Investigation of Hamamatsu H8500 phototubes as single photon detectors

We have investigated the response of a significant sample of Hamamatsu H8500 MultiAnode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMTs) as single photon detectors, in view of their use in a ring imaging Cherenkov counter for the CLAS12 spectrometer at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For this, a laser working at 407.2nm wavelength was employed. The sample is divided equally into standard window type, with a spectral response in the visible light region, and UV-enhanced window type MAPMTs. The studies confirm the suitability of these MAPMTs for single photon detection in such a Cherenkov imaging application

7 TUE

A microscopic approach to critical phenomena at interfaces: an application to complete wetting in the Ising model

We study how the formalism of the Hierarchical Reference Theory (HRT) can be extended to inhomogeneous systems. HRT is a liquid state theory which implements the basic ideas of Wilson momentum shell renormalization group (RG) to microscopic Hamiltonians. In the case of homogeneous systems, HRT provides accurate results even in the critical region, where it reproduces scaling and non-classical critical exponents. We applied the HRT to study wetting critical phenomena in a planar geometry. Our formalism avoids the explicit definition of effective surface Hamiltonians but leads, close to the wetting transition, to the same renormalization group equation already studied by RG techiques. However, HRT also provides information on the non universal quantities because it does not require any preliminary coarse graining procedure. A simple approximation to the infinite HRT set of equations is discussed. The HRT evolution equation for the surface free energy is numerically integrated in a semi-infinite three-dimensional Ising model and the complete wetting phase transition is analyzed. A renormalization of the adsorption critical amplitude and of the wetting parameter is observed. Our results are compared to available Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: To be published in Phy. Rev.

Omentum flap as a spacer before carbon ion radiotherapy for gynecological recurrences. A technical note

    Get PDF
Re-irradiation of pelvic recurrent gynecological cancer is a challenge due to the proximity of high-radiation-sensitive organs, such as the bowel and the urinary tract. Hadrontherapy for re-irradiation emerges as a safe and effective treatment with a mild rate of morbidity of surrounding normal tissue. To improve the dose to the tumor, a prophylactic displacement of organs at risk is needed, and a multidisciplinary approach is recommended. In this technical note, we report a surgical technique of omentum spacer placement for patients enrolled for carbon ion radiotherapy as re-irradiation for recurrent gynecological tumors. Use of heat pipes to improve temperature performance of a chilled refrigerated display cabinet

A heat pipe was used to provide cooling to the front of the shelf of a glass door refrigerated display cabinet. The heat pipe reduced the core temperature of the test pack above it by 0.2 K. A thermal imaging camera was used to ascertain boundary conditions for a CFD model which then predicted a reduction in the core temperature of the test pack above the heat pipe by 0.5 K The reason for the limited benefit of the heat pipe measured and predicted was that the temperature of the shelf below the front pack was only slightly higher than the heat pipe cooling it. Using the thermal imaging camera and the CFD model, the predictions were extended to an open fronted cabinet. The heat pipe was predicted to reduce the core temperature of the test pack above it by 1.7 K Heat pipes were shown to be of more benefit in open fronted than glass door cabinets

VULVAR HISTOPATHOLOGICAL AND IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL CHANGES IN PATIENTS WITH PRIMARY SJÖGREN SYNDROME

Background: Primary Sjogren Syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disease mostly affecting women, characterized by a lymphocyte-mediated infiltration and destruction of several exocrine glands, which causes mucosal dryness. Genital involvement is frequent and characterized by vulvar and vaginal dryness, dyspareunia and pruritus, that significantly impairs sexual function. However, despite the high frequency of genital involvement, few data were published about the histopathology of external genitalia in pSS. The studies performed until now show that vaginal and vulvar dryness are due to the presence of a vulvar inflammatory infiltrate and to the atrophy of minor and major vestibular glands, whose secretions are important for the sexual function. Objectives: To evaluate the presence and the characteristics of histopathological and immunohistochemical changes in vulvar tissues in women with pSS. Methods: Women with pSS (21 patients) underwent vulvar biopsies that have been evaluated for histopathological and immunohistochemical changes and finally compared with those obtained from 26 patients with lichen sclerosus. Results: An inflammatory infiltrate (composed predominantly by T lymphocytes (CD3+), sparse CD20+ B cells and mean CD4:CD8 T-cell ratio of 1.5) was evidenced in all 21 biopsies and classified in mild (10), moderate (11) and severe (0). No correlation was shown between vulvar inflammatory infiltrate score and salivary Chisholm e Mason score. No differences were found neither in gynecological symptoms neither in clinical and demographical characteristics between patients with mild and those with moderate vulvar inflammatory score. A higher prevalence of moderate inflammatory infiltrate was observed in biopsies from women with lichen sclerosus than in pSS

Full-wave EMC Simulations Using Maxwell Garnett Model For Composites With Cylindrical Inclusions

Four different models for effective dielectric properties of biphasic composite containing random or aligned cylindrical inclusions are considered in this paper. These models are based on the Maxwell Garnett (MG) mixing rule. The effects of distribution and orientation of cylindrical inclusions in a composite material is studied. An equivalent averaged material with Debye-like frequency characteristics, suitable for time-domain full-wave numerical electromagnetic simulations is retrieved. This Debye model is derived from the Maxwell Garnett formulation. The numerical model test structure consists of a composite slab inserted in a rectangular waveguide. Simulations are run for the frequency range above the cut-off frequency of the fundamental mode TE10. The differences between the proposed models are quantified using the Feature Selection Validation (FSV) tool. The comparison of the models provides an insight on the effect of inclusion orientation and distribution. © 2011 IEEE

In vitro and in vivo inhibition of breast cancer cell growth by targeting the Hedgehog/GLI pathway with SMO (GDC-0449) or GLI (GANT-61) inhibitors.

Aberrant Hedgehog (Hh)/glioma-associated oncogene (GLI) signaling has been implicated in cancer progression. Here, we analyzed GLI1, Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) and NF-ÎşB expression in 51 breast cancer (ductal carcinoma) tissues using immunohistochemistry. We found a positive correlation between nuclear GLI1 expression and tumor grade in ductal carcinoma cases. Cytoplasmic Shh staining significantly correlated with a lower tumor grade. Next, the in vitro effects of two Hh signaling pathway inhibitors on breast cancer cell lines were evaluated using the Smoothened (SMO) antagonist GDC-0449 and the direct GLI1 inhibitor GANT-61. GDC-0449 and GANT-61 exhibited the following effects: a) inhibited breast cancer cell survival; b) induced apoptosis; c) inhibited Hh pathway activity by decreasing the mRNA expression levels of GLI1 and Ptch and inhibiting the nuclear translocation of GLI1; d) increased/decreased EGFR and ErbB2 protein expression, reduced p21- Ras and ERK1/ERK2 MAPK activities and inhibited AKT activation; and e) decreased the nuclear translocation of NF-ÎşB. However, GANT-61 exerted these effects more effectively than GDC-0449. The in vivo antitumor activities of GDC-0449 and GANT- 61 were analyzed in BALB/c mice that were subcutaneously inoculated with mouse breast cancer (TUBO) cells. GDC-0449 and GANT-61 suppressed tumor growth of TUBO cells in BALB/c mice to different extents. These findings suggest that targeting the Hh pathway using antagonists that act downstream of SMO is a more efficient strategy than using antagonists that act upstream of SMO for interrupting Hh signaling in breast cancer
