    Measurement Properties and Implementation of a Checklist to Assess Leadership Skills during Interdisciplinary Rounds in the Intensive Care Unit

    The implementation of interdisciplinary teams in the intensive care unit (ICU) has focused attention on leadership behavior. A daily recurrent situation in ICUs in which both leadership behavior and interdisciplinary teamwork are integrated concerns the interdisciplinary rounds (IDRs). Although IDRs are recommended to provide optimal interdisciplinary and patient-centered care, there are no checklists available for leading physicians. We tested the measurement properties and implementation of a checklist to assess the quality of leadership skills in interdisciplinary rounds. The measurement properties of the checklist, which included 10 essential quality indicators, were tested for interrater reliability and internal consistency and by factor analysis. The interrater reliability among 3 raters was good (κ, 0.85) and the internal consistency was acceptable (α, 0.74). Factor analysis showed all factor loadings on 1 domain (>0.65). The checklist was further implemented during videotaped IDRs which were led by senior physicians and in which 99 patients were discussed. Implementation of the checklist showed a wide range of “no” and “yes” scores among the senior physicians. These results may underline the need for such a checklist to ensure tasks are synchronized within the team

    The active phase in cobalt-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

    Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is an industrial catalytic process that converts a mixture of CO and hydrogen into long-chain hydrocarbons. These products are used as clean transportation fuels and chemical building blocks. The solid catalysts used in the process are complex multi-component systems. Therefore, unambiguously determining the catalytically active phase under reaction conditions remains challenging and thus a topic of debate. The active phase in cobalt-based FTS, including the reaction pathways it catalyzes, has been of industrial and academic interest for many years. It provides direct ways to control the output of the process. The delineation between an active and inactive phase is often unclear, as different phases (i.e., cobalt oxide, carbide, and metal) have different catalytic behavior. This review focuses on cobalt-based FTS materials, with a special focus on the industrially applied cobalt/TiO2 system. The various cobalt phases are reviewed and discussed with respect to the most recent literature

    Random Effects Logistic Models for Analyzing Efficacy of a Longitudinal Randomized Treatment With Non-Adherence

    We present a random effects logistic approach for estimating the efficacy of treatment for compliers in a randomized trial with treatment non-adherence and longitudinal binary outcomes. We use our approach to analyse a primary care depression intervention trial. The use of a random effects model to estimate efficacy supplements intent-to-treat longitudinal analyses based on random effects logistic models that are commonly used in primary care depression research. Our estimation approach is an extension of Nagelkerke et al.\u27s instrumental variables approximation for cross-sectional binary outcomes. Our approach is easily implementable with standard random effects logistic regression software. We show through a simulation study that our approach provides reasonably accurate inferences for the setting of the depression trial under model assumptions. We also evaluate the sensitivity of our approach to model assumptions for the depression trial

    A stand-alone, menu-driven PC program, written in GAUSS386i, extending the analysis of one-sample longitudinal data sets satisfying the two-stage polynomial growth curve model (Ten Have et al., Am J Hum Biol, 3 (1991) 269-279) to allow missing data is described, illustrated and made available to interested readers.     Insomnia and the incidence, recurrence and persistence of common mental disorders:Sex-differences in the general population

    Insomnia is common throughout the population and thought to be a risk factor for mental disorders. We assessed the association of insomnia symptoms with incidence, recurrence and persistence of mood, anxiety and substance use disorders. In 4007 participants (55 % women, mean age 51.0 ± 12.3) of the population-based Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS), having insomnia symptoms increased the odds of developing, recurring and persisting mood disorders, mostly in men. Insomnia only associated with recurring anxiety disorders, particularly in women, and not with substance use disorders. Treating insomnia may aid recovery and prevention of mental disorders, particularly mood disorders.</p

    Cocos (Keeling) Corals Reveal 200 Years of Multidecadal Modulation of Southeast Indian Ocean Hydrology by Indonesian Throughflow

    The only low latitude pathway of heat and salt from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean, known as Indonesian Throughflow (ITF), has been suggested to modulate Global Mean Surface Temperature (GMST) warming through redistribution of surface Pacific Ocean heat. ITF observations are only available since ~1990s, and thus, its multidecadal variability on longer time scales has remained elusive. Here we present a 200 year bimonthly record of geochemical parameters (d 18 O-Sr/Ca) measured on Cocos (Keeling) corals tracking sea surface temperature (SST; Sr/Ca) and sea surface salinity (SSS; seawater-d 18 O-d 18 O sw ) in the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean (SETIO). Our results show that SETIO SSS and d 18 O sw were impacted by ITF transport over the past 60 years, and therefore, reconstructions of Cocos d 18 O sw hold information on past ITF variability on longer time spans. Over the past 200 years ITF leakage into SETIO is dominated by the interannual climate modes of the Pacific Ocean (El Niño—Southern Oscillation) and Indian Ocean (Indian Ocean Dipole). Pacific decadal climate variability (represented by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation) significantly impacted ITF strength over the past 200 years determining the spatiotemporal SST and SSS advection into the Indian Ocean on multidecadal time scales. A comparison of our SETIO d 18 O sw record to GMST shows that ITF transport varied in synchrony with global warming rate, being predominantly high/low during GMST warming slowdown/acceleration, respectively. This hints toward an important role for the ITF in global warming rate modulation
