    Comments on "Vortex Glass and Lattice Melting Transitions in a YNi_2B_2C Single Crystal"

    Recently, Mun et.al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., 76, 2790 (1996)) have published their results on single crystal YNi_2B_2C, claiming that their experimental observations can be explained in terms of formation of Vortex Glass and Lattice melting. Our experiments, carried out on samples obtained from the SAME source, reveal a much richer phase diagram and span wider regions of experimental parameter space than Mun et. al. that encompasses most of their observations.     Creativity in journalism studies includes the use of arts-based research, artistic methods, and other ways of theorising, researching, analysing and presenting data on journalism. Its purpose is to recognise and capture the many forms of journalism that are currently practiced, to develop new approaches to research (digital) journalism, and to enable the telling of the widest possible variety of stories about (digital) journalism. Creativity has a triple implication: as a concept that informs what we are looking for when studying journalism, a guide for the range of available research methods, and an inspiration for the stories we tell about our research

Challenging low-volume, high-risk clinical situations are identified, experienced senior providers are coached using scientifically-informed educational methods with support and resources from leaders in the organization, and an attempt is made to measure progress

    The role of affect regulation in the treatment of people who have committed sexual offences

    Affect regulation problems have been found to play an important role in the onset of problematic behavior, such as sexual abuse. The role of emotion and maladaptive coping has become relevant in both research and treatment interventions. Forensic treatments have been strongly influenced by conceptualizations of affect regulation that emphasize the control of emotional experience and expression. For a long time, emotions were treated as less important than cognition. However, the view of emotion as an adaptive resource and meaning system is now emerging in the forensic literature. General psychotherapy research has shown that improved affect regulation and deeper experiencing is associated with better outcomes in psychotherapy. These findings, in combination with the role of emotions in behavioral and relational functioning, are leading to a shift in forensic treatment approaches. In this paper, we review the literature on affect regulation in treatment programs for individuals who have committed sexual offences. The implications of this work for forensic practice will be considered. Finally, Emotion-Focused Therapy will be presented as a promising therapeutic approach for forensic treatment programs to promote clients' emotional engagement and processing, and to improve treatment outcomes

    Cellular and mucosal immune reactions to mental and cold stress: Associations with gender and cardiovascular reactivity

    To examine gender differences in immune reactions to stress and relationships between immune and cardiovascular reactivity, measures of cellular and mucosal immunity and cardiovascular activity were recorded in 77 men and 78 women at rest and in response to active (mental arithmetic) and passive (cold pressor) stress tasks. Both tasks reduced CD4+ T cells and the CD4/8 ratio. Total lymphocytes, NK cells, CD8+ T cells, and secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) increased with active stress. Passive stress decreased sIgA. At rest, men had more NK cells, less CD4+ T cells, and fewer neutrophils than women. Mental stress increased sIgA in men but not women. Cardiovascular reactivity to active stress was associated with increases in NK cells. The data support the hypothesis that stress-related increases in lymphocytes are beta-adrenergically mediated, and suggest that the fall in CD4+ T cells may be alpha-adrenergically driven. Mechanisms underlying sIgA reactions are more difficult to determine. Men and women differed in some cell counts, but not in reactivity, although gender influenced sIgA reactions to arithmetic

    The Dynamic Grid: Time-Varying Parameters for Musical Instrument Simulations Based on Finite-Difference Time-Domain Schemes

    Several well-established approaches to physical modeling synthesis for musical instruments exist. Finite-difference time-domain methods are known for their generality and flexibility in terms of the systems one can model but are less flexible with regard to smooth parameter variations due to their reliance on a static grid. This paper presents the dynamic grid, a method to smoothly change grid configurations of finite-difference time-domain schemes based on sub-audio–rate time variation of parameters. This allows for extensions of the behavior of physical models beyond the physically possible, broadening the range of expressive possibilities for the musician. The method is applied to the 1D wave equation, the stiff string, and 2D systems, including the 2D wave equation and thin plate.
