    Hygroscopic behavior of lyophilized bovine pericardium

    Hygroscopic behavior of lyophilized products can be visualized starting from the construction of Moisture Sorption Isotherms (MSI). Such curves show the relationship between the maximum amount of absorbed water for a substance, with the equilibrium vapor pressure or water activity, at a given constant temperature. Aimed to study later the reconstitution and use of biological materials of lyophilized bovine pericardium, it was plot adsorption and desorption curves, at temperatures of 15, 25 and 35°C, on HydrosorbTM 1000 - water vapor sorption analyzer. The results showed MSI type II, according BET classification, typical reaction of hydrophilic surfaces with monolayer and multilayer formation. Histerese phenomenon was observed during the whole MSI interval. The mathematical models of BET and GAB fitted well the experimental data and allowed the water monolayer calculation, estimate the critical level of residual moisture that assures more stability to the product.O comportamento higroscópico de produtos desidratados pode ser visualizado a partir da construção de curvas denominadas Isotermas de Sorção de Umidade (ISU). Esse tipo de curva relaciona a quantidade máxima de água absorvida por uma substância, com a pressão de vapor de equilíbrio ou a atividade de água, numa dada temperatura mantida constante. Com o objetivo de estudar posteriormente a reconstituição, material de embalagem e utilização de implantes feitos a partir de pericárdio bovino liofilizado, foram traçadas curvas de adsorção e dessorção de umidade em um analisador de sorção de vapor de água, HydrosorbTM 1000, nas temperaturas de 15, 25 e 35°C. Os resultados obtidos mostraram ISU tendendo ao tipo II, segundo a classificação de BET, reação típica de superfícies hidrofílicas com formação de monocamada e multicamadas. O fenômeno da histerese foi observado durante todo o intervalo da ISU. Os modelos matemáticos de Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) e Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) ajustaram bem os dados experimentais permitindo o cálculo do valor monomolecular, importante para a estimativa do nível crítico de umidade residual que confere maior estabilidade de armazenamento ao produto.31332

    Study of Gamma Ray Burst Binary Progenitors

    Recently much work in studying Gamma-Ray Burst has been devoted to revealing the nature of outburst mechanism and studies of GRB afterglows. These issues have also been closely followed by the quest for identifying GRB progenitors. In this paper we consider the proposed binary star progenitors of GRBs: white dwarf neutron star binaries, white dwarf black hole binaries, helium core neutron star mergers, helium core black hole mergers, double neutron stars and neutron star black hole binaries. Using population synthesis methods we calculate merger rates of these binary progenitors and we compare them to the observed BATSE GRB rate. We also calculate the distribution of merger sites around host galaxies and compare them to the observed locations of GRB afterglows with respect to their hosts. We find that the rates of binary GRB progenitors in our standard model are lower than the observed GRB rates if GRBs are highly collimated. However, the uncertainty in the population synthesis results is too large to make this a firm conclusion. Although some observational signatures seem to point to collapsars as progenitors of long GRBs, we find that mergers of WD-NS, He-NS, He-BH, and NS-NS systems also trace the star formation regions of their host galaxies, as it is observed for long GRBs. We also speculate about possible progenitors of short-duration GRBs. For these, the most likely candidates are still mergers of compact objects. We find that the locations NS-NS and NS-BH mergers with respect to their hosts are significantly different. This may allow to distinguish between these two progenitor models, once current and near future missions, such as HETE-II or SWIFT, measure the locations of short GRBs.Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Ap

    The Anthropocene monument:on relating geological and human time

    In the Parthenon frieze, the time of mortals and the time of gods seem to merge. Dipesh Chakrabarty has argued that with the advent of the Anthropocene the times of human history and of the Earth are similarly coming together. Are humans entering the ‘monumental time’ of the Earth, to stand alongside the Olympian gods of the other geological forces? In this paper I first look at the cultural shifts leading to the modern idea of separate human and Earth histories. I examine the changing use of monuments to mediate between human and other temporalities. I explore the use of ‘stratigraphic sections’ as natural monuments to mark transitions between the major time units of Earth history, and the erection of intentional monuments nearby. I suggest that the Anthropocene, as a geological epoch-in-the-making, may challenge the whole system of monumental semiotics used to stabilise our way of thinking about deep time

    The Effect of Selenium Supplementation in the Prevention of DNA Damage in White Blood Cells of Hemodialyzed Patients: A Pilot Study

    Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have an increased incidence of cancer. It is well known that long periods of hemodialysis (HD) treatment are linked to DNA damage due to oxidative stress. In this study, we examined the effect of selenium (Se) supplementation to CKD patients on HD on the prevention of oxidative DNA damage in white blood cells. Blood samples were drawn from 42 CKD patients on HD (at the beginning of the study and after 1 and 3 months) and from 30 healthy controls. Twenty-two patients were supplemented with 200 μg Se (as Se-rich yeast) per day and 20 with placebo (baker's yeast) for 3 months. Se concentration in plasma and DNA damage in white blood cells expressed as the tail moment, including single-strand breaks (SSB) and oxidative bases lesion in DNA, using formamidopyrimidine glycosylase (FPG), were measured. Se concentration in patients was significantly lower than in healthy subjects (P < 0.0001) and increased significantly after 3 months of Se supplementation (P < 0.0001). Tail moment (SSB) in patients before the study was three times higher than in healthy subjects (P < 0.01). After 3 months of Se supplementation, it decreased significantly (P < 0.01) and was about 16% lower than in healthy subjects. The oxidative bases lesion in DNA (tail moment, FPG) of HD patients at the beginning of the study was significantly higher (P < 0.01) compared with controls, and 3 months after Se supplementation it was 2.6 times lower than in controls (P < 0.01). No changes in tail moment was observed in the placebo group. In conclusion, our study shows that in CKD patients on HD, DNA damage in white blood cells is higher than in healthy controls, and Se supplementation prevents the damage of DNA
