This article discusses the productive and reproductive roles Filipino women perform and assesses their contributions to human development. It also examines the reality of their marginalization from the country’s social, economic and political life. It then suggests on measures by which women can be empowered to achieve the goals of gender equality and equity.women's issues, vulnerable groups, development program, MIMAP

Expansion of bound state energies in powers of m/M and (1-m/M)

    Get PDF
Elaborating on a previous letter, we use a new approach to compute energy levels of a non-relativistic bound-state of two constituents, with masses m and M, by systematic expansions - one in powers of m/M and another in powers of (1-m/M). Technical aspects of the calculations are described in detail. Theoretical predictions are given for O(alpha(Z*alpha)^5) radiative recoil and O((Z*alpha)^6) pure recoil corrections to the average energy shift and hyperfine splitting relevant for hydrogen, muonic hydrogen, and muonium.Comment: 9 pages, revte

Loyalty and longevity in audience listening: investigating experiences of attendance at a chamber music festival

    Get PDF
There is currently much concern amongst arts organisations and their marketing departments that audiences for classical music are in decline, yet little research has so far investigated the experiences of long-term listeners for insight on audience development and retention. This paper presents a case study of the Music in the Round chamber music festival, conducted over a three year period which included the retirement of the host string quartet, the appointment of a new resident ensemble, and associated changes in audience attitudes and priorities. The interaction between individual listening and collective membership of an audience is discussed, and the potential considered for understanding classical concert-goers as ‘fans’ or ‘consumers’

    Mobile library and staff preparedness

    Get PDF
The provision of access to information and effective delivery of information services is central to the role of librarians. Mobile technologies have added another dimension to this role – one that requires new knowledge, skills and competencies to ensure the needs and expectations of users are met. If libraries are to be successful in developing services for mobile technologies, their managers will have to consider two significant staffing issues. Firstly, it is important to understand what knowledge, skills and competencies are needed by staff to enable them to deliver services through mobile technologies, and secondly, to use that understanding to provide support and training for staff in the use of mobile technologies. In order to explore these issues and to contribute to the planning and professional development in the mobile library environment, a survey was undertaken of librarians working in the vocational education and training (VET) sector in Australia and New Zealand

Pier Luigi Nervi, modern technology for classical typology.

    Get PDF
This paper investigates around the figure of Pier Luigi Nervi (1891-1979). Perceived mainly as an innovative structural engineer, Nervi has been arguably the most important Italian designer of the post-war period. This article is founded on the necessity to update the knowledge on the substantial contribution on Architecture from the Engineers. The timeliness of this research is apparent when one considers, for example, the 2005 RIBA Gold medal awarded to the Engineer Frei Otto. In this perspective, Nervi needs to be re-considered under the new light of his design-process, which had the most apparent outcome in the structures for the Olympic Games in Rome, 1960. An account of which is traced in this paper. Through historical comparisons, this paper shows how important were the influences of contemporary and historical context in which Nervi designed these sport buildings

The Visvalingam algorithm: metrics, measures and heuristics

    Get PDF
This paper provides the background necessary for a clear understanding of forthcoming papers relating to the Visvalingam algorithm for line generalisation, for example on the testing and usage of its implementations. It distinguishes the algorithm from implementation-specific issues to explain why it is possible to get inconsistent but equally valid output from different implementations. By tracing relevant developments within the now-disbanded Cartographic Information Systems Research Group (CISRG) of the University of Hull, it explains why a) a partial metric-driven implementation was, and still is, sufficient for many projects but not for others; b) why the Effective Area (EA) is a measure derived from a metric; c) why this measure (EA) may serve as a heuristic indicator for in-line feature segmentation and model-based generalisation; and, d) how metrics may be combined to change the order of point elimination. The issues discussed in this paper also apply to the use of other metrics. It is hoped that the background and guidance provided in this paper will enable others to participate in further research based on the algorithm
