New programs for determining the main parameters of open clusters

A set of computer programs for the determination of the main parameters of open clusters, such as color excess, distance, and age, is developed. The set consists of two units. The first unit is designed to search for open clusters in wide fields using JHKs-photometry from various catalogs (2MASS, UKIDSS, VISTA) by identifying areas of high stellar density. The second unit determines the parameters of open clusters by fitting photometric diagrams. This is the unit described in the paper. Probable cluster members are identified by the proximity to the basic sequences on the J-(J - H) and Q-(J - H) diagrams. The color excess is determined by minimizing the deviations of Q values on the Q-(J - H) diagram. Ages and distance moduli are determined by comparing the color-magnitude diagrams with theoretical isochrones. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

The peculiar velocities of nearby stars are studied. We determine the solar velocity components from the radial velocities and proper motions of stars and open clusters. We show that nearby stars are not very suitable for the determination of the solar motion components because of peculiarities in their velocity distribution. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The livers of flight, F, rats from the Cosmos 1887 mission were markedly paler and heavier than those of the synchronous, S, and vivarium, V, controls. In the F group, microscopic study revealed extensive hepatocytic intracytoplasmic vacuolization which was moderate in the S and minimal in the V groups. The vacuoles were not sudanophilic and therefore were regarded as glycogenic in origin. To obtain objective data concerning the extent of the vacuolization, livers were examined by computer assisted morphometry. Measurements of profile area and perimeter of the hepatocyte nuclei and vacuoles were evaluated according to stereological principles. Results indicated that the volume density of the nuclei was less in the F group than in the S(p equal less than 0.0002) and V(p equal less than 0.001) groups. Mean volume of individual nuclei did not differ. Volume density of the vacuoles was greater in the F than in the V group (p equal less than 0.02) while their mean diameter was less (p equal less than 0.05). To ascertain the relationship between increase in liver weight of the flight animals and the results of this study, an assumption was made that the specific gravity of the vacuolar contents was similar to the other extranuclear components of the hepatocyte. On that basis, calculations showed that the elevated vacuolar volume density in the flight group did not cause the increased liver weight in those animals, but that the non-nuclear, non-vacuolar parenchymal compartment did contribute significantly. Factors that may have played a causal role in liver weight and vacuolar compartment increases are discussed

BACKGROUND: Acute esophageal damage may be a dose-limited factor for application the full planning radiotherapy (RT) dose in patients with inoperable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A combination of chemotherapy and RT may increase esophageal toxicity, but three-dimensional (3D) conformal RT offers better sparing of the organs at risk. AIM: The purpose of this study was to show the incidence and degree of acute esophageal damage in lung cancer patients treated with sequential and concurrent chemoradiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The total number was 73 patients, of whom 26 (34.7%) had previously received sequential chemotherapy with a four-cycle followed by RT. In the second concurrent group, 47 (65.3%) patients were received concomitant chemotherapy and RT. RESULTS: Of the 73 patients included in the study, 43 (57.3%) did not present any grade of esophagitis during the treatment. In the sequential group, 73.1% presented no esophagitis and in the concurrent group, 49%, respectively. Although there were differences between the two groups, none were statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The reason for the good tolerability of the combination of chemotherapy and RT for inoperable NSCLC patients was using 3D conformal RT. Further improvements may be obtained with more sophisticated RT or radioprotective drugs

Optical properties, electron-phonon coupling, and Raman scattering of vanadium ladder compounds

The electronic structure of two V-based ladder compounds, the quarter-filled NaV2_2O5_5 in the symmetric phase and the iso-structural half-filled CaV2_2O5_5 is investigated by ab initio calculations. Based on the bandstructure we determine the dielectric tensor ϵ(ω)\epsilon(\omega) of these systems in a wide energy range. The frequencies and eigenvectors of the fully symmetric Ag_{g} phonon modes and the corresponding electron-phonon and spin-phonon coupling parameters are also calculated from first-principles. We determine the Raman scattering intensities of the Ag_g phonon modes as a function of polarization and frequency of the exciting light. All results, i.e. shape and magnitude of the dielectric function, phonon frequencies and Raman intensities show very good agreement with available experimental data.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
