluriverse, Thirdwave feminist theories such as Intersectionality, Standpoint theory, and Critical race theory; research methodologies such as Autoethnography and Participatory action research are presented under this theoretical framework

    Hemocyte types and some plasmatic properties of two edible crabs Cancer borealis and Cancer pagurus

    Cancer pagurus and Cancer borealis and are edible crabs produced by economically relevant aquaculture. In this study the hemocytes and some plasmatic parameters of Cancer borealis and Cancer pagurus were examined. The cell features of the hemocytes were observed using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Granulocytes, semigranulocytes and hyalinocytes were mainly identified on the basis of size, presence/absence and quantity of the cytoplasmic granules and the nucleus-to-citoplasma (N/C) ratio. SEM observations were useful for disclosing the surface features of these cells, and the same characteristics were found in both crab species. A smooth surface distinguishes elongated hyalinocytes and a rough texture the irregular surface of spherical/ovoid granular cells. Total (THC) and differential hemocyte counts (DHC) were performed, and the differences between the two crab species were disclosed.     Synthetic gauge fields in synthetic dimensions

    We describe a simple technique for generating a cold-atom lattice pierced by a uniform magnetic field. Our method is to extend a one-dimensional optical lattice into the "dimension" provided by the internal atomic degrees of freedom, yielding a synthetic 2D lattice. Suitable laser-coupling between these internal states leads to a uniform magnetic flux within the 2D lattice.
