Highly Entangled Ground States in Tripartite Qubit Systems
We investigate the creation of highly entangled ground states in a system of
three exchange-coupled qubits arranged in a ring geometry. Suitable magnetic
field configurations yielding approximate GHZ and exact W ground states are
identified. The entanglement in the system is studied at finite temperature in
terms of the mixed-state tangle tau. By adapting a steepest-descent
optimization algorithm we demonstrate that tau can be evaluated efficiently and
with high precision. We identify the parameter regime for which the equilibrium
entanglement of the tripartite system reaches its maximum.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Recombinant human activated protein C in acute lung injury: what is the role of bronchial circulation?
Impairment of the protein C pathway plays a central role in the pathogenesis of sepsis. Treatment with recombinant human activated protein C (rhAPC) has been reported to increase survival from severe sepsis. Protein C levels also decrease markedly in acute lung injury, of both septic and nonseptic origin. Low levels of protein C in acute lung injury are associated with poor clinical outcome. The present article discusses the beneficial effects of rhAPC in oleic acid-induced lung injury as well as the controversies between different animal models and the timing of drug administration. The unique bronchial circulation in ovine models seems to be responsible for the beneficial effects of rhAPC when given simultaneously to the injury
Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography of Optic Nerve Head Drusen: A Comparison of Cases with and without Visual Field Loss
PURPOSE: Enhanced depth imaging (EDI) spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT) has been recognized as the most sensitive tool to diagnose optic nerve head drusen (ONHD). The relationship between OCT characteristics and visual loss has not been well documented. This study compares EDI SD OCT-determined morphologic characteristics of drusen in eyes with or without visual field (VF) defects. DESIGN: Descriptive study of patients attending the neuro-ophthalmology service of Moorfields Eye Hospital between January 2013 and October 2014. SUBJECTS: Patients with diagnosed ONHD and EDI SD OCT imaging of the optic nerve head. METHODS: Eyes with and without VF defects were compared with regard to retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, drusen morphology, size, extent, visibility on funduscopy, ultrasound, and fundus autofluorescence. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Difference in OCT characteristics of ONHD between patients with or without VF defects. RESULTS: Of 38 patients, 69 eyes with ONHD were included. Thirty-three eyes had a normal VF with average mean deviation (MD) -0.96 (±1.2) dB and pattern standard deviation (PSD) 1.6 (±0.3) dB (group I), and 36 eyes had VF defects with MD -13.7 (±10.4) dB and PSD 7.2 (±3.6) dB (group II). Mean global RNFL thickness was 62 (±20.9) μm in the latter group and 99.0 (±12.9) μm in group I. In group I, the predominant drusen type was peripapillary drusen, of variable size. In group II, most eyes had confluent (P 500 μm; P < 0.003) drusen, and drusen were more commonly visible on funduscopy (P = 0.001), ultrasound (P = 0.013), and autofluorescence (P = 0.002). Differences between the 2 groups reached statistical significance in a clustered analysis. RNFL thinning and autofluorescence showed relative sparing of the temporal sector. Sixty-four percent of patients with a VF defect in 1 eye also had a VF defect in their fellow eye. CONCLUSIONS: Drusen size and drusen type as classified by OCT morphologic characteristics are significantly different in patients with or without VF defects. Confluent, large, and autofluorescent drusen were more commonly found in patients with VF defects. These findings may assist in clarifying how drusen give rise to visual loss, which is currently not known
Functional single nucleotide polymorphisms in dopaminergic receptors D2 predict clinical response to Cariprazine
Cariprazine (CAR) is an antipsychotic drug for the treatment of schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD), and it acts as a partial agonist on the dopamine receptors (DR), D2, and D3. Although many single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes coding for these receptors are known to influence response to antipsychotics, to date, no study on CAR pharmacogenetics exists. In this pilot study, we investigated the relationship between SNPs in DRD2 (rs1800497 and rs6277) and DRD3 (rs6280), and response to CAR treatment, evaluated by the psychometric Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), in a cohort of Caucasian patients. We found a significant association between DRD2 rs1800497 and rs6277 and response to CAR treatment. When genotypes were combined into an arbitrary score, the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that using a cut-off value of -2.5 the response to CAR treatment could be predicted with a positive likelihood ratio of 8.0. Our study report, for the first time, a correlation between SNPs in DRD2 and response to CAR treatment. After confirmation in a larger cohort of patients, our results could open the way for the identification of new tools for the provision of response to CAR treatment

Association between perceived coercion and perceived level of information in involuntarily admitted patients: Results from a multicenter observational study in Switzerland.
Involuntary admissions (IA) to psychiatric hospitals are controversial because they interfere with people's autonomy. In some situations, however, they appear to be unavoidable. Interestingly, not all patients perceive the same degree of coercion during IA. The aim of this study was to assess whether the level of knowledge about one's own IA is associated with perceived coercion.
This multicenter observational study was conducted on n = 224 involuntarily admitted patients. Interviews were conducted at five study centers from April 2021 to November 2021. The Macarthur Admission Experience Survey was administered to assess perceived coercion. Knowledge of involuntary admission, perceptions of information received, and attitudes towards legal aspects of involuntary admission were also assessed.
We found that higher levels of knowledge about IA were negatively associated with perceived coercion at admission. Perceived coercion did not differ between study sites. Only half of the patients felt well informed about their IA, and about a quarter found the information they received difficult to understand.
Legislation in Switzerland requires that patients with IA be informed about the procedure. Strategies to improve patients' understanding of the information given to them about IA might be helpful to reduce perceived coercion, which is known to be associated with negative attitudes towards psychiatry, a disturbed therapeutic relationship, avoidance of psychiatry, and the risk of further coercion

We give a complete solution for the three-tangle of mixed three-qubit states
composed of a generalized GHZ state, a|000>+b|111>, and a generalized W state,
c|001>+d|010>+f|100>. Using the methods introduced by Lohmayer et al. we
provide explicit expressions for the mixed-state three-tangle and the
corresponding optimal decompositions for this more general case. Moreover, as a
special case we obtain a general solution for a family of states consisting of
a generalized GHZ state and an orthogonal product state
