Dynamics of some constrained lattices
We consider the dynamics of lattices which have constrained constitutive
units flexible in only their mutual orientations.
A continuum description is derived through which it is shown that the models
have zero shear velocity, free-particle like internal rotational modes and
volume decreasing linearly with temperature. The relevance of modelsto a range

Herding Cats: Improving Law School Teaching
What makes a good law teacher? Is excellence in teaching largely a matter of intellectual brilliance, of superior organization and delivery of material, of friendliness and fairness to one\u27s students? Or does it have more to do with style, with stage presence, with the ability to engage an audience in the act of reflective and spontaneous thinking?
While the question of how to define and evaluate teaching necessarily bedevils deans and tenure committees who must make personnel decisions, the focus on defining the competent teacher has obscured from faculty attention the more fundamental question: how can we implement a system to improve faculty performance across the board? It is this question that law schools around the country have not adequately addressed.
Three years ago, the faculty of Franklin Pierce Law Center adopted a program to improve our classroom teaching. This article describes and evaluates that program, in which all three authors played a role
Evaluation of actuator energy storage and power sources for spacecraft applications
The objective of this evaluation is to determine an optimum energy storage/power source combination for electrical actuation systems for existing (Solid Rocket Booster (SRB), Shuttle) and future (Advanced Launch System (ALS), Shuttle Derivative) vehicles. Characteristic of these applications is the requirement for high power pulses (50-200 kW) for short times (milliseconds to seconds), coupled with longer-term base or 'housekeeping' requirements (5-16 kW). Specific study parameters (e.g., weight, volume, etc.) as stated in the proposal and specified in the Statement of Work (SOW) are included
A Nonlinear Model of the Business Cycle
The usual index of leading indicators has constant weights on its components and is therefore implicitly premised on the assumption that the dynamical properties of the economy remain the same over time and across phases of the business cycle. We explore the possibility that the business cycle has phases, for example, recessions, recoveries and normal growth, each with its unique dynamics. Based on this possibility we develop a nonlinear model of the business cycle that combines a number of previous approaches. We model the state of the economy as a latent variable with a threshold autoregression structure. In addition to dependence on its own lags the latent variable is also determined by observed economic and financial variables. In turn these variables are modeled as following a nonlinear vector autoregression with regimes defined by the latent business cycle variable. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm is developed to estimate the model. Special attention is paid to specification of prior distributions given the large dimension of the model. We also investigate using the business cycle chronology of the NBER to aid in the classification of the latent variable. Perceptions and correlates of peer-victimization and bullying
The experiences of peer-victimization and bullying are often treated empirically as though they are conceptually indistinct. Both involve repeated aggression,but definitions of bullying additionally emphasize the importance of aggressor intent and imbalance of power between the aggressor and the victim (Olweus, 1978; Whitney & Smith, 1993). The present study aimed to examine the extent to which peer-victimization and bullying are empirically similar. The sample comprised 1,429 pupils (50.2% male) aged between 8 and 13 years attending mainstream Scottish schools. Self-report questionnaire assessing peer-victimization and bullying, copingstrategy use (WCCL: Hunter, 2000), situational appraisal and depressive symptomatology (Birleson, 1981). Almost one-third (30.7%) of pupils reported experiencing peer-victimization, and of these 38.1% (11.7% of whole sample) were categorized as victims of bullying. Victims of bullying perceived higher levels of threat and lower levels of perceived control. They also reported using more Wishful Thinking and Social Support coping strategies, but did not differ on Problem Focused coping. Bullied pupils also reported higher levels of depressive symptomatology. Peer-victimization and bullying appear to be qualitatively different experiences for children and adolescents, with bullying being the more serious phenomenon
Detection and Implications of a Time-reversal breaking state in underdoped Cuprates
We present general symmetry considerations on how a Time-reversal breaking
state may be detected by angle-resolved photoemission using circularly
polarized photons as has been proposed earlier. Results of recent experiments
utilizing the proposal in underdoped cuprates are analysed and found to be
consistent in their symmetry and magnitude with a theory of the Copper-Oxides.

Minimal data at a given point of space for solutions to certain geometric systems
We consider a geometrical system of equations for a three dimensional
Riemannian manifold. This system of equations has been constructed as to
include several physically interesting systems of equations, such as the
stationary Einstein vacuum field equations or harmonic maps coupled to gravity
in three dimensions. We give a characterization of its solutions in a
neighbourhood of a given point through sequences of symmetric trace free
tensors (referred to as `null data'). We show that the null data determine a
formal expansion of the solution and we obtain necessary and sufficient growth
estimates on the null data for the formal expansion to be absolutely convergent
in a neighbourhood of the given point. This provides a complete
characterization of all the solutions to the given system of equations around
