    Positron Emission Tomography in Psychiatry: New Sights, New Insights

    Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a new tool with which to explore the neurobiological basis of psychiatric illness. PET permits in-vivo measurement of regional cerebral blood flow, regional glucose metabolism, as well as information about neurochemicals and their receptors. Since regional cerebral bloodflow and glucose metabolism reflect ongoing neuronal activity, the neural bases of different cognitive processes and emotional states can be discerned using PET. Findings from recent studies in schizophrenia, affective disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders, and dementia are reviewed with a special emphasis on how these findings may\u27 be useful in developing a more comprehensive framework for understanding the neurobiological basis of psychiatric disorders. The relationship between PET and other brain imaging modalities, the imminent improvements in PET technology, as well as future directions of research are discussed

    Soil weathering rates in 21 catchments of the Canadian Shield

    Soil mineral weathering represents an essential source of nutrient base cation (Ca, Mg and K) for forest growth in addition to provide a buffering power against precipitation acidity for soils and surface waters. Weathering rates of base cations were obtained for 21 catchments located within the temperate and the boreal forest of the Canadian Shield with the geochemical model PROFILE. Weathering rates ranged from 0.58 to 4.46 kmol<sub>c</sub> ha<sup>−1</sup> yr<sup>−1</sup> and their spatial variation within the studied area was mostly in agreement with spatial variations in soil mineralogy. Weathering rates of Ca and Mg were significantly correlated (<i>r</i> = 0.80 and 0.64) with their respective lake concentrations. Weathering rates of K and Na did not correlate with lake concentrations of K and Na. The modeled weathering rates for each catchment were also compared with estimations of net catchment exportations. The result show that modeled weathering rates of Ca were not significantly different than the net catchment exportations while modeled weathering rates of Mg were higher by 51%. Larger differences were observed for K and Na weathering rates that were significantly different than net catchment exportations being 6.9 and 2.2 times higher than net exportations, respectively. The results for K were expected given its high reactivity with biotic compartments and suggest that most of the K produced by weathering reactions was retained within soil catchments and/or above ground biomass. This explanation does not apply to Na, however, which is a conservative element in forest ecosystems because of the insignificant needs of Na for soil microorganisms and above ground vegetations. It raises concern about the liability of the PROFILE model to provide reliable values of Na weathering rates. Overall, we concluded that the PROFILE model is powerful enough to reproduce spatial geographical gradients in weathering rates for relatively large areas as well as adequately predict absolute weathering rates values for the sum of base cations, Ca and Mg

    We prove that an m-dimensional unit ball D^m in the Euclidean space {\mathbb R}^m cannot be isometrically embedded into a higher-dimensional Euclidean ball B_r^d \subset {\mathbb R}^d of radius r < 1/2 unless one of two conditions is met -- (1)The embedding manifold has dimension d >= 2m. (2) The embedding is not smooth. The proof uses differential geometry to show that if d<2m and the embedding is smooth and isometric, we can construct a line from the center of D^m to the boundary that is geodesic in both D^m and in the embedding manifold {\mathbb R}^d.     Semiclassical mechanics of a non-integrable spin cluster

    We study detailed classical-quantum correspondence for a cluster system of three spins with single-axis anisotropic exchange coupling. With autoregressive spectral estimation, we find oscillating terms in the quantum density of states caused by classical periodic orbits: in the slowly varying part of the density of states we see signs of nontrivial topology changes happening to the energy surface as the energy is varied. Also, we can explain the hierarchy of quantum energy levels near the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states with EKB quantization to explain large structures and tunneling to explain small structures.Comment: 9 pages.     Comparison of walking variations during treadmill walking test between neurogenic and vascular claudication: a crossover study

    Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are two distinct conditions characterized by similar symptoms including leg pain and walking limitations due to claudication. Differentiation between both origins can be difficult and characteristics such as symptom manifestations, time to relief in rest position and pain localization should be considered when determining diagnosis and the treatment plan.     Physical predictors of favorable postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing laminectomy or laminotomy for central lumbar spinal stenosis: secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial

    Study Design: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial. Objective: To identify preoperative physical variables associated with favorable postoperative outcome in individuals undergoing laminectomy or laminotomy for degenerative central lumbar spinal stenosis. Summary of Background Data: Clinical or condition specific variables have most commonly been studied as predictors of postoperative outcome in lumbar spinal stenosis. If associated to favorable postoperative outcome, modifiable physical variables would inform prehabilitation interventions for patients with degenerative central lumbar spinal stenosis. Methods: Patients awaiting surgery for central lumbar spinal stenosis were recruited to participate in a randomized controlled trial. Following baseline data collection of demographics, clinical portrait and physical testing, participants were randomized to either 6-week active prehabilitation program or hospital standard care. Complete baseline and postoperative data were obtained from 58 participants which were included in the present analysis. Favorable postoperative outcome was determined based on two outcome measures. Favorable outcome was defined as a decrease of ≥30% on the Numerical Rating Scale for leg pain intensity and a decrease of ≥30% on the Oswestry Disability Index for low back disability. Baseline physical variables were used to conduct binary logistic regression. Results: Sixty percent of participants were determined as having a favorable postoperative outcome. None of the included physical variables were found to be predictors of a favorable postoperative outcome based on leg pain intensity and low back pain-associated disability [trunk flexors muscle strength (OR = 0.73; 95%CI (0.02–27.12)] lumbar extensors muscle endurance [OR= 1.09; 95%CI (0.95–1.24)] total ambulation time [OR = 1.00 95%CI (0.99–1.01)] lumbar active range of motion in extension [OR = 1.08; 95%CI (0.95–1.23)] and knee extensors muscle strength [OR=1.02; 95%CI (0.98–1.06)]. Conclusion: Results show that none of the investigated variables, all related to low back and lower limbs physical capacity, were predictors of postoperative recovery. Further testing in larger cohort is needed to assess the full potential of physical outcome measures as predictors of postoperative recovery
