Application of Design of Experiments to Extrusion Freeform Fabrication (EFF) of Functional Ceramic Prototypes
Extrusion Freeform Fabrication (EFF) is an adaptation of the Stratasys Fused Deposition
Modeling (FDM) process for the Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) of functional ceramic
prototypes. It is a complex process involving many process variables, including parameters that
are operation, machine, materials, and geometry specific. A Taguchi factorial Design of
Experiments (DOE) technique was utilized to study the effects of machine specific process
parameters as well as their interactions based on the mechanical and physical properties of
sintered ceramics specimens. Post-processing software was developed to control and modify these
parameters. This software interface wasdesigned to mimic the Quickslice™ interface for setting
motion parameters based upon the material and the operation. The results of this investigation
provided useful information for the experimental analysis of the machine specific process
parameters. Suitable parameters were selected for the EFF process for fabricating representative
ceramic prototypes. With the optimized parameters, complicated parts were successfully
fabricated using both Kyocera SN282 and Starck M-11 silicon nitride powders.Mechanical Engineerin
Long-term result of Memokath urethral sphincter stent in spinal cord injury patients
BACKGROUND: Memokath urethral sphincter stents are used to facilitate bladder emptying in patients with spinal cord injury, but long term follow-up has not been reported. METHODS: Case series of ten men with spinal cord injury who underwent insertion of Memokath stents and were followed for up to nine years. RESULTS: Within four years, the stent had to be removed in nine out of ten patients because of: extensive mucosal proliferation causing obstruction to the lumen of the stent; stone around the proximal end of the stent, incomplete bladder emptying, and recurrent urinary infections; migration of the stent into the bladder related to digital evacuation of bowels; large residual urine; concretions within the stent causing obstruction to flow of urine, and partial blockage of the stent causing frequent episodes of autonomic dysreflexia. In one patient the stent continued to function satisfactorily after nine years. CONCLUSIONS: The Memokath stent has a role as a temporary measure for treatment of detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia in selected SCI patients who do not get recurrent urinary infection and do not require manual evacuation of bowels

General solution of certain matrix equations arising in filter design applications
In this work we present the explicit expression of all rectangular Toeplitz matrices B,C which verify the equation BBH +CCH = aI for some a > 0. This matrix equation arises in some signal processing problems. For instance, it appears when designing the even and odd components of paraunitary filters, which are widely used for signal compression and denoising purposes. We also point out the relationship between the above matrix equation and the polynomial B´ezout equation |B(z)|2 +|C(z)|2 = a > 0 for |z| = 1. By exploiting this fact, our results also yield a constructive method for the parameterization of all solutions B(z),C(z). The main advantage of our approach is that B are C are built without need of spectral factorization. Besides these theoretical advances, in order to illustrate the effectiveness of our approach, some examples of paraunitary filters design are finally given
Electrical and Thermal Characteristics of Lithium-Ion Cells
The 18,650 type lithium ion cells are characterized by a cell resistance of 130 mOmega, capacity of 1.27 Ah at 25 C, and a mid-discharge voltage of 3.6 V. The capacity loss in the 72-hour stand test was 3.39%. The heat dissipation properties were determined by a radiative calorimeter. During charge, initial endothermic cooling and subsequent exothermic cooling beyond 55% state- of-charge were observed. At C/2 rate of discharge (which is considered medium rate), the heat dissipated was 17 mW/cu cm. The heat dissipation profile during discharge is also unique in the presence of a minimum that is different from that observed for Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, and Ni-H2 cells
Examination of the performance characteristics of velostat as an in-socket pressure sensor
Velostat is a low-cost, low-profile electrical bagging material with piezoresistive properties, making it an attractive option for in-socket pressure sensing. The focus of this research was to explore the suitability of a Velostat-based system for providing real-time socket pressure profiles. The prototype system performance was explored through a series of bench tests to determine properties including accuracy, repeatability and hysteresis responses, and through participant testing with a single subject. The fabricated sensors demonstrated mean accuracy errors of 110 kPa and significant cyclical and thermal drift effects of up to 0.00715 V/cycle and leading to up to a 67% difference in voltage range respectively. Despite these errors the system was able to capture data within a prosthetic socket, aligning to expected contact and loading patterns for the socket and amputation type. Distinct pressure maps were obtained for standing and walking tasks displaying loading patterns indicative of posture and gait phase. The system demonstrated utility for assessing contact and movement patterns within a prosthetic socket, potentially useful for improvement of socket fit, in a low cost, low profile and adaptable format. However, Velostat requires significant improvement in its electrical properties before proving suitable for accurate pressure measurement tools in lower limb prosthetics
Finite-channel chromatic derivative filter banks
Two previous contributions discussed the theory of perfect-reconstruction (PR) chromatic derivative filter banks comprising an infinite number of channels. This paper extends the theory to the case of finite channels. A novel time domain procedure is delineated for designing the synthesis filters that achieve PR in this case
