Mean-Field Approximation to the Master Equation for Sympathetic Cooling of Trapped Bosons
We use the mean-field approximation to simplify the master equation for
sympathetic cooling of Bosons. For the mean single-particle occupation numbers,
this approach yields the same equations as the factorization assumption
introduced in an erlier paper. The stationary or equilibrium solution of the
resulting master equation for the one-body density matrix shows that the
mean-field approximation breaks down whenever the fraction of condensate Bosons
exceeds ten percent or so of the total. Using group-theoretical methods, we
also solve the time-dependent master equation for the one-body density matrix.
Given the time dependence of the mean single-particle occupation numbers, this
solution is obtained by quadratures. It tends asymptotically towards the
equilibrium solution.Comment: submitted to PR

These applications rely on the capability of these microorganisms to perform extracellular electron transfer, a mechanism that allows the bacteria to transfer electrons to the cell’s exterior by establishing functional interfaces between different multiheme cytochromes at the inner membrane, periplasmic space, and outer membrane. The multiheme cytochrome CbcL from Geobacter sulfurreducens is associated to the inner membrane and plays an essential role in the transfer of electrons to final electron acceptors with a low redox potential, as Fe(III) oxides and electrodes poised at −100 mV. CbcL has a transmembranar di-heme b-type cytochrome domain with six helices, linked to a periplasmic cytochrome domain with nine c-type heme groups. The complementary usage of ultraviolet-visible, circular dichroism and nuclear magnetic resonance permitted the structural and functional characterization of CbcL’s periplasmic domain. The protein was found to have a high percentage of disordered regions and its nine hemes are low-spin and all coordinated by two histidine residues. The apparent midpoint reduction potential of the CbcL periplasmic domain was determined, suggesting a thermodynamically favorable transfer of electrons to the putative redox partner in the periplasm − the triheme cytochrome PpcA. The establishment of a redox complex between the two proteins was confirmed by probing the electron transfer reaction and the molecular interactions between CbcL and PpcA. The results obtained show for the first time how electrons are injected into the periplasm of Geobacter sulfurreducens for subsequent transfer to the cell’s exterior.publishersversionpublishe
Diels-alder cycloaddition in the synthesis of 1-azafagomine, analogs, and derivatives as glycosidase inhibitors
This comprehensive review deals with the synthesis of 1-azafagomine, analogs, and derivatives having the Diels-Alder cycloaddition as the key step. Most of the compounds referred are racemic or have been resolved by lipase transesterification. There are two asymmetric cycloadditions leading to 1-azafagomine or to an analog. In one case both enantiomers of 1-azafagomine were prepared together with a pair of derivatives. The study comprises glycosidase inhibition studies of the target compounds to a set of glycosidic enzymes, and evidenced molecular features that enhance or diminish their activity as glycosidase inhibitors
Modelling the Recoherence of Mesoscopic Superpositions in Dissipative Environments
A model is presented to describe the recently proposed experiment (J.
Raimond,
M. Brune and S. Haroche Phys. Rev. Lett {\bf 79}, 1964 (1997)) where a
mesoscopic superposition of radiation states is prepared in a high-Q cavity
which is coupled to a similar resonator. The dynamical coherence loss of such
state in the absence of dissipation is reversible and can in principle be
observed. We show how this picture is modified due to the presence of the
environmental couplings. Analytical expressions for the experimental
conditional probabilities and the linear entropy are given. We conclude that
the phenomenon can still be observed provided the ratio between the damping
constant and the inter-cavities coupling does not exceed about a few percent.
This observation is favored for superpositions of states with large overlap.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure
Differential response to dexamethasone on the TXB2 release in guinea-pig alveolar macrophages induced by zymosan and cytokines
Glucocorticosteroids reduce the production of inflammatory mediators but this effect may depend on the stimulus. We have compared the time course of the effect of dexamethasone on the thromboxane B2 (TXB2) release induced by cytokine stimulation and zymosan in guinea-pig alveolar macrophages. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and opsonized zymosan (OZ), all stimulate TXB2 release. High concentrations of dexamethasone (1–10 μM) inhibit the TXB2 production induced by both cytokines and OZ, but the time course of this response is different. Four hours of incubation with dexamethasone reduce the basal
TXB2 release and that induced by IL-1β and TNF-α, but do not modify the TXB2 release induced by OZ. However, this stimulus was reduced after 24 h incubation. Our results suggest that the antiinflammatory activity of glucocorticosteroids shows some dependence on stimulus and, therefore, may have more than one mechanism involved
The Importance of Multiheme Cytochromes
Publisher Copyright:
Copyright: © 2022 The Author(s)Extracellular electron transfer is a key metabolic process of many organisms that enables them to exchange electrons with extracellular electron donors/acceptors. The discovery of organisms with these abilities and the understanding of their electron transfer processes has become a priority for the scientific and industrial community, given the growing interest on the use of these organisms in sustainable biotechnological processes. For example, in bioelectrochemical systems electrochemical active organisms can exchange electrons with an electrode, allowing the production of energy and added-value compounds, among other processes. In these systems, electrochemical active organisms exchange electrons with an electrode through direct or indirect mechanisms, using, in most cases, multiheme cytochromes. In numerous electroactive organisms, these proteins form a conductive pathway that allows electrons produced from cellular metabolism to be transferred across the cell surface for the reduction of an electrode, or vice-versa. Here, the mechanisms by which the most promising electroactive bacteria perform extracellular electron transfer will be reviewed, emphasizing the proteins involved in these pathways. The ability of some of the organisms to perform bidirectional electron transfer and the pathways used will also be highlighted.publishersversionpublishe
Magnetic phase transitions in Gd64Sc36 studied using non-contact ultrasonics
The speed and attenuation of ultrasound propagation can be used to determine material properties and identify phase transitions. Standard ultrasonic contact techniques are not always convenient due to the necessity of using couplant; however, recently reliable non-contact ultrasonic techniques involving electromagnetic generation and detection of ultrasound with electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) have been developed for use on electrically conducting and/or magnetic materials. We present a detailed study of magnetic phase transitions in a single crystal sample of Gd64Sc36 magnetic alloy using contact and non-contact ultrasonic techniques for two orientations of external magnetic field. Phase diagrams are constructed based on measurements of elastic constant C33, the attenuation and the efficiency of generation when using an EMAT. The EMATs are shown to provide additional information related to the magnetic phase transitions in the studied sample, and results identify a conical helix phase in Gd64Sc36 in the magnetic field orientation
