Performance of wind turbines in a turbulent atmosphere
The effect of atmospheric turbulence on the power fluctuations of large wind turbines was studied. The significance of spatial non-uniformities of the wind is emphasized. The turbulent wind with correlation in time and space is simulated on the computer by Shinozukas method. The wind turbulence is modelled according to the Davenport spectrum with an exponential spatial correlation function. The rotor aerodynamics is modelled by simple blade element theory. Comparison of the spectrum of power output signal between 1-D and 3-D turbulence, shows the significant power fluctuations centered around the blade passage frequency
Impact of Globalization on Production and Export of Turmeric in India – An Economic Analysis
India is a major supplier of turmeric to the world with more than 60 per cent share in turmeric trade. The production and export performance of turmeric in India have been examined using secondary data for the period from 1974-75 to 2007-08 and exponential form of growth function has been used for the analysis. The growth in production and export of turmeric has been reported significant, because of the high demand coupled with inflation. Instability index has been worked for the production and export for preliberalization and post-liberalization periods. Instability has been observed high for production, export and prices of domestic and international markets and domestic and international prices have shown high integration. For the assessment of direction of trade, the Markov chain model has been used. The data regarding country-wise export of turmeric has shown that the previous export share retention for Indian turmeric has been high in minor importing countries (pooled under others category) (87 %), followed by UAE (49 %), Iran (41 %) and UK (35 %). The countries such as USA and Japan have not been the stable importers of Indian turmeric. The plans for export may be oriented towards these two countries and also plans should be formulated for stabilizing the export of turmeric to other countries. The farmers should be provided training on production of a quality product.Turmeric, Export of turmeric, Indian turmeric, Markov chain model, Agricultural and Food Policy, Q13, Q17,
An analytical model of prominence dynamics
Solar prominences are magnetic structures incarcerating cool and dense gas in
an otherwise hot solar corona. Prominences can be categorized as quiescent and
active. Their origin and the presence of cool gas (~K) within the hot
(~K) solar corona remains poorly understood. The structure and dynamics
of solar prominences was investigated in a large number of observational and
theoretical (both analytical and numerical) studies. In this paper, an analytic
model of quiescent solar prominence is developed and used to demonstrate that
the prominence velocity increases exponentially, which means that some gas
falls downward towards the solar surface, and that Alfven waves are naturally
present in the solar prominences. These theoretical predictions are consistent
with the current observational data of solar quiescent prominences.Comment: Update Final Journal Print Version along with other Metadat

Rapid Steel Tooling Via Solid Freeform Fabrication
With increasing part complexity and requirements for long production runs, tooling has
become an expensive process that requires long lead times to manufacture. This lengthens the
amount oftime from "art to part". Rapid tooling via stereolithography (SLA), filled epoxies, etc.
have been stopgap measures to produce limited prototyping runs from (10 to 500 parts). This
gives poor dimensional analysis and does not allow for limited production runs of 1000+ parts.
The method ofproducing prototype tooling with a powdered metal process has been developed
that produces tooling with a hardness greater than 35 HRC and total shrinkage less than 0.5%.
This tooling process manufactures production ready tooling that will perform extended cycle
runs (100,000+). Manufacturing ofthis tooling takes 1 to 2 weeks and will compare favorably
with production grade steel tooling. Originals drawn in 3D CAD can be used to prototype the
master that will allow for the production ofthe rapid metal tool set.
process starts with a rapid prototyped model made by whatever process is desired or
a machined master. For this paper a Sander's Model Maker II® rapid prototyping machine was
used to fabricate the model. After the model ofthe tool set is made, a silicone rubber negative is
cast around that model. After the silicone rubber model is made, a heated slurry ofmetal
powders and polymers is poured into the mold to create the green tool set. The tool set is left to
cool, and then removed from the silicone rubber mold. The tool set is then debound and sintered
to produce a final tool set with properties approaching hardened tool steel.Mechanical Engineerin
Management of trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis
<p>Background: The current treatments for human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), Chagas disease and leishmaniasis (collectively referred to as the kinetoplastid diseases) are far from ideal but, for some, there has been significant recent progress. For HAT the only advances in treatment over the past two decades have been the introduction of an eflornithine/nifurtimox co-administration and a shorter regime of the old standard melarsoprol.</p>
<p>Sources of data: PubMed.</p>
<p>Areas of Agreement: There is a need for new safe, oral drugs for cost-effective treatment of patients and use in control programmes for all the trypanosomatid diseases.</p>
<p>Areas of controversy: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is not on the agenda and treatments are lagging behind.</p>
<p>Growing points: There are three compounds in development for the treatment of the CNS stage of HAT: fexinidazole, currently due to entry into phase II clinical studies, a benzoxaborole (SCYX-7158) in phase I trials and a diamidine derivative (CPD-0802), in advanced pre-clinical development. For Chagas disease, two anti-fungal triazoles are now in clinical trial. In addition, clinical studies with benznidazole, a drug previously recommended only for acute stage treatment, are close to completion to determine the effectiveness in the treatment of early chronic and indeterminate Chagas disease. For visceral leishmaniasis new formulations, therapeutic switching, in particular AmBisome, and the potential for combinations of established drugs have significantly improved the opportunities for the treatment in the Indian subcontinent, but not in East Africa.</p>
<p>Areas timely for developing research: Improved diagnostic tools are needed to support treatment, for test of cure in clinical trials and for monitoring/surveillance of populations in control programmes.</p>
The Condor Programmer's Manual - Version II
This is the CONDOR programmer's manual, that describes the hardware and software that form the basis of the real-time computational architecture built originally for the Utah-MIT hand. The architecture has been used successfully to control the hand and the MIT-Serial Link Direct Drive Arm in the past. A number of such systems are being built to address the computational needs of other robotics research efforts in and around the lab. This manual, which is intended primarily for programmers/users of the CONDOR system, represents our effort at documenting the system so that it can be a generally useful research tool.MIT Artificial Intelligence Laborator
