Experimental design and building of a cable reinforced plastic brick arch

    No full text
This paper reports on the final stage of a summer long in situ research project with the realization of a full scale, architectural prototype taking place in Genk, Belgium 2017. The scope of this project was to develop new ways how recycling of domestic plastic waste can lead to the production of structural elements for an architectural application using the common format of a brick. Appling recycled polymer composites as a building material will reduce waste and elongates the life-cycle of a challenging contemporary resource. The present paper describes a novel strategy for the assembly of an 8m high masonry arch, consisting of 614 bricks. The structure of the arch is designed to take optimal advantage of the relatively favorable compressive resistance of its material. “In situ” research, allows designers and builders to have a continuous exchange within a material-based investigation. Experimentation and craftsmanship complimented with digital and empirical testing, are fundamental to reach an open and accessible construction strategy. The Arch illustrates the potential for the further integration of recycled plastic into the architectural workflow

Association between Cold Face Test-induced vagal inhibition and cortisol response to acute stress

Low vagal function is related to several disorders. One possible underlying mechanism linking the vagus nerve and disorders is the HPA axis. Thirty-three healthy male subjects participated in a stress task, while heart rate (HR), respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), salivary cortisol, and mood were assessed. Vagal function was determined using baseline, stress-induced inhibition, and Cold Face Test (CFT)-induced stimulation. The stress task induced a significant increase in cortisol and HR, a decrease in RSA, and a worsening of mood. A linear regression model with the time from CFT onset until maximum bradycardia as the independent variable explained 17.9% of the total variance in cortisol in response to the stressor (mood: 36.5%). The results indicate that a faster CFT response is associated with reduced cortisol increase and enhanced mood after acute stress. Our data support an inverse relationship between vagal function and the HPA axis

    2-DPMP (desoxypipradrol, 2-benzhydrylpiperidine, 2-phenylmethylpiperidine) and D2PM (diphenyl-2-pyrrolidin-2-yl-methanol, diphenylprolinol) : A preliminary review

Originally developed in the 1950s for the treatment of narcolepsy and ADHD, 2-DPMP's use soon became very limited. Recreational use of 2-DPMP and D2PM appears to have started in March 2007, but only developed slowly. However, in the UK their popularity grew in 2009, increasing rapidly during summer 2010. At this time, there were many presentations to UK Emergency Departments by patients complaining of undesirable physical and psychiatric effects after taking 2-DPMP. In spring 2011 there were similar presentations for D2PM. Recreational use of these drugs has been reported only occasionally in on-line user fora. There is little scientifically-based literature on the pharmacological, physiological, psychopharmacological, toxicological and epidemiological characteristics of these drugs. Here we describe what is known about them, especially on their toxicity, including what we believe to be the first three deaths involving the use of 2-DPMP in August 2010. There are no international controls imposed on 2-DPMP or D2PM. However, a ban on their UK importation was imposed in November 2011 and they became Class C drugs on 13 June 2012. It is critical that any other cases, including non-fatal overdoses, are documented so that a scientific evidence-base can be established for them.Peer reviewedSubmitted Versio
