'Hello, Jav, Got a New Motor?': Cars, (De)Racialization and Muslim Identity
yesThe car is a symbolic presence at the heart of the
everyday experience of multi-ethnic coexistence.
Exploring the potential significance of car
ownership among members of the Pakistani/Muslim
population in Bradford has an inherent interest and
virtue, but more acutely, it can shed light on social
relations where class, gender, religion and ethnicity
intersect. The ‘young Asian/White/Muslim/Black
male driver’ has acquired a certain meaning and
reputation which has largely negative associations
across Britain. However, once stereotypes such
as the ones at play in the diary entry above are
unpicked and engaged with, meaning becomes
more nuanced and complicated, but no less vital.
Indeed, the research upon which this paper is
based suggests that car culture offers insights:
first, into how some aspects of broader ‘British
Muslim’ identity are framed; and second, that often
negative, exoticized and racialized aspects of
identity can be detuned and thus made less potent
markers of racialized thinking
Innovation-ICT-cybersecurity: The triad relationship and its impact on growth competitiveness
This study examines the global growth competitiveness of countries using the dynamics of growth, ICT, and innovation. It also introduces a new dynamic, cybersecurity, and argues that within a growth competitiveness framework, ICT, innovation, and cybersecurity mechanisms allow some countries to achieve higher ranks on the competitiveness ladder than others. Based on a theoretical framework that encompasses the economic growth model, the complementarity theory, and the international law theory, a model that integrates ICT, innovation, and cybersecurity, depicts the relationships amongst them and with growth competitiveness, and incorporates complementary factors with possible moderating effect is presented. The model proposed relationships are then tested using PLS-PM. The model proves to have adequate goodness-of-fit as well as predictive validity. Results support most hypotheses showing: (1) a positive relationship between ICT and innovation; (2) a positive relationship between each of innovation and ICT with growth competitiveness; (3) a mediating effect of innovation has in the ICT – growth competitiveness relationship; (4) a positive relationship between ICT and innovation on one hand and cybersecurity on the other; (5) a mediating role of cybersecurity in the ICT – growth as well as the innovation – growth relationships; and the (6) moderating effect that human capital has in the above relationships. Cyber threats, however, do not have a moderator role in these relationships. These findings are interpreted in relation to the extant body of knowledge related to ICT, innovation, and cybersecurity. Moreover, the theoretical and the practical implications are discussed and the practical significance is shown. Finally, the study limitations are listed, the recommendations are presented, and the direction for future work is discussed
Leucine-rich glioma-inactivated protein 1 antibody encephalitis: A case report
OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of leucine-rich glioma-inactivated protein 1 (LGI1) antibody-associated encephalitis.
METHODS: The clinical and ancillary data and brain MRIs were gathered retrospectively by chart review. Relevant literature on similar cases was also reviewed.
RESULTS: The diagnosis of LGI1 antibody-associated autoimmune encephalitis was based on the typical clinical presentation of seizures, psychiatric symptoms, and memory loss as well as negative diagnostic testing for cancer; the diagnosis was confirmed by positive LGI1 antibody. The patient responded favorably to treatment with IV immunoglobulin and continues to do well.
CONCLUSION: LGI1 antibody-associated encephalitis has increasingly been recognized as a primary autoimmune disorder with good prognosis and response to treatment
Dynamic Security of Virtualized Systems: An Analysis of Time-based Impact
Virtualization technologies pose time-sensitive security challenges that need to be addressed from a dynamic security perspective. Adopting a dynamic security approach can help organizations manage the security risks inherent in virutalized environments. This paper conceptually examines current thought on best practices in information security systems which explains the dynamic nature of virtualized systems and paves the way for an information security model into which virtualization can be incorporated. We suggest that a proper analysis of timebased impact of security threats would help mitigate virtualization security risks, allowing IT security professionals and users to efficiently coordinate security objectives with the larger goals of the organization
Towards a Framework for Perceived Effectiveness of Mobile Learning
Recent years have witnessed rapid advancement in mobile learning technology. A major issue is the identification of thefactors that would relate to the diverse needs of users. If mobile learning is intended to enhance distance, interactive, andcollaborative learning, then it is mission critical to understand the impact of individual, social, and technological factors thatwould play a role in the effectiveness of this learning model as perceived by its users. This paper addresses this need byproposing an integrated and a holistic model that depicts the factors that may have the potential to impact the perceivedmobile learning effectiveness. To operationalize the model constructs, a survey-based instrument will be developed based ona review of frameworks pertinent to technology acceptance, diffusion of innovation, and media richness, and of literaturerelated to e-learning. The conceptual model will be discussed, and the study conclusion, implications, and limitations will bepresented
Investigation of marmoset hybrids (Cebuella pygmaea x Callithrix jacchus) and related Callitrichinae (Platyrrhini) by cross-species chromosome painting and comparative genomic hybridization
We report on the cytogenetics of twin offspring from an interspecies cross in marmosets (Callitrichinae, Platyrrhini), resulting from a pairing between a female Common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus, 2n = 46) and a male Pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea, 2n = 44). We analyzed their karyotypes by multi-directional chromosome painting employing human, Saguinus oedipus and Lagothrix lagothricha chromosome-specific probes. Both hybrid individuals had a karyotype with a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 45. As a complementary tool, interspecies comparative genomic hybridization (iCGH) was performed in order to screen for genomic imbalances between the hybrids and their parental species, and between Callithrix argentata and S. oedipus, respectively. The Penetration of Pollutant Productions on Dynamic Generated Power Operations Optimized Using a Novel Evolutionary Algorithm
At Present, the environmental protection penetrates public awareness to decrease atmospheric emissions as important efforts for increasing living quality in air from various gaseous effects. Technically, it has forced industrial sectors to control pollutant productions while operating machineries of engineering processes to keep all materials for final products. It has also forced the power system operation to modify operational strategies of thermal power plants considered pollutant productions from combustions of fossil fuels for reducing emissions. Moreover, reasonable decisions are needed to schedule combinations of generating units for providing electric energy with less pollutant discharges and more economically operation. In particular, these strategies are required by operational conditions and technical constraints for optimizing the operating cost included decreasing pollutant productions. This paper demonstrates new approaches for measuring pollutant penetrations embedded in single priority function. Results obtained show that the computation has different performances for 24 hours of the operation. Moreover, emission discharges are dominated gradually by higher contributors associated with scheduled power plants as emission requirements
Causes of death after liver transplantation in children treated with cyclosporine and steroids
Two-hundred-and-twenty-seven children underwent orthotopic liver transplantation between March 1980 and March 1986. Seventy (31%) patients died during the study period. Four patients who died within 24 hours of the initial liver transplant and 5 patients who died outside of our institution were excluded from the analysis. Liver failure, related to either thrombosis of the hepatic artery, primary non-function of the graft or rejection accounted for 25 of the remaining 61 deaths. In 21 patients death was related to overwheming sepsis while 7 patients died from excessive bleeding. Eight of the deaths were due to a miscellaneous group of causes. Twenty percent of the 150 patients who received a single liver transplant died compared to a death rate of 50% in patients who underwent three transplants. Eighty-five percent of the deaths occurred within 6 months after the initial liver transplant. Liver failure was the cause in the majority of the early deaths whereas the later deaths were more likely to be due to sepsis. This detailed analysis of the causes of death after pediatric liver transplantation in a large group of patients has revealed that advances in certain areas could lead to even better results
